At Himali Boarding School, Kurseong, we believe that there is no substitute for
‘education through action’ and that exploring places, people, cultures, economic
opportunities, and technological advancements through travel, complements and
completes the educational experience. This philosophy matches our endeavour to
create responsible global citizens and dynamic leaders by bringing the knowledge of
the world to the classroom as well as encouraging students to go out into the world.
These two methods are critical to create the three pillars of global citizenship based on
empathy, understanding, and international collaboration.
In line with this mission, our students recently journeyed to Europe as a part of an
educational program. Our students visited several beautiful locations in Germany, Italy,
and Switzerland. To augment the broader program, we selected the Young Authors
Program, which ensured students’ engagement and immersion. This Student Travel
Review is an outcome of this collaborative and exploratory module that our students
of Himali Boarding School, Kurseong, along with the students of Adamas International
School, Kolkata. It captures the entire journey in students’ own words and photographs.
It even showcases their learning from their active interaction with some of the world’s
most enigmatic nations.
I would also like to recognise the efforts of EdTerra Edventures, a company that is well
aware of co-curricular and extra-curricular goals and developmental needs of students.
We acknowledge the contribution of their staff, especially their on-journey educators.
Their professionalism made for an effortless, safe, and enriching travel experience for
our students and teachers.
Lastly, we extend a heartfelt thanks to the students, who participated in the program so
enthusiastically. Our willing learners had an enriching experience, the enduring benefits
of which they will reap all throughout their academic lives and careers. Each parent may
feel proud of this highly demonstrable publication that will keep reminding their wards
of their achievements and capabilities, all lifelong.

An educational journey to foreign lands always induces learning and excitement
among young and inquisitive students. When the destinations are as diverse as
Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, one can only imagine the myriad ways in which
Indian students would absorb and construct learning out of the many differences
and similarities that mark the cultures and people of India and Europe.
For EdTerra, an educational journey is about enabling students to construct
knowledge through a meaningful encounter with new cultures, without diluting
their fun and excitement or restricting their wandering, curious minds. EdTerra
achieves this through its Program Development Team (PDT), which comprises
both Indian and international experts. The PDT carefully designs culturally neutral
projects that enable students to meaningfully observe, record, and articulate their
impressions. These tools are deployed through a process that encourages teamwork
and meaningful discussions besides recording observations through digital means,
all of which is finally synthesised into a media product that showcases the ideas
and learning of the students.
This Student Travel Review, ‘Enchanting Europe: Germany, Italy, and Switzerland’
is one such media product that captures the journey of learning of the students of
Himali Boarding School, Kurseong. This book serves as a window into the marvels of
Europe, especially valuable for those students, peers, and parents who could not be
a part of the program. It showcases the intellectual and creative capacities of the
students, the credit for which is rightfully due to their parents and school.
EdTerra Edventures would like to thank Himali Boarding School, Kurseong, for their
efforts and support. We especially want to thank the Director, Mr. Robindra Kr.
Subba, for guiding us. EdTerra would also like to thank the accompanying teachers
for being so dynamic and enthusiastic. Their energy made our work easy, and more
importantly, made for a more memorable journey for the students. We encourage
you to read and relive the learning and adventures of these students through the

