A new Coder Dojo club has started in St.
Joseph’s secondary school in Borriso-
leigh. The St. Joseph’s Coder Dojo is
run by volunteers within the school and
pupils have the opportunity to learn how
to code, develop websites, mobile appli-
cations, programs, games, electronics
and more. “With the ever increasing de-
mand for ICT graduates and the in-
creased exposure to digital media and
systems, students are hungry for knowl-
edge and information in the area. We
are delighted to be leading the way in
this field and preparing our students for
the rapidly changing working environ-
ment” said Kevin McCarthy, Principal at
St. Joseph’s.
Jacqueline Humphries, IT Lecturer from
LIT Thurles was involved in starting the
Coder Dojo movement in Tipperary in
2012, and is assisting St. Joseph’s in es-
tablishing the club. She stated that Cod-
er Dojo clubs provide an opportunity for
young people to experiment and learn
from their peers and from experts in the
industry in a fun and interactive way. “I
came in contact with St. Joseph’s whilst
judging at the SciFest competition, and I
was taken aback with the sheer number
of projects entered by the school. They
were given the accolade of the “Best
School for Science” by SciFest, and
have also won at BT Young Scientist
last year. Their approach to teaching
science and technology in a fun and en-
gaging way is exemplary, and so I feel
the Coder Dojo is the perfect fit, and the
next logical step for the school, and I’m
delighted to be in a position to help.”
said Ms. Humphries.
Kevin McCarthy said he was thrilled to
provide the opportunity to their boys and
girls. A number of our students have
been attending Coder Dojo for several
years in other venues, and so to bring
their knowledge and experience back to
the school is invaluable.
Teacher,Mr.Cathal O’Shea will co-ordi-
nate this club on Wednesday evenings
4.00pm to 5.00pm. Leading the group is
our own John Ryan who has won nu-
merous programming competitions in-
cluding the Google Call to Code,
Coolest Projects Award and reached the
final six of the All-Ireland Programming
Olympiad team.
The Coder Dojo club is limited to stu-
dents of St. Joseph’s and will run once a
week after school.

The Annual G.A.A. Memorabilia Fair will
be held on Sunday, December 6th, from
12-4pm in Thurles Sarsfields Social Centre
and will give customers a chance to browse
and search a large selection of match pro-
grams, club histories, hurling, football,
camogie and handball publications as well
as other G.A.A. material. In the pleasant
and spacious surroundings of Thurles Sars-
fields G.A.A. Centre collectors and sellers

where it is hoped they will find plenty to

Tipperary County Council have won
the Public Sector award at the Nation-
al Sustainable Energy Authority of
Ireland awards ceremony.
The council was up against three other
finalists, Gas Networks, DAA and An
Post.
The council was applauded for being
leaders with regard to energy manage-
ment performance and in their uptake
of renewable energy solutions

there were four finalists in the Public
Sector category, which was open to
the public to vote for their top three
leaders. Tipperary County Council
fought off strong competition from
household names such as Gas Net-
works, Dublin Airport Authority and

Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County
Council, Cllr. Seamus Hanafin and
Director, Matt Shortt accepted the
award at a gala ceremony in Kilmain-
ham Gaol. Accepting the award Cllr
Hanafin, said “It is an outstanding
achievement for Tipperary County
Council in partnership with Tipperary
Energy Agency to get national recog-
nition for its commitment to sustaina-
ble energy. There are huge benefits for
the council as well as the people of
Tipperary including reduced costs,
providing retrofits for our own build-
ings and houses and reducing our car-
bon footprint. This award is a credit to
everyone involved for all their hard
work.”

Santa will land his helicopter in
Clonoulty school grounds on Sun-
day 12th December. He will landing
at 1pm sharp and will be there from
1pm to 3pm. Be sure to register ear-
ly so as not to miss any of the fun.
There will be plenty of things for the
children to enjoy including story
time with Mrs Claus, seeing some
elves in action, a story and some
goodies from Santa Claus and plenty
of other fun surprise entertainment.
There will also be a wonderful op-
portunity to win a spin for 3 in San-
ta's helicopeter together with some

