INSIGHTS FROM AFRICA’S FASTEST GROWING AVIATION BROKERAGE
Anthony was a Rotor Wing pilot who, whilst working in Iran sustained
injuries that resulted in a C5 spinal injury rendering him a quadriplegic.
The AMH Fund Annual Golf Day Fundraiser was held on 03 October at
ERPM Golf Course in Boksburg. This event serves to raise funds ensuring
that Anthony still gets to live a fulfilling, rewarding and enjoyable life. A
large number of pilots and people affiliated to the aviation industry, like
Airborne Insurance, attended the fund raiser and enjoyed a game of golf
while supporting one of their own.
AIRBORNE INSURANCE VISITS
LONDON
Debbie, Jacques and Scott recently went to London to meet with underwriters,
and to specifically understand the stance the War underwriters will be
taking over the next year. Successful discussions were held with our War
underwriters and although War rates will increase it’s going to be on a per
case basis and at renewal.
The directors went to Lloyds and visited the syndicates and spend the
day enjoying some of Lloyd’s history. The market began in Lloyd’s Coffee
House, opened by Edward Lloyd in around 1688 on Tower Street and
the first-ever aviation insurance policy was written by Lloyd’s of London in
1911. The first specialist aviation insurers emerged in 1924. Lloyds is very
secure and one of the preferred markets for Airborne on the larger Aviation
risks and these visits reinforce this.
Q&A SCOTT SMITH:
Scott Smith is the Managing Director at
Airborne Insurance, and has an innovative
vision for the company.
Q. What was your very first job?
A. My first real job once I had completed school
and national service, was as a sales assistant
at Stuttafords, Eastgate. I loved working there;
I found it exciting; I particularly enjoyed getting
to work early and opening the shop doors,
especially during the festive season. I worked my way up to become the
head of the kitchenware department.
Q. How did you enter into your current career in aviation insurance?
A. After spending some time in the UK I returned home and began looking
for employment. Having a family member, my mum, involved in Mission
Aviation meant that aircraft and flying had always been part of my life
growing up. This meant that I was able to interview and obtain a position
at Dennis Jankelow & Associates, as an admin aviation broker. I started in
December 1997 and my journey in aviation insurance continues.
Q. What does your day-to-day role entail?
A. My role has changed a number of times over the last nine years, I initially
did everything! We’ve now grown to 19 employees who are experts in
their fields, I play much more of an overseeing managerial role now. I
concentrate my efforts on negotiating with underwriter’s regards rates,
claims and service, along with looking at strategic planning for the future of
Airborne Insurance.
Q. What is your personal philosophy when it comes to the work you do
and your approach to clients?
A. As a service industry, we are here to provide the very best possible
products and services at the most competitive prices. Should any one of
our clients suffer a loss, we facilitate the payment of the loss in the shortest
time period possible. If clients are satisfied and happy, we consider it a job
well done!
Q. Best advice you’ve ever received?
A. The real meaning of life is to be completely engaged with what you are
doing in the here and now. The future is a concept and doesn’t exist yet. We
are only ever really alive now and we get distracted from living fully now by
having focussing too much on the future. The point of life is always arrived
at in the immediate moment, and this will form your future.
Q. What are the biggest challenges that the business or aviation
insurance industry has faced in recent years and how have these been
overcome?
A. There are always challenges, but to be honest I really can’t think of any
large challenges that the industry has faced in recent years.
Q. What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
A. The people I get to meet and engage with, and the passion we all share
for flying. I still love to close a deal, insure a plane, or create a completely
new product for a client.
Q. What radio station are you tuned to in your car?
A. Classic FM

HELPING WITKOPPEN PRIMARY TO
KEEP HEALTHY
Arbour Week in South Africa is celebrated in September annually, and
this year Airborne Insurance helped Witkoppen Primary School expand
their vegetable garden.
Witkoppen Primary School caters for the children in the Fourways,
Bryanston, Lonehill, Kya Sand, Douglasdale, Diepsloot, Cosmo-City
and Randburg area, and also has classes for learners with disabilities.
Their current vegetable garden ensures that the children receive healthy
nutritional meals at lunch time.
Airborne Insurance partnered with the school for Arbor week and
donated fruit trees to expand their garden. Staff along with some learners
with special needs, got stuck in and planted the peach, avocado and
lemon trees!
