There are two different time levels
Narrative present and narrative
past.Etsuko’s narrative present is set in
England in the early 1980s, during the time
after Etsuko learns the news of Keiko’s
suicide. Niki, her younger daughter of her
second British husband, comes to visit on
‘a mission’ to reassure that Etsuko is not
responsible for Keiko’s death.
