Essay On Conflict In Short Stories
The conflict is one of the main components of the short story. It gives us two elements thrill and attractions. Heroes of the short story Can develop
certain types of conflict in all parts of the short story. Such conflicts may be with the hostile elements or with other characters in the story. There are
certain types of conflict and each type has its own function. The first type is the internal conflict caused by some of the ideas and beliefs that are
within the parties to the conflict. The second type is an external conflict, resulting from external forces that affect one way or the other in the
protagonist. In these 3 stories there are different types of conflict by referring to the short stories are: "Letter from Gaza", "After twenty years," and
"Scarlet ibis.

External conflict is associated with for a long time that the two close friends Jimmy and Bob did not meet each other. Time and life have changed
everything, even the close friends had completely changed. Each one found his way. One became a policeman who seeks to achieve justice and
the other become a criminal threatening justice. Physical appearance of the two men has completely changed that it was impossible for them to
know each other when they meet as promised after a period of twenty years. "I was at the appointed place on time. When you struck the match to
light your cigar I saw it was the face of the man wanted in Chicago ". Jimmy tells his friend Bob that he did not recognize his face when he was
trying to ignite his cigar. This moment only knows that he is a criminal wanted by the police. The other type of conflict is experienced in this story is
an internal one. Jimmy the cop was in a very embarrassing position since it was forced to arrest the criminal who turned out to be his close friend had

Short Story
A tall, thin looking girl emerged at the top of the stairway. She had a face as pale as milk with a scruffy mop of long curly ginger hair flowing down
around it. She had a look of deep sadness on her face but still seemed to have a warm essence about her.
Samantha ambled slowly down the dusty stairway humming to herself along the way. She was one of those people who was always stringing words
together to make tunes, this was her one escape from reality, well that and long walks along the quarry side on Thursday afternoons.
She moved slowly and gracefully through the hallway and into the dinning room.
"Samantha Jane Smith, you're late again! Well what have you got to say...show more content...
More wrong than you can ever imagine. Do you really believe that there is a place for every unwanted child, and that they are treated well in
children's homes. The children there are feed and given a bed to sleep in and that's all. I will leave it to you to decide whether this right or wrong, but
either way there is always one child who is picked on, in this case Samantha
Heinshore was the children's home that Samantha was in. It was as black and dark as night. It was one of those houses you only ever see in horror
or ghost films on T.V. and like they are made out in such programs they are cold, creepy and very dark and unsettling. No place for children.
"Baby, baby, baby....." Samantha turned and ran, tears flooding down herface. She could hear the chanting behind her as it faded out the further up the
stairs she got. Into her room she ran and locked the door.
Her room was dark and cold. It had bare floorboards that were roughly sanded making splinters a regular occurrence. She struck a match which was
instantly extinguished by a blast of cold air which had come through the open window. Samantha spun round, her skin on the floor and her head
touching the roof. She was not alone, heavy breathing could be heard from the far end of the room. Samantha squinted into

An Immigrant: A Short Story
Well, today is the day! After two years of me wiping tears and sheltering hearts, my soldiers get the opportunity to be in the presence of their father
(cue fireworks and marching band). YAY (hint of sarcasm)! For me though, this is a time filled with mixed emotions. This is a day, I'm almost certain,
that many single parents who lack the physical presence of the other low–keyed parent will cringe at. I see the sheer excitement, via Skype from
America, as they give me a day by day countdown. Seeing them count how many sleeps they have until their father arrives partially warms my heart. I
see their innocence as if they had never faced disappointment handed to them by him in the past. It would be ludicrous not to mention that this is total
dГ©jГ vu for me. I do not possess such an innocent and forgiving heart as they. Exactly one summer ago,...show more content...
What if he decides to fill their heads with lies regarding his absence in their lives? What if he interrogates them about my life and decisions? I refuse
to be one of those parents that coaches or censors their children. If he chooses to ask them questions about mommy's life, I am more than certain he
will get an innocent open and honest response. Responses which may or may not be to his liking. Maybe my feelings are unfounded and selfish.
Regardless, I have to put my feelings, opinions and moments of dГ©jГ vu aside. I know I can't be the only single parent that has ever faced this or
feels this way. I always strive to be the most optimal being I can be. In the same sense, I must acknowledge that I am a constant work in progress.
Forgiving is a constant struggle which I take to my knees in prayer and my heart has yet to allow forgetting to be an option. Only time will tell
though. Until then I can only remain positive and prayerful that this is a new beginning of him being proactive in their lives. I guess I have to
implement my Let Go and Let God mentality on this

