Development and implementation of Service Learning programs and
other forms of Community engagement
2012/2013: Initiated and developed a Service learning program to mentor
Accounting pre-service teachers’ learning how to teach. The purpose of
this program was twofold, firstly, to enhance pre-service teachers’
Pedagogical Content Knowledge and secondly, to promote Accounting
education in the Further Education and Training band in schools. More
than 150 Learners from Thandokhulu High School were invited to attend
Accounting classes on a Saturday at no expense to the learners. I was the

Project leader of this program. The following B Ed:FET (EMS) courses
participated in the program:
- Curriculum Studies: Accounting 1 (Tutored Grade 9 learners)
- Curriculum Studies: Accounting 2 (Tutored Grade 10 learners)
- Curriculum Studies: Accounting 3 (Tutored Grade 11 learners)
- Curriculum Studies: Accounting 4 (Tutored Grade 12 learners)
2014: The Service Learning program implemented in 2012/3 was
expanded to approximately 13 schools. These schools were identified by
Curriculum Advisors as schools who underperform in Accounting
Education. More than 350 learners participated in the program. The
following B Ed:FET (EMS) and PGCE courses participated in the program:
- Curriculum Studies: Accounting 1 (Tutored Grade 9 learners)
- Curriculum Studies: Accounting 2 (Tutored Grade 10 learners)
- Curriculum Studies: Accounting 3 (Tutored Grade 11 learners)
- Curriculum Studies: Accounting 4 (Tutored Grade 12 learners)
- PGCE Curriculum Studies: Accounting (Tutored Grade 10, 11 and 12
learners)
2015: Invited to write a proposal in collaboration with CPUT’s
Advancement and Community Engagement Departments respectively. My
Service Learning model was referred to as part of the terms of reference
specified in the tender. CPUT was awarded this tender to the value of
R1 000 098 in February 2015. I am currently the Project manager of the
2nd
Chance Matric Project. My key responsibilities are: developing and
implementing a class and assessment timetable; recruiting educators and
tutor assistance; developing a tutor program for learners at risk of failing
a subject; chairing monthly meetings with project stakeholders,
appointment of external moderators; learner retention; procuring
teaching material and stationery.
