Knowing where we are and where we're headed is crucial to goal pursuit. But we can
only achieve true perspective if we acknowledge where and what we've come from.
History, tradition and
personal journey
Last week, I celebrated a milestone birthday.
A couple of days later at my birthday family gathering, I
was then given the original telegram that announced my
birth to my grandfather who, at that time, was yet to get
a phone installed.
And also among my gifts, I got tickets to one of the final
games for West Ham (I'm a fan; as is my father, both my
grandfathers, all my uncles … and so on) at The Boleyn
Ground: the home of the Hammers since 1904 - but no
more when they complete their move to the Olympic
Stadium this summer.
And so these past few days, I've been all about history
and tradition and personal journey. And it's been really
useful thinking. But how often do we really reflect in such
terms?
Q. How often do we stop and acknowledge
just how far we've come?
Conducting a productive
retrospective
When working to achieve goals and progress plans, it's
really important to know where we are and where we're
headed. But when that's the sole focus, it can quickly turn
to overwhelm: with everything that's yet to do. We lose
sight of how far we've already come.
To help keep a healthy perspective, stop for a moment
and acknowledge your journey. Make your retrospective
as productive as possible by asking:
1. What do you want to acknowledge yourself for?
2. What recent achievements have you been
forgetting and overlooking?
3. Which of your achievements are you most proud of?
4. What is most different for you now?
5. Where will you go next with this?
Stop and acknowledge just how far you've come. You've
probably done a lot more than you think you have.
