1. BIO-DATA
Dr. ParashuramSahoo,bornon7th
, Sep.,1955, passedM.Sc.(chemistry) in firstclassfromVani Vihar,
Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha in 1977. He received his doctorate degree from
Madras UniversityinElectrochemistryduring2000. His Ph.D.workon ‘Electrodeposition
of metalsattrace level forpreparationof radioactivesources’isbeingusedinmanybasic
and engineering studies in the department of atomic energy. A brief resume of R&D
activities carried out by Dr. Sahoo is mentioned below.
During 1978-1983 Dr. Sahoo worked in Heavy Water Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre,
Mumbai,Indiaand HeavyWater Project,Kota,India in a juniorscientificposition.He workedinHWP
(Kota) during commissioning of Heavy Water Plant.
Dutiesinvolvedcoordinationincommissioningachemicalcontrol laboratory,whichtookcare
for quality control of heavy water and all sorts of chemistry support in each stage of heavy
water production.
Procurement,commissioning,calibrationandtesting of variousanalytical instruments –Mass
Spectrometer, IR Spectrometer, Refractometer, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Gas
Chromatograph, Thermal conductivity analyser etc.
Standardisationanddevelopmentof analytical processesinorder, tomeetthe plant’s need.
Preparation of technical reports.
During 1983-1987 Dr. Sahoo was deputed to National Test House, Kolkata, India, the largest
multidisciplinary industrialtestinglaboratory, fromwhere the CSIR was originated. He workedthere
as a Chemist and he was involved in following activities.
Qualitycontrol, testing andevaluation of readymixedpaints, enamels, pigments, varnishes
Giving adequate suggestions to paint manufacturers of India for improvement of their
products
Preparation of technical reports, quality control test certificates and issuing them to the
concerned customers
During1987-2015 he workedasscientificofficerinvariouslevelsstartingfromworkinglevel scientist
to scientist in senior management grade in Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR),
Kalpakkam, India. He was in Scientific officer (G) grade before his superannuation. He headed
Innovative Instrumentation Section (IIS) in IGCAR from 2009 to 2015.
Job responsibility:
Development & deployment of Innovative Sensors: The main objective of his research in IIS
is to lookfor simple solutiontowardsdevelopmentof innovative sensorsandinstrumentsof
differentkinds. The mainobjective of researchtowards thisdirectionisto realize a concept,
examiningitinlaboratorytests,testingwithprototypedevicesandultimatelytobringoutthe
final productto be usedin laboratoriesandindustries. Towardsthisobjective Dr.Sahoo with
his team developedindigenoushigh performance sensors such as conductivity, capacitance,
temperature, pressure, vacuum, level both continuous and discrete types, concentration,
radiationdose, position,pHand EMF etc. whichcouldbe successfullyusedinquality control
laboratories and plants of nuclear industries besides their deployment in other laboratories,
industries and research laboratories including educational institutes. Such types of sensors
constitute a new class of sensors viz. Pulsating sensors. Using those indigenous sensors, he
developed many instruments such as rapid titration facilities, flow injection analyser,
transformer oil dielectric degradation device, low range but high resolution, fast response
2. pressure sensors with complete instrumentation package for continuous measurement of
differential pressure in India’s Fast Breeder Reactor etc. He also used his sensors and
instrumentstodevelopmanyphysical andphysico-chemical technique anddeployedthemin
various nuclear facilities. The details of his innovative approach towards development and
deployment of sensors, instruments and physico-chemical techniques of different kindsare
described in some of his publications. With this development he proves that with sincere
effort, systematic approach, patience and team work it is possible to bring out many new
instrumentsandtechniquesinverylowcostwhichare asparorevenbetterthanthe imported
products.
Sodiumfire study: Towardsthis activity he investigatedonradioactivityrelease fromsodium
firesand physico-chemical characterizationof sodiumaerosols,activitydepositioninsodium
loop in the context of fast reactor safety program.
Electro depositionofmetalsattracelevel inthe contextof preparationof radioactivesources
for fast reactor application program
In addition to these R&D activities he guided a team of scientific and technical personnel of
different disciplines to make them familiar with innovative sensors development pursued in
IGCAR and motivated them to conduct independent research in this nascent field.
Preparation of scientific and technical reports and reviewing technical reports, project
reports, Ph.D. thesis
Acted as reviewer in many peer reviewed international journals.
Acted as a Guest Editor in an International journal of repute.
Presented many technical lectures in scientific audiences, to students who were continuing
their Ph.D and M.Tech courses.
Acted as member of many technical committees in IGCAR
Awards/ Honour/Membership of Professional bodies
Life members of professional bodies such as Society of Electro Chemical Science &
Technology(SAEST),IndianNuclearSociety(INS), Association of Waste Management and
Remediation of Environment (AWARE)