OUR JOURNEY

As soon as we got to know about this school
trip to Europe, we grabbed the opportunity
immediately. We were really excited to explore
different parts of Europe along with our friends.
Our journey began from the beautiful city of
Zurich. Upon reaching Zurich, we went straight
to Maestrani’s Chocolarium to witness the
manufacturing process of chocolates. After
returning to the hotel, we retired for the night
after having dinner.
Next day, we went to visit MountTitlis and rode on
the Rotair. We were amazed to see a 360-degree
view of the Alpine valleys. We enjoyed sliding
down the snow-clad mountainous slopes. Later,
we headed towards the Lion Monument or the
Lion of Lucerne. We learnt that the massive
sculpture was made by Bertel Thorvaldsen.
Next morning, we headed towards Geneva and
went to the United Nations Office. Our tour guide
took us around different buildings and explained
the significance of each of the rooms. We felt
privileged to be able to sit in rooms where global
dignitaries meet and discuss global issues. When
we spotted a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the
UN Office, we felt a sense of national pride.
Then, we left for Venice and stopped for lunch
in Milan on our way. After reaching there, we
visited the Milan Cathedral. We headed towards
Venice and took a ferry from Tronchetto Island to
visit Piazza San Marco. The view from the ferry
was splendid and we clicked many photographs.
Another highlight of our visit to Venice was
riding a gondola. We saw a number of buildings
in Venice, including the Doge’s Palace and St.
Mark’s Basilica. Our tour guide shared immense
information about the history of Venice. Later,
she took us to a glass factory in Murano and
we observed the art of glassblowing. Soon, it
was time for dinner and we ate delicious Italian
pizzas, pastas, and desserts. We also savoured
authentic Italian gelato.
Our last destination was Germany. Since all
of us are fond of hi-powered automobiles, we
got really excited to visit the BMW Museum.
The range of cars and bikes on display was
simply unbelievable. After having a traditional
German lunch, we headed towards the Dachau
Concentration Camp Memorial Site. At the site,
we saw the place, which served as a bathing
place for prisoners. We also saw the waiting
room where prisoners awaited their impending
deaths. When the tour guide shared information
about the site, we felt sorrowful thinking about
the miseries people had suffered. We also visited
Marienplatz or the central square in Munich.
Finally, our trip came to an end. Our journey to
Europe was a fantastic experience that none of
us will ever forget.

GERMANY

On our educational trip to Europe, we visited
Germany. We were really excited to visit one of
the most advanced nations of the world. The
countryside of Germany looked beautiful, just
like all the other European countries. We reached
our hotel in Munich late in the evening and retired
for the night.
Next day, we went to visit the BMW Museum
in Munich. Germany is the place of origin for
some of the top-rated automobile companies
and BMW is one of them. At the BMW Museum,
we clicked several group photographs in front
of the huge BMW logo. Upon entering the
building, we downloaded the BMW Museum App,
which guided us throughout the tour. We were
impressed to see a vast variety of automobiles
on display. While walking around, we realised that
BMW also manufactures motorbikes. We were
awestruck by the state-of-the-art technology
and design that characterises BMW vehicles.
At the merchandise shop, we bought gifts and
souvenirs for our family members and friends.
Our next stop was Marienplatz, or the chief
square of Munich, where we were treated to
a few mouth-watering German dishes. After
having lunch, we headed towards the Dachau
Concentration Camp Memorial Site. All of us had
read about the atrocities that took place in such
camps. We met a tour guide who took us on a
tour of the large campsite. We were horrified
to hear the details shared by her. Also, we saw
replicas of barracks, gas chambers, and bathing
areas of the prisoners brought there. We learnt
that about 30,000 prisoners were housed in
the camp, which was originally meant for 6,000
people.
It was heartbreaking to hear how prisoners
were tortured in the camp for petty issues such
as a broken button or dirt in the overcrowded
barracks. Often, the prisoners committed
suicide by crossing the boundary and entering a
forbidden area to get rid of their sufferings. We
felt miserable when these stories were narrated
to us.
Later, we went on a city tour in Munich to see
its prominent landmarks and tourist sites. As the
day came to an end, it was time for us to pack
our bags and leave for Europe. Next morning,
we left for the airport for boarding our return
flight to India. We would always remember this
wonderful journey for our whole lives. We look
forward to many such trips in the future.

