Soil Pollution?
WHAT IS SOIL?
❑ Soil is the thin layer of organic and
inorganic materials that covers the Earth’s
rocky surface
❑ Soil is composed of particles of broken rock
that have been altered by mechanical and
chemical weathering and erosion
Soil supports life
• Water: Utilized for growth of plants
• Carbon: Utilized in form of organic matter in soil
• Nutrients: Provided as mineral and recycled through decaying matters
in soil
WHAT IS SOIL POLLUTION
➢Soil pollution is caused by means
other than the direct addition of
xenobiotic (man-made) chemicals
such as agricultural runoff waters.
Industrial waste materials, acidic
precipitation, and radioactive fallout
It is defined as the build-up in soils or persistent toxic compounds,
radioactive materials, or disease causing agents, which have adverse
effects on plant growth and animal health
HOW IS IT CAUSED?
Def ores t at ion
Soil erosion is produced by
deforestation
U s e of Pes t ic id es
The soil loses its fertility for
overuse of pesticides
Landfill
Leach harmful chemicals such as
chlorides and heavy metals into soil
Discharge of Industrial Waste
It caused the soil to erode and becomes
useless
Soil Pollution
EFFECTS OF SOIL POLLUTION
Agric ult ural
• Reduced soil fertility
• Increased erodibility
• Loss of nutrient
Ind us t rial
• Increased salinity
• Release of pollutant gases
• Reduced vegetation
U rban
• Clogging of drains
• Public health problems
• Pollution of drinking water sources
Wild lif e
• Loss of habitat
• Extinction of Species
• Negative impact on food chain

How can
we prevent
Soil
Pollution?
01 02
03 04
Use Plants
Some plants can
extract heavy
metals from soil
Bioremediation
Restores
contaminated sites to
a relatively clean
environment
Avoid Littering
Non biodegradable
wastes should not
be discharged in
soil
Land Farming
Land farming
should be
promoted for
waste treatment
