8. Sustainability in Libraries
ALA identified sustainability as a major national trend in 2018
and defined three roles for ALA and its member libraries to serve.
IFLA ENSULIB Section has adopted the TBL framework as the main concept to
develop its definition of a green library and update it’s evaluation criteria for
the IFLA Green Library Award in 2022.

Catalyst
2nd Role: Conveners and
Connectors
3rd Role: Contributors to

Open Science for Sustainability
and Roles of Libraries
16. Open Science
Open science is knowledge, which includes code, data, scientific
outputs, results and publications, information and ideas (Vicente-Saez,
R., & Martinez-Fuentes, 2018).
The UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science was adopted
in November 2021.
It “takes into account academic freedom, gender-transformative
approaches and the specific challenges of scientists and other open
science actors in different countries and in particular in developing
countries, and contributes to reducing the digital, technological and
knowledge divides existing between and within countries.”
17. Roles of Libraries in Open Science
Ayris and Ignat (2018) defines the role of libraries in
the open science landscape by using the European
practice. Four roles/aspects for libraries are
identified, namely, open access and open access
publishing, research data management, E-
infrastructures, and citizen science.
Open science accelerates the achievement of SDGs
Libraries support and enhance open science for
sustainability in four aspects and more
Library associations/alliances and their members
develop the three roles identified by ALA for
achieving the 17 SDGs at different levels

Opportunities and Challenges
22. Opportunities
It is increasingly crucial to develop and enhance sustainability and open
science in libraries and the communities.
Library alliances/associations accelerate this process and benefit the
member libraries through effective collaboration and communication.
Challenges for Libraries
Common understanding of open science and its value;
Stable investments in open science infrastructure and services;
New skills and knowledge needed for the library staff;
Support from the library leadership and the authorities;
Legal issues and policies and so forth
