Career Goals For Portfolio
This semester, in Chancellor Kent Hance’s strengths based seminar, the Chancellor said,
“Success is being happy doing what you are doing.” This simple quote is very inspirational to me
because of its underlying complexity. My definition of success is the completion of something
that I set out to accomplish. In hopes of achieving personal success, I have set three long-term
career goals, and I have three subsequent short-term goals that will facilitate my long-term
success. Fortunately, I have been given some new tools to help me along the way, and I must
implement some new strategies in order to be where I see myself in ten years.
My first long-term career goal is honestly what drives me every single day that I am at
work, school, or working out. It is a career goal of mine to get an Industrial Engineering position
at Bell Helicopter. Since childhood, I have been fascinated with helicopters. They are so fast and
agile, but they have the most interesting design. Not only do they fly horizontally, but they also
have the unique ability to fly straight up, fly straight down, or even hover in one place. Besides
my fascination with helicopters, Bell Helicopter interests me because of the prestige that comes
with the name. Bell Helicopter is responsible for inventing the rotting mechanism associated
with the military hybrid aircraft know as the Osprey. I cannot explain how exciting it is to think
about being on a team that is the cutting edge. The world changes with innovation, and I want to
be a part of changing the world. Not only do I want to work for an established engineering firm
like Bell Helicopter, but also I want to hold a particular position. My idea of success is working
my way up, and learning enough about the company to become a trainer. I know from my
experience in the food service industry that it takes plenty of experience and a great deal of
additional specialty training to be considered for a training position. I do not want to be
considered a know-it-all, but being the lifelong learner that I am, I really do want to know it all.

Moreover, I am a great teacher. I have an innate ability to connect with people through
conversation. Unfortunately, at this point in my life, I do not have the desire to actually pursue a
teaching career. So, training entry level, or transfer employees seems like the perfect fit. My last
long-term goal is to gain the title of earn the title of senior engineer. I want to have ten to fifteen
years of first-hand experience doing logistics and quality control. I want to learn to do my job so
well that it becomes second nature. This particular goal will come with time, but it takes a person
that will soak up knowledge like a sponge, to learn in this type of depth.
“A goal without a timeline is simply a dream.” This is another quote by a man that I have
great respect for, Robert Herjavec. He is a very successful business mogul that I have looked up
to in my own life. In order for my goals to carry any weight at all, they need to be supported by
stepping-stones that build a path to the finish line. My college grade point average is something I
have struggled with since my first semester at Texas Tech. It is my personal goal to raise my
grade point average to 2.75. Achieving this goal is fundamental in being eligible for the Bell
Helicopter internship. Consequently, my second short term goal is to have a resume strong
enough to be considered for the summer Industrial Engineering and Logistics internship in Piney
Flats, Tennessee through Bell Helicopter. Here I am able to enjoy first hand experience in the
field that I have been studying for so long. That experience is priceless, especially in terms of
having my name in the ring for future job offers with Bell Helicopter, or and Engineering firm
for that matter. Hopefully, my third short term goal with follow that internship experience. That
short-term goal is to graduate from the Whitacre College of Engineering. Graduating from Texas
Tech University is a goal that I have had since I began high school here in Lubbock. My
grandmother graduated from Texas Tech with degrees in Spanish and English. She is another

great hero of mine, and I would love to be able to make her and the rest of my family proud with
a diploma from Texas Tech.
This semester in Career and professional development, I have learned many things that I
must know in order to get to each and every goal successfully. This year I learned about being a
professional in the real world. From building my image with my resume and electronic footprint,
to ethics and etiquette and networking, my professional profile has completely changed this
semester. I have really gone into depth in the search for what I want to do with my life. I feel like
I have gotten to know the expectations and preferences of some of the companies that I could be
working for soon. Also, this semester, I have strengthened my interviewing skills. My mock
interview at the career center with Amy Bafford was very eye opening. She stressed that
preparation could mean the differences between me and some else in the working world. I am
making an effort to over prepare for every major professional encounter from here on out. I
know that prioritizing will be my greatest obstacle, but I feel that learning professionalism in this
class has altered my perception on my personal priorities.
I know that I am capable of these goals that I have set for myself, but I cannot simply
want it. I have to keep up with things like my updated resume, and continue to do mock
interviews until I am no longer nervous. Doing these things will help my complete my short-term
goals and hopefully my long-term goals as well. I find motivation in wanting to be happy, travel,
and pass on knowledge to others. By completing my goals, I will in turn be happy doing what I
am doing. After all, that is the Kent Hance standard for success.
