energy form of Light.
~ Incredibly violent and highly
energetic events like Stars
exploding can generate
Gamma rays

3. A gamma spectrum is created by taking
measurements of emitted gamma-rays
and processing them.
A detector could identify an unknown
radioisotope by identifying features on the
gamma spectrum and comparing them to
known spectra

Gamma Spectra .

?

6. ~ Calibration means that the scintillator
detector must be calibrated with gamma
rays of a number of known energies before
it can be used to measure the energy
spectrum of an unknown source.

CALIBRATION
IMPORTANT ?

8. The calibration results in a relationship that
allows you to associate a given channel
number with its appropriate energy.
Detector calibration allows the spectrum to
be interpreted in terms of ENERGY ,rather
than channel number or voltage, or number of
pulses.

9. HOW TO CALIBRATE ENERGY?
• Depending on relation between energy and
channel, we can calibrate energy by measuring
the pulse height spectrum of known sources (Cs-
137, Co-60, Na-22,Co-57,Ba-133)
• The calibration line is linear of the form
E = a*Ch + b
Where: E is the energy of gamma.
Ch is channel related to Energy.