A young Tipperary entrepreneur has
won a place at the national final of the
prestigious ‘Ireland’s Best Young Entre-
preneur’ competition, for a chance to
share a €100,000 investment fund.
Philip Martin from Blanco Nino Ltd
based in Clonmel is representing the re-
gion in the Best Start up Business cate-
gory at the national final in Dublin this
December and has already won €20,000
in investment from the Local Enterprise
Office in Tipperary.
Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur
(IBYE) competition is an integral part of
the Action Plan for Jobs and is support-
ed by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise
and Innovation through the 31 Local En-
terprise Offices around the country.
At the IBYE Regional Final, three local
business owners and new start-ups from
Tipperary, all under the age of 30, went
head-to-head with other county winners
from Clare, Limerick and Kerry.
The nominees were all interviewed by a
three member judging panel and had to
deliver a business pitch, live. Assessed
on criteria such as business innovation,
job creation potential and financial plan-
ning, the announcement of the national
finalists was made at a reception in The
Abbey Court Hotel in Nenagh with spe-
cial guest Minister Alan Kelly TD. Oth-
er guests at the Regional Final included
Cllr Seamus Hanafin, Cathaoirleach of
Tipperary County Council Mr. Joe Mac-
Grath, Chief Executive Tipperary Coun-
ty Council and Ms Rita Guinan, Head of
Enterprise, Tipperary Local Enterprise
Office.
Congratulating the finalists, the Minister
for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Ri-
chard Bruton T.D. said: “Central to our
plans for jobs and growth is supporting
more businesses to start-up. Part of this
plan is also fostering a stronger culture
of entrepreneurship and promoting start-
up business as a career option for young
people. That is what is behind this com-
petition to find the best young entrepre-
neur in each region, and ultimately
Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur. I am
delighted to congratulate all involved.”
The local winner now faces tough com-
petition from 23 other finalists, emerg-
ing from eight regional finals. The
€100,000 investment fund in December
is divided up across four prizes:
Best New Idea (€20,000 investment)
Best Start Up (€30,000 investment)
Best Established Business (€30,000 in-
vestment)
Overall Winner of ‘Ireland’s Best
Young Entrepreneur’ (an additional
€20,000 investment)
More than 400 business owners and
start-ups from around the country have
already benefitted from intensive busi-
ness bootcamps and mentoring pro-
grammes through the network of Local
Enterprise Offices, as part of the compe-
tition.
The Head of Enterprise with the Local
Enterprise Office Tipperary, Rita
Guinan, said: “We are proud and hon-
oured to have a representative at the na-
tional final in December, as over 1,000
young entrepreneurs entered from every
county in Ireland, with tough competi-
tion across each category. Our finalist
now has a chance of being crowned ‘Ire-
land’s Best Young Entrepreneur’ and to
win additional investment of up to
€50,000 for their business. We’d also
like to congratulate all our other nomi-
nees and entrants, who ‘flew the flag’
for us at the county and regional finals
and the Local Enterprise Office looks
forward to supporting their businesses
into the future.”

Anxiety (continued from previous issue)
You can see by this stage of how
destructive social anxiety is. It is so
disabling because sufferers feel helpless
under the onslaught of its symptoms,
which are psychological and physical.
The psychological symptoms of social
phobia are fear, anxiety and worry.
These unpleasant feelings may come on
months before the event, and you worry
about making a fool of yourself in public,
making a mess of a speech, being seen
by others as being nervous, being
judged and ridiculed, and being self-
conscious. It is as if you are the centre of
attraction for the wrong reasons. You
know that this is ridiculous and
irrational, but this does not ease the
worry and the fear.
This intense fear, worry and anxiety will
affect your body and bring on
unpleasant physical reactions. Your
mouth may feel parched, sweat breaks
out on your forehead, your voice
becomes shaky, your hands feel
clammy, your face twitches, and you
may feel faint. Some of the reactions are
similar to those of panic attacks. A
common reaction is palpitations, which
in themselves can cause a lot of stress
and fear. Those who suffer from this
complaint may tremble and sweat, even
at the thought of going to a celebration.
They immediately become tense, blush,
and often feel dizzy. They may
experience an overwhelming sense of
despair and hopelessness; feel a knot in
their stomach, and a strong desire to
escape from the social event.
One of the principal symptoms of social
phobia affects your breathing. As the
stress and anxiety increases, you will
begin to breathe rapidly, and this in turn
triggers other distressing physical
symptoms such as dizziness, a choking
feeling, increased pulse, and tension.
These can be relieved by deep
breathing. Meditation and relaxation
techniques also provide some relief. On
a longer term examine your thoughts
and try to change them. Negative
thoughts predicting disaster or
embarrassment create a negative
outlook and an irrational inner world,
which nourishes the anxiety. Changing
these thoughts to more positive ones
starves the anxiety and destroys the
inner irrational, unreal world that you
have created. For example you could
change the following negative thoughts,
‘I know I’m going to make a right idiot
(eejit!) of myself’, ‘I can’t do this’, ‘ this
is too much for me’, ‘I know I’m going to
get a panic attack’, ‘people will think I
am a bore’, people will think I’m stupid’,
‘I know I’m going to sweat, and what will
people say’, ‘I know my mouth will dry
up and I will speak with a squeak’, and
so on. You might substitute the
following positive thoughts for these
negative thoughts - ‘I know what I’m
talking about, I have researched what I
am going to say’, ‘I might sweat. So
what!’, ‘it is normal to be nervous when
speaking in public’, ‘I will have a glass of
water nearby if my mouth gets dry. It’s
normal to have a dry mouth when
speaking publicly’, ‘I won’t get a panic
attack. I know how to breathe deeply to
ensure my breathing is ok’, ‘People
won’t think that I’m boring. If some do,
so what!’, ‘I am not that important that
people will focus on me’. Try to put in a
thought that is exactly the opposite of
the negative thought. You could practise
this on a daily basis until it becomes
second nature to you.
It is important to understand that
positive thinking and behaviour can
undo the negative pathways hardwired
on our brain and replace them with
positive ones. This is well researched
and proved. I have found it successful
in my own regard. It takes about a year
or so for this to work.
