1. Crowe Horwath Learn2Lead Externship
1405 N 5th Ave, St. Charles, IL 60174
June 28, 2014-June 29,2014
2. Getting Started With it
• Jumped at the chance to be one of the few
student applicants selected
• Excited and nervous that I was the only one
from The University of Akron who was
chosen for that 2014 Summer program
• Could not stop thinking about what I
was going to gain from the experience
and what the event was going to be like
• Excited to meet new Crowe managers
and reconnect with people I knew
3. What I Planned to Gain from It
• To get to know new people in my major but with different and similar areas of
accounting interests from different universities across the nation
• New leadership skills in learning how to communicate with other people and
to be able to lead by example
• To understand the true purpose of my role as a future accountant and what I
am capable of doing
• To enhance my skills to not only be a more effective team player, but to also
be a more influential leader and bring out the best in myself for others
• To learn how to be myself in activity engagement while behaving in a
professional manner at the same time
4. What I Did There-Activities
• Broke into teams and completed various competitions such as trivia, egg
walks, magic tricks, and relay races
• Played several sport activities with other student extern members and
practiced introductions and elevator speeches with them
• Engaged in former activities such as being artistic and practicing to
create my own brand image and what it means to set myself apart
• Answered prize questions from senior managers, recruiters, and firm
partners and got to understand what their backgrounds were
• Listened to and watched formal presentations from managers and
partners from the different firm office divisions
5. New Skills I Learned/Mastered
• How to communicate with others more effectively and get a team going in
the direction that it needs to
• To be a follower and a leader almost simultaneously, valuing other people’s
effort/inputs while coming up with my own solutions as well
• How to find the best in myself and to learn what makes me unique to set
myself apart from others, knowing what a person’s brand image is
• Interpersonal relationship skills and professional manner communication
with fellow externs and professional staff from Crowe Horwath
• Learning the ethical and professional principles of public accounting and
what my colleagues and I stand for as members within the accounting field
6. What I Enjoyed About it and Why
• Gained the opportunity to meet people not only from other universities
across Ohio, but from across the country and world as well
• Gained some valuable leadership skills that I was able to take with me
and plan to continue applying throughout my career
• Helped me to work with and for other people when it comes to teamwork
and to do it in ways I never even thought of before
• Got to understand that performance outside and being active was just as
important for accountants as inside work was
• Got the chance to get away, travel, and gain a valuable developing
experience to write home about all in all
• Inspired to continue working hard learning that all attendees were
nationally ranked according to academics and activity involvement
7. Overall Experience Conclusion
• One of the best enjoyable experiences I have
had throughout my life
• Came away feeling that I received the chance
to have fun, be myself, and show Crowe’s
staff who I was/am at the same time
• Had the most to eat there than I ever had
pretty much anywhere else in my life
• Gave me the desire to want to do something
like this sometime again in the future
• Happy to meet new people of different
backgrounds and skillsets