ITALY

Our knowledge of history tells us that Italy is a
country where some of the most artistic people of
the world were born. This country witnessed the
occurrence of Renaissance that revolutionised
art, science, mathematics, and astronomy. This
movement saw the rise of famous artists such
as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael.
On our trip to Italy, we visited the cities of Milan
and Venice. The moment we entered Milan, we
were impressed by its stunning architecture
and the efforts undertaken to maintain these
heritage sites. Some of those buildings that
were built about centuries ago were preserved
very well.
Milan is renowned for being a fashion capital
where all premier branded outlets can be found.
After a long walk across the famous streets of
Milan, we reached the Piazza del Duomo. We saw
the Milan Cathedral, which stands as a symbol of
Italy’s rich heritage. Built in Italian Gothic style,
it took nearly six centuries for the church to be
constructed. We clicked many photographs along
with our friends.
Next day, we explored Venice, which is also
known as ‘The Queen of the Adriatic’. The city
is built on more than 100 small islands. It was
amazing to see that various parts of the city are
connected via a well-knit network of canals and
bridges instead of roads and streets. A majority
of the locals depend on tourism as the chief
source of income.
InVenice,wehadadeliciousItalianmealconsisting
of pizzas and pastas. After eating our meal, we
went to a glass factory in Murano to witness a
glass-blowing demonstration. The glass-blowing
technique requires immense artistic skill on the
part of glass-workers. We were highly impressed
to see the meticulous process by which glass was
carved out. We learnt that this traditional artistic
skill is passed from one generation to another.
Later, we went for a gondola ride. Gondolas are
long rowing boats made of wood for plying on
shallow waters up to two or three metres deep.
The primary modes of transportation in Venice
include boats and ferries.
Our visit to Italy as part of our educational trip
to Europe was an experience of a lifetime. All
of us would love to travel again with EdTerra
Edventures.

Our trip to Switzerland began in Zurich. At
first, we went to Maestrani’s Chocolarium.
The chocolatiers of Zurich take high-quality
ingredients and melt them to create some of the
finest chocolates in the world. Inside the factory,
we got a chance to taste several chocolates. It
was an amazing experience. We also bought a
variety of chocolates for our friends and family
members.
Our next stop was Mount Titlis, one of the most
scenic mountain peaks in the world. The weather
was quite cold.The main attraction at MountTitlis
was the Rotair providing a panoramic view of the
mountains. It was one of the most spectacular
experiences of our lives. When we alighted from
the Rotair, we played in the snow. For many of us,
it was the first time that we were seeing snow.
Next, we went to eat lunch in an Indian restaurant.
It was surprising to find a restaurant serving
Indian cuisine in such an important tourist spot
in a foreign country. It was the perfect spot for
taking photographs. After lunch, we enjoyed
shopping for souvenirs.
On our way back, we visited Lucerne. We visited
Lake Lucerne and enjoyed the cool winds. We
relished some really delicious ice-cream while
exploring the beautiful place. Then, we went
shopping and had a great time going from
one store to another. We also visited the Lion
Monument. It was built to commemorate the
martyred Swiss Guards who lost their lives
during the French Revolution. We learnt certain
facts that our history textbooks had not taught
us.
Our next destination was Geneva. We enjoyed
another delicious meal at Brasserie Restaurant
La Riviera. The highlight of our visit to Geneva
was an opportunity to visit the United Nations
Office. On a guided tour of the UN Office, we
were amazed to see the Broken Chair. It is an
eight-metre tall, wooden chair with three legs
commemorating the signing of the agreement
among nations banning the use of landmines.
We also saw Lake Geneva and the corresponding
harbour on our city tour.
On our city tour of Geneva, we went to a
freshwater lake called La Rade. It was a great
tourist spot. Soon, we spotted The Flower Clock
and a Ferris wheel where everyone gathered to
click photographs. The main attraction was the
Jet d’Eau Fountain — its height is about 140
metres.
Overall, our educational trip to Europe was a
fascinating experience. We would like to thank
EdTerra Edventures, our parents, and our school
for giving us such a fabulous opportunity.

