Visual notes are graphic outlines that help us record and learn new information. According to Mike Rohde, author of one of the most well-known handbooks in this area, sketchnotes are a form of visual note-taking that aims to capture big ideas using a combination of text, images and other graphic elements.

I often describe Graphic Recording as being similar to translating. It’s translating words into pictures. Concepts into metaphors. Ideas into maps and illustrations. I had never really considered though… What happens when you try to translate it back?

University of Washington biologist John Medina has done extensive research into persuasion and how the brain processes information. His advice is to burn most PowerPoint decks and start over with fewer words and more pictures. According to his book, Brain Rules, "We are incredible at remembering pictures. Hear a piece of information, and three days later you'll remember 10 percent of it. Add a picture and you'll remember 65 percent."

Human beings are incredible at remembering pictures. Hear a piece of information, and three days later you’ll remember 10% of it. Add a picture and you’ll remember 65%. A study conducted at the Wharton School of Business found that 50% of the audience were persuaded by a purely verbal presentation, while 67% were persuaded by the verbal presentation that had accompanying visuals.
