9. Columbia University in partnership with the
Lemann Foundation has launched a program
to select 12 Brazilian entrepreneurs.
The objective of these entrepreneurs was to
develop innovative technological solutions
for 3 challenges of Brazilian education.
I was one of the selected.
11. Then we went to New York to attend an
immersion at Columbia University where we
joined the other 24 students from the
university.
12.
13.
14. So we were divided into groups focused on
developing the solutions. My group was aiming
to work with parent engagement. And in this
way was born EduPais.
16. To describe the problem that we have solved, let's
quickly tell the story of Isabela.
17. Isabella is a fourteen years old girl who
lives in Capão Redondo (São Paulo -
Brazil) and attends the 8th year of
elementary school in a public school in
the neighborhood where she lives.
18. Isabela lives with her mother and a brother.
Her mother is a single mother and works 10
hours a day to provide food for her home.
Isabela's brother is only 6 years old, and it is
Isabela who takes care of him when he is not
in school.
19. Isabella has school performance problems and
according to statistical data, there is a high chance
that Isabela will fail or drop out of school this year.
Isabela does not present any type of biological
problem and there are indications that her poor school
performance is directly related to social issues (quality
of education + parental participation)
20. X 5,000,000
Did you know that in Brazil, there are 5 million cases
similar to Isabela?
21.
22. Did you know that how
parents engage in the
education of their children
directly affects their
children's academic
performance?
23. Fact:
Engaged parents: children with better
academic performance and lower risk of
dropout.
Parents not engaged: children with worse
academic performance at higher risk of
dropout.
24. Stanford University study shows that the EduqMais
(service of engagement of parents via SMS) is five times
more effective than any other solution to improve the
performance of public school students in Brazil than any
another solution.
25. Another study published by Columbia
University last year (2017). It showed that
the sending of messages in weekly automatic
SMS. It increases the frequency by 17% and
reduces the number of disapprovals by 39%.
26. What we do?
We use artificial intelligence to increase
the level of engagement of parents
27. (1) Improvement schools – parents
communication
We send engagement messages adapted to the profile of each
parent
33. (2) Strategic actions
We have identified a student's risk of evading or failing and acted
upon earlier.
34.
35.
36. (3) Teacher training
We use a robot that interacts with teachers and make
recommendations, collect data from this interaction and use this
data
37.
38. 1) People are not interested in knowing about AI,
Machine learning, Big Data,... But they love products that
use these technologies
2) Data collection is a challenge and an opportunity.
3) You can use big data and analytical intelligence to solve
socially relevant problems (never solved before).
