2. Blockbuster
If you were born before the lately 90’s or early
00’s, it is possible that you still remember
what a Blockbuster was (is?). Going to
blockbuster was a huge experience, choosing
your movie, series, candies, popcorns, with
that 90’s vibe, still one of my most appreciated
memories. For example, the second photo is
the Blockbuster from Puerto Vallarta where I
was born, it was amazing going every weekend
with my family.
3. 2005
2005 was the highest point for Blockbuster.
After this year, the gradual decline started.
4. What happened? As we already know, if a leader
doesn’t innovate or take bad
decisions, will make that the
company have a loss. The issue is
that Netflix offers this idea to
Blockbuster. Blockbuster laugh at
them, and they had chosen to
don’t innovate.
5. Little by little the company started dying. They started disappearing branch
by branch. They tried everything, rebranching, benchmarking, it didn’t
work, it was too late. The only it was keeping them alive was the gaming
area, but it wasn’t enough.
6. Nowadays
Nowadays Netflix is one of the biggest
companies in the whole world. And for
Blockbuster it exist only one open in
the whole world. The last Blockbuster
is located in Bend, Oregon, USA as a
reminder that a leader needs to adapt
and listen new ideas.
7. The leaders or employees in Blockbuster did not have empowerment, this is a
process with a structure, they do not question if the situation is good? Do we
need to make changes? So they do not action correctly, so the end of the
company started.

8. Also, the personality and values of the headquarters can highly affect with
every decision they take, so with this already said we can mention too that the
company leaders had chosen a valuable structure of conformity and tradition.
This doesn’t mean that always have a tradition is something wrong, but in this
case, the innovative idea killed Blockbuster.
9. What have we learn?
Being a leader requires making decisions that can affect the whole company. Not
having vision or adaptability to innovate can cause that the solution you give is not
as good as your competitors give. Nowadays Blockbuster still alive in our
memories, a serie or as a nostalgic airbnb.