TOURIST FRIENDLY EU CITIES

Zurich was the first place that we visited on
our trip to Europe. The Swiss chocolates are
considered the finest in the world and a visit
to Maestrani’s Chocolarium reaffirmed this
fact. Mount Titlis is another place that attracts
tourists from far and wide. Many of us saw snow
for the first time in our lives. Riding on the Titlis
Rotair, the world’s first revolving aerial cableway,
was simply unbelievable. Lucerne Lake, the Lion
Monument, Fraumünster Church, the Lucerne
City Center and its market area were some other
places where thousands of tourists visit every
year.
When we reached the United Nations Office in
Geneva, we took a guided tour of the building.
We were astonished to know that the 45-minute
tour is conducted in over 15 languages. Our visit
to Geneva City Centre was another enjoyable
experience. There were various restaurants, wide
broadways, fabulous hotels, and excellent tourist
amenities.
Another famous city of Europe — Milan — is
known as an international fashion hub. The city is
a paradise for shopping and fashion enthusiasts
alike. The fashion enthusiasts can never get tired
of browsing through high-fashion stores in Milan.
In addition to this, Milan is known for its splendid
architecture like churches and art galleries. The
grand Duomo di Milano is one such example. Also
called the Milan Cathedral, it is one of the world’s
largest churches, drawing millions of visitors to
the city.
One cannot help but appreciate the beauty of
Venice. This city is known for its 150 canals and
about 400 bridges. From picturesque gondola
rides to numerous shops selling varieties of
goods, Venice offers some great experiences to
its tourists. Every year, about 20 million tourists
come to this city. The chief highlight of this city is
the gondola ride through the narrow waterways.
Moreover, the glass artefacts available there
showcase the unique skills of the traditional
craftspersons based in the small island of Murano.
Germany is another European country that
provides a wholesome experience to its tourists.
Munich is a city that is not only rooted in history
but also symbolises the development of the
modern times. In Munich, our visit to the Dachau
Concentration Camp Memorial Site gave us an
insight into the working of the Nazi power regime.
While visiting the BMW Museum, we saw some
remarkable automobiles.
Our experience of travelling to different countries
in Europe was amazing. We would like to thank
EdTerra Edventures for organising this trip.

I am Ankita Biswas and I am a student of Himali Boarding School, Kurseong. I am 13
years old and I live in Kolkata. I like to read books. I also attended drawing classes
for three years. We went on an educational trip to Europe, which was organised by
EdTerra Edventures. I had great fun exploring new places and learning about their
culture and history. Of all the places, I thought Switzerland was the most beautiful.
It was fun to taste different kinds of chocolates. Playing with snow was another
exciting experience. During this journey, I learnt to use a knife and fork while eating. I
also improved my knowledge of European history.

I am Aswaadur Rehman and I am a student of Himali Boarding School. I am 16 years
old. I like to play volleyball. It was the first time that I went on an international trip
and it was extraordinary. Each of these countries are famous for their culture and
cuisine. During our journey to Europe, we visited the cities of Geneva, Zurich, Venice,
and Munich in Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. We also made short stops at Milan
and Innsbruck for lunch on our way to Venice and Munich respectively. I would like to
thank EdTerra Edventures for organising such an amazing trip.
I am Karma Chungmey Dawa and I study in Class 8, Himali Boarding School. I am 14
years old. We explored three places in Europe, namely Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.
It was the first time that I travelled outside India and it was a memorable experience.
It was fun visiting these places and learning about the locals and their languages and
cuisines. Our Journey Mentor, Raj Sir, was very polite, helpful, and nice to everyone.
I am very thankful to EdTerra Edventures for organising this trip and I would love to
travel again on a trip organised by them.
Sohom Kanrar
My name is Sohom Kanrar and I study in Class 10, Himali Boarding School. I am 16
years old. I am always open to new experiences. I play football quite well. I went on
a tour of Europe and visited the cities of Zurich, Geneva, Venice, Milan, and Munich in
Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. It was the first time in my life that I travelled outside
India on an educational tour. Every place that we visited was unique in its own way.
Besides learning the historical background of each destination, we explored new
cultures and cuisines. Of all the experiences, I thoroughly enjoyed riding a gondola.
Overall, our trip was amazing.

