The pooka is a fairy who can took different form.
But mainly he takes the form of a black horse with yellow eyes and he can speak human language. You can see a pooka only at night and in irish countryside.
The pooka proposes a lift to men who leave pub and was drunk.
Generally these men accepted because it's difficult for them to find their way.
Then the pooka terrify the rider in his back with his speed and left him somewhere far away from their home
Other stories say that he comes before your house and call you by your name. And if you don't come and he is in a bad moon we will destroy your house.
Or when they see him, hens can't lay eggs and cow can't produce milk
→ All these stories explain why he is perceived like a feared fairy
- The banshee is a female spirit who annouces the death of a relative
with her cry.
- When you hear a banshee it means that someone you loved will die
- Her cry is describe like a wolf's scream or a cry of a woman who gives
birth. There is too much painful in her cry that when you hear it your hair
become grey.
- It was one of the oldest myth of Ireland
- Her description is not always the same, sometimes she is an old ugly
woman, or a beautiful young woman.
- But she always wears a long white dress, she has very long hair and
her skin is very pale
- Some Irish families have their own banshee like the O'Neills, O'Briens,
O'Gradys, O'Connors and Kavanaghs.
- Their banshee follow them all over the word, and can announce the
death of a relative even if the person lives very far
- But she just announces death, she doesn't cause death
Irish mythological figure (or called Gan Ceann meaning « without a head » in Irish Gaelic). They are headless riders known for having their head under one arm and riding a black horse. Actually, the Dullahan can put and take out his head as he wants.
But they also travel in wagons made of human bones, femurs and skulls (skull for the candles to light the way). They also had a whip that is actually a human spine.
The myth of the Dullahan says that when they stop riding, it is where a person is due to die. They call out, or simply murmurs the name of the person and the latest instantly die. There's no way to avoid that death.
They do not like to watched while on their errands, throwing a basin of blood on those who dare to do so (that announces death), or even whipping their eyes with their human spine.
However, the Dullahan is afraid of gold, even a gold spine could drive a Dullahan away.
Also called Stingy Jack or Jack the Smith, Jack ‘o’ lantern was a cruel and alcoholic man. His cruelty was such that even the Devil heard of him. Then, the Devil tried to condemn him to an eternity in hell, but Jack asked for a last drink in a pub, but he had no money to pay for it. Therefore, the Devil turned into a coin so Jack could pay for it, and then Jack put the coin in his pocket, just next to a little silver cross, which prevented the Devil from escaping. Jack let him go if he promised to leave him alone during the next ten years. Ten years later, the Devil comes back to take him to hell. Jack asked for an apple in an apple tree, and the Devil went to pluck it. Then, Jack put silver crosses all around the tree, which prevented the Devil from escaping once again. Jack let him go under the condition that the Devil would leave him alone forever. And then, years later, when Jack died, his cruelty prevented him from going to paradise, but the promise the Devil had made to him prevented him to go to hell. Consequently, Jack is condemned to wander between the living and the dead forever.
Legend says that Leprechauns were made from the union of a human and a spirit. Leprechauns came from a mythical land under the sea and when they arrived in Ireland decided to make their home here. Takes the appearance of a little (about 3feet) and old man, quite stocky and wearing clothes that were originally red (and not green).
The image of the leprechaun we have today, the modern and popular image, with a red beard, green clothes are made up or borrowed from European folklore.
The Leprechaun is known for being grumpy and for drinking liquor and whisky they made. They were seen as alone and does not like any contact with anybody (try to avoid meeting any human).
They spend all their time making shoes, and keeping hidden his pot of gold from cupid and stupid humans at the end of the rainbow.
If ever captured by a human, the Leprechaun has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for his release. But it is also said that the Leprechaun disappears if you wink one single time.
