Bono grew up in the Glasnevin neighborhood of Dublin, Ireland with his parents and brother. He attended the Glasnevin National School and then the Institute of Secundary Education St. where he learned to play chess. In the 1970s, he formed the rock band U2 with school friends. U2 achieved worldwide success with their 1987 album The Joshua Tree, selling over 28 million copies and touring globally. In 2010, Bono suffered a spinal injury while preparing for a U2 tour and underwent emergency neurosurgery. Now at age 58, he continues touring the world with U2 and has maintained his singing voice thanks to medical care.
