Minimising and Discounting Ourselves
10
Prepared for Nelson Mandela by Marianne Williamson
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our
darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to
be? You are a child of God. You choosing to play small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that
other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. We are born to manifest the glory of God that is
within us. It’s not just in some of us. It’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to
do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
A Rubicon Partnership Executive Coach chooses to be the very best they can be every day and liberates others to do the same

Your Gremlins
13
• Choose to listen, OR NOT, to your inner gremlin
• Choose which inner voice is louder ‘I CAN’ or’ I CAN’T’
• Choose a loud, roaring, booming ‘I CAN’ and a pathetic, weak ‘I CAN’T’
• Never COMPARE yourself with others and ONLY choose to COMPETE with YOURSELF
• Decide on an Invigorating Primary Question in life: How can this be brilliant? How can this be great? Choose to frame your
perspective positively
• Ignore external negative voices. Listen only to your inner ‘I CAN’
‘Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great ones make you
feel that you too can become great’ Mark Twain

To consider the characteristics of a Best Self Mindset
19
• If you think you are beaten, YOU ARE
• If you think you dare not, YOU DON”T
• If you would like to win but think you can’t, IT’S A SLAM DUNK THAT YOU WONT
• Success begins with WILL
• It’s all about your STATE OF MIND
• If you think you are outclassed, YOU ARE
• If you think you are little, YOU ARE
• Life’s battles don’t go to the stronger or faster individual, they go to the individual who BELIEVES that THEY CAN

Your Heroic Best Self: What is your ceiling? Raise the roof! What ceiling?
20
• There is no BEST SELF involved in being mediocre or bland
• Engaging your Best Self is all about CHOOSING to be outstanding
• It’s about pushing MEDIOCRE aside
• It’s about life’s inches: choosing to go an EXTRA INCH in everything that you choose to do
• It’s about choosing to be CALM and CONSIDERED. Your Best Self cannot perform in anxiety, stress or exhaustion
• It’s about escaping the everyday EVERY DAY
• Raising the roof is about a commitment to STRETCHING yourself for the rest of your life
• It’s about living your life as if YOU ARE DYING. Because you are. We all are.
”If you aren’t in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?” T. S. Eliot

To consider your Best Self Super-fuel
22
• Target 70% of your diet to be water based ‘live’ food, food eaten in the way that nature made it, to rid yourself of any processed food
and maintain your 70% water balance
• Say no to ‘white’- to sugar, and other highly processed food such as flour and dairy
• Stop eating when you are full
• Exercise for 30-40 minutes, three times a week, at your ideal heart rate - 220 minus your age
• Get good sleep
• Don’t be on time, be early
• Remember to look up, to look after your mind, to take time for you
• Forget your age
• Drink 2 litres of water a day
EXECUTIVE COACHING COPYRIGHT © THE RUBICON PARTNERSHIP
To consider your Best Self Habits
23
• Commit to finding and celebrating your Best Self
• Set your own exceptionally high standards and remove your ceilings
• Make time to think, to create, to explore your state and to reconnect with your Best Self
• Shake it up - break with mundane routine to stimulate your Best Self
• Get the fundamentals right - your diet, your sleep, your hydration, your exercise
• Recognize that texture comes with life, highs and lows, and live your life in the full and confident knowledge that you are always
able when the time is right to access your mojo
• Simply choose to be your best self, to love what you do and do what you love, to blow the roof off and constantly stretch
yourself. In doing so you will undoubtedly influence others to do the same

• You have to leave your needs at the door
• Your job is to meet others’ needs
• Your job is to believe in your ability to inspire a positive change in mindset in the person that you are serving
• Your job is to make sure you are fully resourced and always your very Best Self

Active Listening: 8 skills offering open questions or perspectives
38
1. Put what you have heard into your own words: “What I am hearing is…”
2. Offer a summary: “In summary…”
3. Clarify your understanding: “What I understand to be the main issue is…”
4. Explore the suspense of disbelief: “What if you could achieve the best outcome…”
5. Observe the disconnect between words and state: “What I am sensing is…”
6. Check the underlying emotions: “What feelings are you associating with the issue?”
7. Check out meaning: “What do you mean when you say that?”
8. Silence- let the person reflect in their time: Stay present, stay connected, stay quiet and listen

  • 10. EXECUTIVE COACHING COPYRIGHT © THE RUBICON PARTNERSHIP Minimising and Discounting Ourselves 10 Prepared for Nelson Mandela by Marianne Williamson “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. You choosing to play small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. We are born to manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us. It’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” A Rubicon Partnership Executive Coach chooses to be the very best they can be every day and liberates others to do the same

  • 13. EXECUTIVE COACHING COPYRIGHT © THE RUBICON PARTNERSHIP Your Gremlins 13 • Choose to listen, OR NOT, to your inner gremlin • Choose which inner voice is louder ‘I CAN’ or’ I CAN’T’ • Choose a loud, roaring, booming ‘I CAN’ and a pathetic, weak ‘I CAN’T’ • Never COMPARE yourself with others and ONLY choose to COMPETE with YOURSELF • Decide on an Invigorating Primary Question in life: How can this be brilliant? How can this be great? Choose to frame your perspective positively • Ignore external negative voices. Listen only to your inner ‘I CAN’ ‘Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great ones make you feel that you too can become great’ Mark Twain
