EVALUATION Q1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
ANDREW GOODWIN’STHEORY
There are some points in Andrew Goodwin’sTheory which can be applied to my
product. I will be showing examples throughout my product of what I think can be
applied, how and why. These are the following points I feel that apply to my
product:
 There is a link between the lyrics and the visuals of the music video
 There are many close-ups of the Artists Face
 The notion of looking
ANDREW GOODWIN’STHEORY
There is a link between the lyrics and the visuals of the music video. The main
character displayed is a young teenager, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a face
mask to conceal his identity, presenting that he is indeed a rebel, along with him
ignoring signs which say no trespassing. The lyrics which match with the visuals is
the chorus, ‘living like we’re renegades’ which means rebel.
The young teenager is wearing the
appropriate clothing also to appeal to the
audience that he indeed does not care
about society’s rules and wants to
live a free life. He is indeed a Renegade.
ANDREW GOODWIN’STHEORY
There are many close up’s of the Artist’s face. I have created a lot of close ups of the
characters face so that the audience can be intrigued, into knowing who the man is
behind the mask who wants to escape society’s rules and live a free life, being a
renegade. This creates tension and hooks in the audience, making them watch to
the end to find out who this person really is.
Its important to show close ups of the
main character as in a way, it allows the
character and the audience to make a
connection. It also shows the audience his
clothing that represent what he stands for,
being rebellious, hiding his identity.
ANDREW GOODWIN’STHEORY
The notion of looking. This point in the theory can be partially applied to my
product, as our main character feels like he is being watched as we are the ones
watching him, looking into his life. In the part of this scene shown below, the male
turns and glances at the camera as if he saw someone and begins to run, fleeing
from the camera.
TODOROV’STHEORY
This theory suggests that a narrative in a music video follows a three part structure.
I do not think this theory can be applied to my product as it is not a three part
structure and my product doesn’t have a very strong narrative. In parts of my music
video, we see the main character exploring different parts of areas which he does
not have access to, he is however trying to leave his old life behind and live in peace
and harmony as we see him take his mask off overlooking one of the areas that he
explored without permission, trespassing like a rebel. The only equilibrium that I
think is disturbed Is when the main character see’s someone behind him and starts
to flee as the chorus starts, but I don’t feel that this strong enough to disturb the
equilibrium as this is the only scene that something bad happens to the main
character in the music video. Nothing was restored or taken from him, he is just
trying to find a new life.
BARTHES’THEORY
This theory states that there are five codes that occur in every narrative, in any
order which is hermeneutic, enigma, semantic, symbolic and cultural codes.
Hermeneutic or action are close ups of the main character, creating mystery to who
this person really is. Enigma is when the main character glances at the camera and
starts to flee, making the audience wonder what will happen next, will he get
caught? Semantic, the clothing such as the hoodie the youth is wearing suggests
that he is a ‘rebel’, a rule breaker due to him hiding his true identity. Cultural, many
audiences expect a law breaker to be found and arrested but in this narrative, the
young male is able to roam free, and his peace is not disturbed (equilibrium).
However, I couldn’t link anything to the Symbolic code within my music video as I
feel that it does not exercise opposites to show contrast and create greater
meaning, tension, drama and character development.