Aniket Jana
My name is Aniket and I am 13 years old. I am a student of Himali Boarding School.
I would love to explore the world. In Europe, we visited three countries, namely
Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. All the places seemed really different from India. The
roads were very clean. The Europeans are very friendly and cheerful. Riding a gondola
had been my dream since some time and it finally came true on this trip. I would like
to thank EdTerra Edventures for such a fantastic educational tour.
Anupama Haque
My name is Anupama Haque and I am 14 years old. I am a student of Himali Boarding
School. Our trip to Europe was memorable and I learnt a lot about Renaissance and
the art of glass-blowing. I also went for a gondola ride. In Venice, I noticed that people
travelled by boats to go from one place to another. I got a chance to try different
kinds of cuisines such as Italian, Swiss, German, and Austrian. I would like to thank
EdTerra Edventures for organising this trip to Europe and Raj Sir, our Journey Mentor,
for his excellent guidance.
Menaj Ali
My name is Menaj and I study in Class 9, Himali Boarding School. I am 14 years old. I
am hard-working by nature. In my free-time, I like to go for biking and photography.
I am also our school photographer. Recently, I went on an educational tour to
Europe, which was organised by EdTerra Edventures. During our journey, we visited
Switzerland, Italy, and Germany. My dream of playing with snow came true at Mount
Titlis. Sliding down the snow-capped mountains and riding a gondola in Venice along
with friends were the two best experiences of the trip. This trip has taught me the
importance of discipline, time management, and teamwork.
Zahin Sazzad
My name is Zahin Sazzad and I study in Class 9, Himali Boarding School. Our
educational tour to Europe, especially Venice, inspired me to learn more about art, as
Venice is the birthplace of many celebrated artists. I also love clicking photographs,
so I captured a lot of lovely pictures and improved my photography skills. Travelling
with EdTerra Edventures on a school trip was an awesome experience. I gained a
lot of knowledge on this trip. I am really grateful to our Journey Mentor, Raj Sir, for
teaching me the value of time. I am very thankful to EdTerra Edventures for arranging
this trip for us.

Prashanti Chettri
I am Prashanti Chettri, an English teacher at Himali Boarding School, Kurseong,
Darjeeling since last 10 years. I love travelling, even though I have not been to many
places. Outside India, I have visited Australia and Europe. Our trip to Europe starting
from Switzerland, moving to Italy, and then Germany was amazing. I was awestruck
by the beauty of Europe. Our Journey Mentor, Mr Raj, organised our trip really well. He
is very committed and knowledgeable. I would like to thank Mr Subhojit from EdTerra
Edventures and my School Director, Mr R Bubba, for providing this opportunity. I will
remember this trip throughout my life.

Manveer Singh
I am Manveer Singh and I study in Class 7, Adamas International School. We visited
Switzerland, Italy, and Germany during our educational trip to Europe. I enjoyed
visiting Switzerland the most. Visiting Mount Titlis and the Lion Monument in Lucerne
was enjoyable. In Geneva, we went to the United Nations Office, which I had wanted
to visit since long. In Italy, we went to Venice and Milan. In Germany, we went to the

Shreya Mondal
I am Shreya Mondal and I study in Class 11, Adamas International School. When I grow
up, I aspire to become a journalist. I was fortunate to visit some of the world’s most
developed countries with rich and varied heritage. Switzerland offered breathtaking
scenery such as mountains with snow-covered tops and wild sunflowers blooming
all around. Our trip to Venice was a delightful experience. Besides St. Mark’s Square,
we went to a glass factory in Murano. Munich is equipped with brilliant infrastructure,
which was highly impressive. I would like to thank EdTerra Edventures for such a
wonderful experience.
Soumya Basu Roy
I am Soumya Basu Roy and I study in Class 12, Adamas International School. Our
journey to Switzerland, Italy, and Germany was fabulous. Travelling to a foreign
country without my parents was challenging, yet exciting and fun-filled. The whole
group became one family. The natural beauty of Zurich was breathtaking. It was
characterised by lush green fields and blue skies. Venice was also very beautiful. Its
history and culture was stupendous. In Munich, we learnt a lot about German history.
It was amazing to see how people preserve their old buildings. The whole trip was a
great experience.

