Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) involves injecting chemically treated water at high pressure to extract natural gas and oil. While fracking provides economic benefits, it requires large amounts of freshwater and risks environmental disruption if wastewater is improperly managed. The process is regulated by states and laws allow companies to keep fracking chemical contents private, raising concerns among environmentalists. Native American opinions on fracking are mixed, as some support economic gains while others believe it violates spiritual obligations. Parts of Europe have banned fracking out of water contamination worries, while others research its risks and benefits. Careful consideration is needed to maximize fracking's upsides and minimize downsides.

HYDRAULIC FRACTURING
Abstract
Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is the process of obtaining natural gas and oil through drilling
techniques that are coupled with the high pressure insertion of chemically treated water. Fracking was first
practiced in the 1940’s and its methods have increase in complexity since then. Benefits to fracking in the
US are positive impacts on the economy and a surplus of energy available to citizens. Significant risks of
fracking is the vast consumption of freshwater and improper wastewater management that can lead to
environmental disruption. Denton, TX attempted to ban fracking due to these risks, but faced several
lawsuits from the Texas Oil and Gas Association (TXOGA) in response. Fracking is a state regulated event
with trade secret laws able to be applied and acknowledged, which allow the non-disclosure of chemicals
inside of the water used in fracking operations. The acknowledgement of these laws causes controversy
among environmentalist groups, due to the usage of biocides which cause harm upon ingestion. In
comparison, fracking is both endorsed and opposed by the Native American people. Some of them wish to
enjoy the economic benefits of fracking. However, others feel that their spiritual obligations are not being
fulfilled by allowing fracking to commence. Parts of Europe have already enforced bans on fracking due to
their fear of water contamination, while others are allocating resources into researching the benefits and
risks of its usage. The application of fracking should be carefully considered in order to reap its benefits
and avoid negative consequences.
