Lung cancer begins in the lungs and is primarily caused by long-term exposure to tobacco smoke and other harmful substances. There are two main types of lung cancer: non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. Symptoms of lung cancer include coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and weight loss. Lung cancer is staged based on how far it has spread, from stage I where the cancer is contained in the lung to stage IV where the cancer has spread to distant organs. The main causes of lung cancer are tobacco smoke, secondhand smoke, radon gas, occupational exposures, and air pollution.
