Dear Mr. Gaffney:
The Assistant Project Director position found on selectleaders.com has given me much interest in
your company. The way John Hardy Group conducts business inspires me to want to achieve the
same goals as a potential employee. I have attached my resume for your review.
Following December 2015, I will be graduating from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of
Science in University Studies, with concentrations of Math, Construction Engineering and
Integrative Studies. I have developed advanced problem solving, customer service and leadership
skills while being in school and through seasonal jobs. I also have served as an intern at JQM
Management & Consulting, where I trained to be a project manager for a total of eleven months.
These experiences have provided me with the knowledge and intangibles to be prepared for your
Assistant Project Director position.
I would appreciate the opportunity to further discuss my qualifications for this position with you
in an interview if possible. I can be reached at (817) 897-9871. Thank you for your time.

All my life I have wanted to become a professional athlete in either basketball or football
and have always strived for success in sports to make for a better life for myself. I have put in the
time and effort to make it here to Texas tech to play football and to get closer to my dream of
playing in the NFL. While in my eyes playing in the NFL is a seriously real and achievable goal,
many others seem to think that the odds of this dream turning into reality make for this to not be
considered a real career goal. Despite what people think I still and always will believe that with
the right amount of work put towards becoming the best athlete I can be, I drastically increase
my true ambition of having an NFL career, even though other goals are more attainable. With
that being said I have turned to the next best thing in my eyes, which is teaching at the high
school level, and being able to coach the sports I love as well.
I have grown to live a comfortable lifestyle and would love to always maintain that, but I
don’t need money to be happy. I do understand that money makes the world go round and that
having a teaching job where you also coach for a high school is not anywhere near the amount of
being an NFL player. But there is a certain amount of pleasure I would receive from still being
able to be around the sport I love if I wasn’t able to make it professionally. I have thought long
and hard amount the time frame in which I would become that teacher/coach and have
considered several options. The option that has been most comparable in my eyes is that right
after school I embark on a professional career with my brother, working in his construction
business. This would give me a job right away with higher pay than I would get at a high school
coaching. I would have time to learn the ropes around his business while further advancing my
professional career, in hopes of one day taking over the family business and running that on the

side while I focused on my teaching and coaching career. In my eyes it seems like a win-win
situation but I know it will take a lot of time and hard work to get there.
The steps I would need to be successful in my career goal of construction manager turned
teacher/coach have already begun here at Texas tech. With my math minor background, I will be
apply to have the competence to teach math at the high school level and with my sports
background be a coach as well. While on the other hand, the assets I have began learning here at
Texas tech through the construction-engineering program will help me translate more seamlessly
into the construction business. Both of these worlds will be able to combine through the help of
my integrative studies skills, which I am also minoring in here. I never knew how well my life
would come together but these necessary step I have been taking really seem to help me stay on
track for the long term goals I have.
Based on the fact that I am still chasing my NFL ambitions I have many short-term objectives I
want to achieve in order to put myself in a better position to succeed. In terms of my football
goals, one objective I have for the short term is just to get in peak physical condition for the
upcoming season. I also have an objective of becoming a starter but the last objective, which is
most important, is to enjoy the rest of my college athletic career. While those objectives are my
primary objectives to reaching my ultimate happiness I do have other short-term objectives for
my long-term goal of teaching and becoming a coach. Since the main reason I would be teaching
is because I have to in order to be a coach I think it is safe to safe my primary objective for the
short term would be to branch out and get connections in the football world from the people I
meet while being a student athlete here at Tech. The next part of that, which is almost equally
important, would be to master my math skills. I don’t want to be a teacher who cannot fully

assist my student because I am not one hundred percent competent at my craft. Lastly, I hope to
be able to learn from my upcoming engineering classes to think about ways to solve problems
like never before. I figure that would not only be helpful if I were to become a construction
engineer in the future but also to just be a better complex problem solver.
My three areas of concentration for my degree plan would include integrative studies,
mathematics and engineering. Since this degree plan allows me to branch out into three separate
fields of studies to minor in, I am able to broaden my horizons as a student and professional. I
decided on my three areas of concentration by simply assessing my strengths and weaknesses as
a student and what I would not only enjoy studying, but what I would also enjoy as a career path.
As I said, if I chose to be a math teacher and coach later on in life, having a math minor would
allow me to do so. Also since I have a background in sports and have competed at a high level
that would help with coaching and having connections. On the other hand, if I decided to be an
engineer or take the construction career path the ability to be able to build and manufacturing
things as well as think critically would be taught within the engineering minor and would
provide me the path to achieve my wishes. The best part of this class is that it has helped me
develop the tools and knowledge needed to translate each of my fields of studies into the best
possible skill set I would be capable of achieving. I have learned a lot about searching for jobs
and in particular which job suits my skills and interests best. I am very grateful for the chance to
learn more about my potential career and to become a member of the Linkedin community. I am
sure that because of this class I am much closer to becoming a professional in the career of my
choice.
