Moment of the Year for Viola Beach
Tribute
Emal Nessary, California
2. Introduction
• Los Angeles, California-based Emal Nessary works as the
operations manager for the Writers Guild of America, West,
Inc. When Emal Nessary is not working, he enjoys soaking
up California’s sunshine while listening to his favorite band,
Coldplay.
In mid-February, Coldplay was honored with an NME music
award for Music Moment of the Year. The award was in
response to the band’s Glastonbury 2016 performance,
where Coldplay honored the late Viola Beach, a band
whose members and manager died in a car crash in early
2016. In a touching tribute to the band’s fallen members,
Coldplay covered the Viola Beach song “Boys That Sing.”

• Speaking of the performance beforehand, Coldplay’s Chris
Martin said the aim with the tribute was to give Viola
Beach the chance to headline Glastonbury, in a way. He said
that in 20 years, maybe it could have been Viola Beach up
on that stage performing their own song and that he hoped
Coldplay's cover did the song justice
During Coldplay’s Glastonbury 2016 performance, the band
also performed many of its own hits, including “Charlie
Brown,” “Fix You,” and “Hymn for the Weekend.” During the
band’s performance of “Up and Up,” it was joined onstage
by Martin’s children Moses and Apple.