Poem Vs Short Story
The essential difference between a poem and a short story is the difference of scope. So, poems are short and they, briefly, tell you how the author is
feeling about in a few words, while short stories could be written by the author at any moment with a plot, themes, character development, setting etc.
The play "Naked Lunch" by Michael Hollinger is about a man named Vernon and a female named Lucy. They used to be a couple but they are no
longer together. When they were sitting down to eat, Vernon started asking her the reasons of why she did not want to eat steak. He was making a big
problem of it. Vernon finally ends up making Lucy eat the steak by yelling at her. Consequently, she ate the steak because she was scared.
A play can be long or short, it all depends on what the author wants to transmit to his or her audience. The time is essentially important. In a play the
characters need to talk each other to have an act; on the other hand, in short stories the narrator explains the situation, he is the one making and telling
us the story.
Most good stories start with a fundamental characteristics: the initial situation, the conflict, the climax, suspense, and conclusion. In "Girl" by Jamaica
Kincaid, the story does not seems to be real since it...show more content...
A short story has characters, a main idea (the plot), the conflict of the story. They both have an emotional respond from the reader. In "I could not stop
for Death" by Emily Dickinson, the author gives us a clue of what the poem will be about at the beginning. This makes it easier to understand; how the
author begins it differences him from others. As in "Naked Lunch" by Michael Hollinger; I honestly thought that this couple would get back together
since they were having diner, but eventually it ended up in an unexpected way. It was not the ending I expected honestly. Dickinson in the poetry
focuses too much on death. It tells us that death can come to us when you least expect

Short Story The sudden, severe storm caught me totally unaware. I was walking down Peppers Road when the dark clouds started to build. I looked
around as I huddled under a large, dead oak tree which offered me little or no protection from the razor–sharp rain. Almost all of the houses on this
abandoned street were too badly damaged for me to take shelter in, except for one. The house loomed impressive and morbid in the greenish–black sky.
A flash of lightning briefly illuminated the house and I saw that the windows were broken, but the structure seemed sound. I started to think what I
should do; my options were to either stay under this great dead oak tree risking getting hit by lightning...show more content...
There was a crash from upstairs. My heart began to race. Who was it? What was it? I could only hear my heart as I listened for another sound. The
silence throbbed in my ears; I stood at the bottom of the staircase. The sounds had come from upstairs. My curiosity and swallowed my fears and
nervously ascended the battered and dilapidated stairs, not knowing what I was going to encounter. On the second floor I found a bathroom furnished
in an old murky green with scale on it, I left it undisturbed as the floor looked unsafe. I found several bedrooms laden with cloth–covered antiques,
clothes that might have been beautiful at one time, and tarnished jewellery. The walls and floor where all wooden, they were illuminated by the
constant stream of lightning flashes that came through the stained window that towered over me. At the end of the second floor, I found yet
another stair well. This one was dark and coated with lacy spider webs. It led to what must have been the children's floor at one point. There was a
play room that took up most of the space, along with two bedrooms with dainty furniture, and the nurse's room. What I mistook for a closet at first
was really a narrow flight of stairs that lead into the attic. A giant rat scampered across my feet. Its beady eyes glowed red in the flicker of my lighter.
It hissed at me. I

Original Writing: Short Story
It was the night of the year that few children can sleep. The night when everyone hopes that snow will fall and they will wake up to a garden of
glistening diamonds grown by the morning sun. It was Christmas Eve.
As many had hoped, snow was falling. It slowly covered the houses and streets in a thick blanket. The moon shone her silver light down on the
white world, and but for one, there was nobody to view the kind of beauty that things such as love and dreams are made of. The only one there to see
the spectacle was a small boy of five, or six years.
This little boy possessed a beauty not of this earth, a beauty that surpassed even all that surrounded him. His...show more content...
On the night that every other child wished for toys, and puppies, this little boy wished for love. And nothing more.
Finally, the little boy came to a stop, not wanting to ever take another step again. He raised his downcast eyes, and in front of him stood a church.
He remembered that he had been to church before, and the building that loomed above him stirred vague memories. The boy made himself stumble
a few more steps, and pressed his face to the glass door he had arrived at. He looked in, and saw the church was lit up inside. There was light coming
from behind a man on a big cross, and two huge Christmas trees shone in heavenly splendor. Looking at the man on the cross, he had a faint
recollection. He half–remembered, a long time ago, that someone reading from a big book had said that the man on the cross would come on
Christmas. That he came every Christmas.
The little boy supposed that if anyone would help him, it would be the man inside. He loved everyone. So, the little boy laid down in front of the
church, and as he slipped off into sleep, a glimmer of hope, that the man would come and save him from the cold and loneliness, warmed his heart.
The snow continued to fall, and bells jingled far in the distance. Presents were laid under trees, and visions of sugar plums danced in most children's
heads. But not the little boy who slept on the church steps under the winter

