4. WELCOME MESSAGE
Dear Valued Member of the International Welding Community,
I am thrilled to extend a personal invitation to you to attend the 69th IIW
Annual Assembly and International Conference 2016 in Melbourne, Australia,
from 10 to 15 July.
As the President of the Welding Technology Institute of Australia (WTIA),
I am honoured to host the premier annual event for the global welding and
fabrication industry in 2016, and delighted to welcome visitors from around
the world to Australia, particularly Melbourne.
The beautiful city of Melbourne has plenty to offer, for first time visitors right
through to even the most seasoned of travellers. From its labyrinth laneways,
sporting venues and shopping precincts, there’s always something to explore.
Whilst here, you can visit the bars, restaurants and cultural hubs along the
Yarra River. Wander down Southbank to see the Melbourne Arts Precinct,
home to the Arts Centre and the National Gallery of Victoria. Or, if you’d
prefer a shopping trip, then Chapel Street and the Queen Victoria Market
are must-see hot spots. If you’re keen to adventure outside of the city limits,
use Melbourne as your gateway to the lush, green wine country of the Yarra
Valley, the coastal vistas of the Great Ocean Road, or even the always-popular
fairy penguin parade at Phillip Island.
The theme of the 2016 International Conference
is From Concept to Decommission: The Total Life
Cycle of Welded Components. The Conference
will bring together the international welding
community, fostering long-term collaborative
professional relationships. Together, we will
explore the importance of the life cycle of welded
components, with a particular focus on: welding
as part of the manufacturing process, welding
automation, fitness for purpose and service, and
repair and life extension. This will be supported
by a robust program of off-site technical visits
and exciting social events.
The IIW Annual Assembly will encourage multi-disciplinary discussion and
debate, focused on the challenges and opportunities currently faced by
all companies, academics and individuals operating in today’s industrial,
welding and fabrication sectors. With representatives from most of than 59
IIW member countries and various technical experts expected to attend in
2016, the Assembly and IIW Commission sessions will delve into the most
important issues facing our industry today.
I look forward to seeing you in Melbourne in July 2016 for the best
IIW Conference and Assembly yet.
Kind regards,
John Burnett
WTIA President 2013 – 2016
The IIW Annual Assembly and

6. WELCOME TO MELBOURNE,
AUSTRALIA
Australia: In Victoria you can search for kangaroos
and koalas in their natural habitat, enjoy a night or
two in the wine regions, explore the coast line or
walk in the canopy of rainforest treetops. Central
Australia offers the fabulous and wondrous icon,
Uluru (Ayers Rock). A 3-day tour to this area is full
of aboriginal dreamtime and spectacular desert
country. Then of course, North Queensland where
the rainforest meets the ocean. Arrive into Cairns
and travel north up the coast line to Port Douglas.
This will provide you with a gateway to the Great
Barrier Reef where you will discover amazing coral
formations - an unforgetable experience. If you
only have 2-days, then why not visit Sydney – the
jewel in Australia’s crown- whose harbour and
beaches will astound you.
For an insight into the endless options on offer for
you to experience, please visit the website.
Melbourne: Recognised as one of the world’s
most liveable cities, Melbourne is set around
the shores of Port Phillip Bay. The city itself, laid
out in a large rectangle and boasting a lively and
cosmopolitan pulse, sits on the northern banks of
the Yarra River, about five kilometres from the bay.
Melbourne truly understands how to conduct
business on a global level and has also been
aptly described as Australia’s most stylish city
after sunset. There are plenty of things to do in
Melbourne. Easily navigated on foot, the city’s
confidence and success are infectious.
A range of activities and events are on offer in
the City of Melbourne, please click here to find
out more.

18. IIW INTERNATIONAL
CONFERENCE PROGRAM
From Concept to Decommissioning:
The Total Life Cycle of Welded Components
Welding affects the long-term life cycle and performance of so many of the
world’s assets, across sectors as diverse as utilities and manufacturing, to
mining, oil and gas. Welding is the bond that holds together bridges that link
nations, oil platforms that power entire countries, and manufacturing plants
that feed entire communities.
The entire life cycle of welded components will be explored at the 69th IIW
Annual Assembly and International Conference, from initial concept, design and
manufacturing, right through to the installation, maintenance, and repair of
welded components, as well as life extension and decommissioning.
High quality welded components enable companies and governments to
prolong the life cycle of their assets, at a lower cost, with minimised risk and
improved safety. If harnessed correctly, welding technology actually has the
power to make the world a better place. Durable welded components ensure
that the companies and governments, that own and run our assets, do so more
efficiently, more sustainably, and much more profitably.
High quality, consistent welded components have the ability to:
• Reduce capital costs and ongoing operating costs of assets
• Improve asset operating performance
• Improve environmental and health and safety impacts
• Improve regulatory compliance and reduce legal risks of the
asset owners
The 69th IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference in Melbourne,
Australia will explore the importance of the life cycle of welded components,
with a particular focus on:
• Welding as part of the manufacturing process
• Welding automation
• Fitness for purpose and service
• Repair and life extension.
