The annual President's Trophy Air Race was held in Bloemfontein, South Africa on the weekend of May 19th. It is one of the most prestigious air races in the world, attracting many competitors who fly a 320 nautical mile course over two days. Airborne Insurance entered a team of two women, Taryn Diedericks and Janice Ray, who flew a Cirrus aircraft. Several of Airborne's clients placed highly in the race as well. Airborne sponsored the event and supported the racers over the three days.

1. The annual President’s Trophy Air Race was held on the weekend of the
19th of May at New Tempe, Bloemfontein. As one of the most prestigious
Air Races in the world, the event is a highlight on the South African
aviation calendar, attracting the largest number of competitors and crews
countrywide. As a handicap race, it allows different Class C1 aircraft with
reciprocating engines to compete against each other. Over the two-day
period each competitor flies a course of approximately 320 nautical miles,
with a minimum cruise speed of 100 knots.
This year, Airborne entered its own ladies team flying the Cirrus, ZS-CTP,
made up of pilot Taryn Diedericks and navigator Janice Ray. Taryn works
in our claims department whilst Janice is one of the company brokers. The
plane is owned by Managing Director Scott Smith and Piet van Blerk of
CDC Aviation, so it really was a team effort!
Congratulations must go out to Airborne’s first clients that crossed the line –
Mark Moses and Glen Bennet flying Beach F33A, ZS-KLY. Other notable
high-fliers included Andries Venter and Chris Hattingh flying a Cessna
T210L, ZS-NUL, Grant Raubenheimer and Vincent Anderes flying a Sling
2, ZU-FRX, and John Sayers and Jack Coetzer flying a Piper PA-24-400,
ZS-DZZ.
Airborne sponsored caps for all the race participants, with the aircraft
registrations embroidered on the back. Our employees were out in force
over the three days, serving Airborne waters and shooters to whomever
were thirsty. All in all, great fun was had by everyone involved, and it was
an honour to have the company represented by Taryn and Janice. Well
done ladies! You did us proud and we look forward to seeing you soar to
even greater heights next year.
