Bandhej is a type of tie-dye textile art from India where fabric is tied with thread in various points to create patterns before dyeing. It is mainly produced in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu. Different types of natural dyes like vat dye and procion dye are used in the process. To make bandhej, the fabric is tied according to the design's motif and then dyed in a light color dye solution. 3. Types of dyes
● Vat dye: Natural dye. Cotton and wools are dyed.
● Direct dye: Also known as hot water dyes. Requires no
binding or any exhausting agents and are directly dipped in
hot water. Fabrics like cotton, silk, nylon and wool areb
dyed.
● Napthol Dye: Two chemicals are combined to produce third
color by reacting. Fabrics are first dyed with one and printed
with the other.
● Procion dye: Used on cellulose fabrics like cotton, linen and
rayon. Cold water process used in solar dyeing, tie and dye
and batik. Salt and soda helps in removing excess dye from
the fabric.
4. How bandhej is formed?
● Destarch the cotton fabric by soaking it in water overnight
● Prepare the design and pattern of the motif like the leaves,
flowers etc; before tying it
● Now tie the motif according to your pattern with the help of
threads
● Dip the fabric in water for 5 minutes to soak it completely.
Take the fabric out and squeeze out the excess water
● Prepare the dye mixture in a bucket and immerse the fabric
into the dye which is light in color
● Soak the fabric for about 5 minutes. Add salt which aids the
dyeing process.
● Take the fabric out and wash it thoroughly and let it dry
