2. Introduction
A graduate of Santa Clara University School of Law, Ed Vergara is vice
president of investments at Palo Alto, California-based Marcus & Millichap.
Ed Vergara remains active in the local legal community and belongs to the
State Bar of California, which has issued a warning about a new phishing
scam.
The phishing scam reported by the State Bar of California targets attorneys
by way of a fraudulent e-mail message claiming to come from the state bar.
Attorneys should watch for a message with the subject line “Past due invoice
for State Bar Association of California” prompting them to click on a link to
download the invoice.
While the state bar does send reminders regarding fees, these reminders
come from an e-mail address ending in “calbar.ca.gov.” The state bar
advises attorneys who receive a message with the above subject line to
delete it immediately. They should also avoid opening any attachments or
clicking on any links in the e-mail.
Attorneys who have questions about their annual payment status can call
Member Records at 888-800-3400 or visit their My State Bar Profile at
www.calbar.ca.gov/Attorneys/MyStateBarProfile.aspx.