Kaustubh Ved
Jaiswal
My name is Kaustubh Ved Jaiswal and I study in Class 12, Adamas International
School. Travelling is one of my hobbies and our educational trip to Switzerland, Italy,
and Germany was absolutely amazing. Germany has become one of my favourite
destinations and I had the pleasure of visiting many places there. I spent some of the
best moments of the journey at the United Nations Office. Meeting new people and
learning to interact with them in their language was an awesome experience. I would
love to go on similar trips in the future.
Hritwik Manna
My name is Hritwik Manna and I study in Class 8, Adamas International School. During
the journey, our visit to Zurich was amazing, especially because of the chocolate
tasting experience at Maestrani’s Chocolarium. I also enjoyed visiting the City Centre
in Lucerne. Riding the Ice Flyer at Mount Titlis was thrilling. In Geneva, I enjoyed eating
local dishes and the guided tour of the UN Office. At night before sleeping, we would
gather to shortlist points for the photo-book. It was an engaging experience. Overall,
our journey was an awesome learning experience.
Rohan Mishra
I am Rohan Mishra and I study in Class 10, Adamas International School. Our journey
to Europe was a fantastic experience. I really enjoyed interacting with all the new
people that I met. On one of our bus journeys, we performed a ‘silent disco’ when we
played the same song on our respective headsets and danced with joy. For anyone
watching us without the headsets, it seemed as if we were dancing to silence. The
skies across Europe were stunning — blue and smog-free. My favourite destination
was Mount Titlis where I saw snow for the first time. Our Journey Mentor, Raj Sir, had
a pleasing personality and we really enjoyed his company.

Divyaanshu Singh
I am Divyaanshu Singh and I study in Class 7. Our journey to Europe was an exciting
experience. On this trip, I enjoyed clicking photographs and making memes out of
them. We explored many places and enjoyed visiting each and every site. I loved visiting
Mount Titlis and Piazza San Marco. However, our visit to the Dachau Concentration
Camp Memorial Site saddened me. On this trip, we learnt how to cooperate with
friends, to abide by the rules, and be punctual. Miro, our bus driver and Raj Sir, our
Journey Mentor, are two people without whom this trip would not have been so
enjoyable.

I am Ansuman Jaiswal and I study in Class 7, Adamas International School. I am 12
years old. Our journey to Europe was a fantastic experience. We went to Switzerland,
Italy, and Germany. All these places were exceptional. The roads were very clean and
the infrastructure was excellent. During the journey, I met many new people. I danced
and sang songs with my friends. On this trip, I became more independent and learnt
to manage on my own. I would like to thank EdTerra Edventures for such a fantastic
educational tour.
Yuvraj Goyal
My name is Yuvraj Goyal and I am a student of Adamas International School. Our
trip to Europe was unbelievable because I travelled outside India for the first time.
From Maestrani’s Chocolarium in Switzerland to the BMW Museum in Germany —
the whole tour was knowledgeable as well as enjoyable. I was often confused while
clicking photographs because there was so much to capture, but very little time. I did
not know anyone in my group but very soon, we ended up dancing together. This trip
was a wonderful experience and I loved it.

Anindita Ghosh
I work as the International Coordinator at Adamas International School. On
our educational tour to Europe, we were accompanied by Mr. Raj, a patient and
knowledgeable man, as our Journey Mentor. All of us were really excited to visit
Switzerland, Italy, and Germany. At Mount Titlis, riding on the Rotair and Ice Flyer
was adventurous. We shopped for Swiss chocolates at Maestrani’s Chocolarium and
visited Old Town in Geneva. Our visit to the BMW Museum and Dachau Concentration
Camp Memorial Site in Munich was insightful. The food was delicious and the
arrangements were great. EdTerra Edventures ensured that our children enjoyed the
tour besides gaining knowledge.
