2. What is visual perception
It refers to information that is perceived through eyes
Perception refers to the interpretation of what we are
taking in through senses to form meaning full of the
environment.
The dynamic process receiving the environment through
sensory impulses and translating those impulses into
meaning based on a previously developed understanding
of that environment(Bouska at.,1990)
Perceptual function is the interpretation of visual sensory
information. If a problem exists in this area, it can affect
the child’s performance in areas of occupation(Lee, 2006).
3. What is visual perceptual process
Visual foundation skills: visual oculomotor movements,
visual fields and visual acuity.
Visual attention
Visual scanning
Visual pattern recognition
Visual memory
Visual cognition
Adaptation through vision
Note: need to be addressed properly before we start
functional task with kids such as play, leisure, reading,
writing, ADL, social interaction.
4. Purpose of assessment
To identify limitation in activity or occupation.
To link that limitation to presence of a visual impairment.
To develop appropriate intervention plan based on
assessment.
5. Visual attention is the ability to attend to visual stimuli. It
involves alertness, selective attention, vigilance, and
divided attention.
Scanning is pattern recognition dependent on organized,
thorough scanning of them visual environment. The retina
must record all of the detail of the scene systematically
through the use of a scan path.
Pattern recognition is the ability to store information in
memory requiring pattern detection and recognition. This
is the identification of the salient features of an object,
including the configurable aspects (i.e., shape, contour,
and general features) and the specific features of an
object (i.e., details of color, shading, and texture).
6. Visual memory is the mental manipulation of visual
information needed for visual cognition and requires the
ability to retain the information in memory for immediate
recall or to store for later retrieval.
Involves integrating visual processing information with past
experience (both long term and short term).
Visual cognition is the ability to mentally manipulate visual
information and integrate it with other sensory information
to solve problems, formulate plans, and make decisions.
7. Evaluator needs to address before
evaluation starts
Assessment must be familiar environment based such as pictures.
Child must be instructed with an example before actual test starts.
Distraction free environment.
Test should start from structure to unstructured way.
Difficulty level should be graded once child complete a task quickly and
accurately.
