Should More Films About
Environmental Issues Be Produced?
On a French ship's deck, seamen watch a swallow on the boards, In Le
tombeau des épuisés, the film that won the Good-Natured Film Festival's
audience award, this is the film's last shot. That it was shot in slow motion
with a French narration and had sparse musical accompaniment set it apart
from other environmental documentaries. Its power was in reminding the
audience of their interactions with nature, wherever they were.
When did a film or documentary move you? Can you think of any that affected
your ideas or behaviour? What's an impactful environmental film? What was
the significance of this?
Impact of the films:
A well-made, heartfelt video that a wide range of people sees will spur them on
to action. Planning, anticipating, and assessing the effect is challenging. A
film's purpose may be to bring a new issue to the international notice, in which
case reach and widespread sympathy would qualify as practical impact (e.g.,
Virunga shedding light on the perils of violence, poaching, and oil extraction
on Virunga National Park) (e.g., Virunga putting light on the hazards of conflict,
poaching, and oil exploitation on Virunga National Park). If a film re-addresses
a well-known problem, it could generate systemic change (e.g., Blue Planet II
pushing audiences to shift away from single-use plastics) (e.g., Blue Planet II
inspiring viewers to move away from single-use plastics).
To construct a picture that makes a difference, filmmakers must comprehend
what change looks like, who would execute it, and how.
Audience
It's essential to consider the demographic of your target market. Is the film
aiming for a large, varied audience or specified acts like policy or industry
change? Will the film be seen by the right people, or will it rely on the audience
to exert pressure on those in power?
After The Cove, a 2009 documentary documenting Taiji dolphin drive hunting,
Japanese aquariums experienced international pressure to halt purchasing
dolphins from Taiji's annual hunts. Disapproval of the documentary's release
was met with demonstrations in Japan due to the film's Hollywood caper/spy
thriller approach.
The 2012 campaign for Chasing Ice was bottom-up and targeted. As part of
their plan, they took the movie to Ohio's 12th congressional district, where
they planned to show it to Congressman Pat Tiberi, an outspoken critic of
climate change action. Tiberi eventually changed his tune and published a
statement supporting global climate action.
If a video on a foreign topic gets one million views in the United States, it may
not be the best way to influence change in the country and alienate the film's
subjects.
Feelings
Even if many of the film's effects occur after its production (distribution, media
attention, lobbying), the film itself must stimulate its viewers. By focusing on
just a few people, the film can create an emotional connection between the
viewer and the subject(s).
The story of Kenyan farmer and climate activist Kisilu Musya, told in the film
Thank You for the Rain, humanizes the global warming crisis. The film's plan
of attack was bold. It delivered local and global advantages, closing the gap
between Musya and worldwide influencers, legislators, financiers, and
institutional leaders to accelerate global systems change and promote local
climate action in Kenya.
How did it engage so many emotions? Julia Dahr, the project's founder,
appointed Musya a co-director with creative control. He could show the
horrible drought and ensuing catastrophic storm to every person in their
broad target audience.
It's an incredible experience to make contact with someone you'd never met
before. Many high-budget environmental documentaries incorporate notable
individuals to connect with audiences, such as An Inconvenient Truth (Al
Gore), Before the Flood (Leonardo di Caprio), and Our Planet (Sir David
Attenborough) (Sir David Attenborough). The film's credibility and distribution
advantage derive from the well-known name.
Nobody's alone
Numerous heartfelt films dealing with social and environmental concerns have
gone unnoticed, and even a well-known film cannot stand on its own. Almost
all of the most successful films had extensive marketing efforts years before
their initial release.
Blue Planet II is praised for shifting attitudes and policies on single-use
plastics. The last episode, presented in December 2017, examined the impact
of micro plastics and pollution on ocean wildlife, including an albatross chick
killed by a plastic toothpick. Following this, public discussion against plastic
shifted, resulting in more beach clean-ups, a boom in reusable products like
water bottles and coffee cups, and legislative reform (including the UK ban on
plastic straws, cotton buds, and stirrers and an EU ban on selected single-use
plastic items for which non-plastic alternatives exist) (including the UK ban on
plastic straws, cotton buds and stirrers and an EU ban on selected single-use
plastic items for which non-plastic alternatives exist).
The media frenzy that followed the release of Blue Planet II's last episode may
have sparked the current shift, but years of research and activism had already
been underway. Blackfish, a movie depicting how Sea World's captive killer
whales murdered a senior trainer, led to a push to halt breeding and exhibiting
captive killer whales.
Protesters and the media are putting pressure on government officials to
reduce emissions and get out of the fossil fuel business.
The Waterbear, Uproar, and Key Conservation campaigns have been a great
success in inspiring and motivating people to participate in conservation.
We're also interested in how Netflix, Disney, and Apple spend on wildlife
projects. A Life On Our Planet, the latest impact documentary from David
Attenborough, will appear on Netflix in April. Wildlife Warriors will be followed
by documentaries from the Discovery Channel and the BBC Natural History
Unit (previously announced as The Red List).
The film may influence narratives about biodiversity loss and nature.
Understanding audience and impact can help boost global conservation
efforts.
