1. A Helping Hand
Design for Change Competition
Lohia’s Little Angels High School
Aghapura, Hyderabad, AP
2. Students brainstormed about the things they would like to change in
their communities.
They were especially concerned with the homeless population in
Hyderabad and the lack of available shelter and clothing for them in
the city.
After much discussion, the students decided that they wanted to do
their part to help the homeless of Hyderabad.
3. Students recognized that they had a daunting task ahead of them to
reach so many of the less fortunate but they were very motivated to
try.
The first step was to imagine what life was like for someone without
a home in the city. The students contemplated this and then
discussed what the most immediate needs of the poor were in the
city.
They decided that having a roof over their heads and clothing would
be impactful and something the students could possibly help with.
Students also wanted to reach out to the government to provide a
longer lasting solution to the problem, especially since regulations of
the Supreme Court were not being followed in the city.
4. The students started
a letter writing
campaign where all
8th standard
students wrote and
submitted letters to
the Chief Minister of
Andhra Pradesh
requesting that the
city comply with
Supreme Court
regulations and
build more homeless
shelters.
5. The students also participated in a clothing drive, where they went
and asked their family, neighbors and friends to donate old, usable
clothing to the Aashayein Foundation locally in Hyderabad.
They ended up collecting over fifty articles of clothing.
6. At the end of the week, students were much more aware of the
plight of the less fortunate in the city and of the impact they
could have.
The Aashayein Foundation was very greatful for the donation and
were able to distribute many of the clothes to the poor in the
city right away.
