20 My budget does not attempt to solve every problem or address every issue. It reflects the stark reality of what we've inherited, a trillion-dollar deficit, a financial crisis, and a costly
09 recession. Given these realities, everyone in this Chamber, Democrats and Republicans, will have to sacrifice some worthy priorities for which there are no dollars. And that includes
_0 me. But that does not mean we can afford to ignore our long-term challenges. I reject the view that says our problems will simply take care of themselves, that says Government has
30 no role in laying the foundation for our common prosperity.
20
There is, of course, another responsibility we have to our children. And that's the responsibility to ensure that we do not pass on to them a debt they cannot pay. That is critical.
09
[Applause] I agree, absolutely. See, I know we can get some consensus in here. [Laughter] With the deficit we inherited, the cost of the crisis we face, and the long-term challenges
_0
we must meet, it has never been more important to ensure that as our economy recovers, we do what it takes to bring this deficit down. That is critical.

20 Of course, none of these reforms will even happen if we don't also reform how we work with one another. Now, I'm not naive. I never thought that the mere fact of my
10 election would usher in peace and harmony and?[laughter]?some postpartisan era. I knew that both parties have fed divisions that are deeply entrenched. And on some issues, there
_0 are simply philosophical differences that will always cause us to part ways. These disagreements, about the role of government in our lives, about our national priorities and our
67 national security, they've been taking place for over 200 years. They're the very essence of our democracy.
Unfortunately, too many of our citizens have lost faith that our biggest institutions?our corporations, our media, and, yes, our Government?still reflect these same values. Each of these
20
institutions are full of honorable men and women doing important work that helps our country prosper. But each time a CEO rewards himself for failure or a banker puts the rest of
10
us at risk for his own selfish gain, people's doubts grow. Each time lobbyists game the system or politicians tear each other down instead of lifting this country up, we lose faith. The
_0
more that TV pundits reduce serious debates to silly arguments, big issues into sound bites, our citizens turn away. No wonder there's so much cynicism out there. No wonder
85
there's so much disappointment.

11 Tonight let us speak with one voice in reaffirming that our Nation is united in support of our troops and their families. Let us serve them as well as they've served us, by giving
_0 them the equipment they need, by providing them with the care and benefits that they have earned, and by enlisting our veterans in the great task of building our own Nation.

Above all, our freedom endures because of the men and women in uniform who defend it. As they come home, we must serve them as well as they served us. That includes giving
12
them the care and benefits they have earned ? which is why we've increased annual VA spending every year I've been President. And it means enlisting our veterans in the work
_0
of rebuilding our Nation.

All that mattered that day was the mission. No one thought about politics. No one thought about themselves. One of the young men involved in the raid later told me that he
20
didn't deserve credit for the mission. It only succeeded, he said, because every single member of that unit did their job ? the pilot who landed the helicopter that spun out of control;
12
the translator who kept others from entering the compound; the troops who separated the women and children from the fight; the SEALs who charged up the stairs. More than that,
_1 2012(C)Data.CakeBaker 22
the mission only succeeded because every member of that unit trusted each other ? because you can't charge up those stairs, into darkness and danger, unless you know that there's
02
someone behind you, watching your back.
