TECHNIQUES OF
THERAPEUTIC
COMMUNICATION

1.USING SILENCE
 Accepting pauses or silences that may extend for
several seconds or minutes Without interjecting
any verbal response
Eg. Sitting quietly
2.PROVIDING GENERAL LEADS
Using statements or questions that,
 a) Encourage the client to verbalize
 b) choose a topic conversation
Eg.
can you tell me how it is for you?
3.BEING SPECIFIC AND TENTATIVE
Making statements that are specific to general
and tentative rather than absolute
Eg.
 Are you in pain?
4.USING OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS
Asking broad questions that lead or invite the
client to explore thoughts or feeling
Eg.
 What is your opinion?
5.USING TOUCH
Providing appropriate forms of touch to
reinforce caring feelings.
6.RESTATING OR PARAPHRASING
actively listening for the clients basic message
and then reporting those the thoughts and feelings
in similar words.
Eg.
client: I couldn’t manage to eat any dinner last night
Nurse: you had difficulty eating yesterday
7.SEEKING CLARIFICATION
A method of making the clients broad overall
meaning of the message more understandable.
Eg. I am puzzled
I am not sure I understand that’
8.OFFERING SELF
suggesting once presence interest, or which to
understand the client without making any demands
or attaching conditions that the client must comply
with to receive the nurse attention
Eg.I will help you to dress to go home, if you like you
8.GIVING INFORMATION
Providing in a simple and direct manner,specific
factual information the client has made not
request.
Eg.
your surgery is scheduled for 11 pm
9.ACKNOWLEDGING
Giving recognizing in a non judgmental way.
Acknowledgement may be ith or without
understanding verbal or nonverbal.
Eg.
you walked twice as far today with your walker
10.CLARIFYING TIME OR SEQUENCE
Helping the client clarify an event, situation or
happening in relationship to time.
Eg.
Client: I vomited this morning
Nurse: was the after breakfast?
11.PRESENTING REALITY
Helping the client to differentiate the real from
the unreal.
Eg. I see shadow from window coverings
12.REFLECTING
directing leads feeling, questions or content
back to clients to enable them to explore their own
ideas and feelings about a situation
Eg.
Client: what can I do?
Nurse: what do you think would be helpful.
13.SUMMARIZING AND PLANNING
Stating a main points of a discussion to clarify
the relevant points discussed. This technique
useful to end of an interview.
EG. During the past half hour we have talked about…