In the woods when the sun was just starting to set, there was a van driving on a long–abandoned road, behind the wheel of said van was a tired looking
girl who seemed to be about 19. She took a sip of the long cold coffee, and turned to the turquoise haired girl sitting next to her.
"Hey uhhhh Cas, Cassie? Where are we?" Noting the headphones, she stopped the car and turned around to inquire of the two boys in the back,
"Kenny, Timmy, do either of you have an idea where we are? It seems like we've been driving for like 20 hours and we still haven't found the place."
The two looked up at their friend.

on either side of the door, both dead, and the bushes that lined the house were wild and unruly.
Alice approached the door with caution, looking to the others
"Are you ready to hopefully find a ghost?"
They all shouted yes, excited at the prospect of finding what they had been searching for all summer.
"We're like the mystery gang, except, we don't have a talking dog" Cassie added.
Timmy turned around "Hey! Sock the 4th is a valuable part of this team."
"Valuable is not a word I would use to describe a guinea pig." Kenny said, while walking over to the door, pulling out his lock picking kit, and pausing
to look at Timmy. "Wait the 4th, you killed another one?"
"Yes, well you would have known that if you had attended the funeral, you heartless monster."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever, I'm busy." Kenny paused and put away his supplies. "That's strange, the door is already unlocked. Huh." He then opened the
door to demonstrate.
Alice looked kind of confused but then shook her head "Okay weird, but on the bright side, less work." She then walked into the house and motioned
for the others to come in with her. "Guys its supper dark, Timmy

It was lying there, the battered and torn body. There was a moment of silence as detective David Whittle and I stared at the body. I could not
understand how this had occurred.
It had been a fairly quiet day at the station until I had received a phone call from a distressed mother, pleading for us to help. Her voice was hard to
understand as she was crying so hard. I traced the call to a small village just on the edge of Brighton, called Linden where a Miss Hutton lived. I

screamed! I had not any idea that my daughter had just been murdered".
"Murdered you say".
She was still sulking as she said yes
"Did you see the murderer?" I asked.
She did not reply but just broke down in tears. Immediately our attention was drawn to the skid marks we had seen on our entry to the house. We
examined them and David, being a vehicle expert recognised that they had been left by a transit van. The name Gary popped into mind when he said
transit van as he had been known to speed around the local village, and I have arrested him on many occasions. He was a short black haired chubby
man who had a distinctive scar down the left side of his face. He always wore jeans that were ripped at the bottom, and he had small brown boots. He
was in his middle thirties and was not married.
David and I sat in our car and decided to ring the police station and tell them to look for the name Gary Myers in the police record books. Surely
enough when they looked they said that he has been in and out of the local police station

Short Story Of Short Stories
One thing that's great about short stories is how quickly they can ruin your life. Maybe you start reading one over your lunch break and, if it's the right
one, before that peanut butter cup you brought for dessert even has a chance to finish its melting shape–shift into some kind of sugary cement, the
whole world has been destroyed around you and then rebuilt, and nothing is quite the same again. This happens whether you like it or not. Great
stories practice this violent beauty on you in a variety of ways: some by making an absurd world familiar (or vice versa), some with a slow burn,
some with a voice that colonizes your thoughts. Some do it quietly, almost without you even noticing, and some do it with high wire acts of
imagination or intellect that make you into a breathless witness. The trick, then, is finding the right story, one that is capable of such a thing. This
is no easy task. Tastes differ, of course, and it can be confusing to spot the small boat of a great story on the wide sea of fiction. What any reader
can offer you in terms of guidance is actually the same thing that any good writer can offer you with the story itself: a way of saying, This is what
moved me and made me feel strange and alive in some way; here, why don't you give it a try? In that spirit and in no particular order, here are ten
short stories you might've missed that ambushed me with their odd wonder: 1."The Zero Meter Diving Team" by Jim Shepard (BOMB Magazine)

How To Write A Short Story: What's Up, Gilroy?
As they tread along, Luke noticed a strange, strange occurrence: while he was looking down at the ground, he saw an ankle–high wind stroke all about
the surface of the ground. Out of the tree line on his right, birds, birds of all kinds, and thousands of them, flew out and darted up into the sky. It was
a frenzied exodus. No one said a word–just looked as they remained froze there. Luke's ears popped, but he felt the pressure in them begin to build

forest. Like the sound of a volcano erupting. The shock wave leaned the trees over like they were rubber sticks. The sound of the blowing leaves was a
tempestuous one. The wind force knocked them all to ground like they were a sand bag. That fast there was peace. When Luke looked up into the sky

What Makes a Good Short Story
What Makes a Good Short Story and How Successful is R.K. Narayan in Portraying the Character of Swami in the Short Story 'A Hero'?
Nadine Gordimer – 'Short story writers see by the light of the flash; theirs is the art of the only thing we can be sure of – the present moment.' This is
a quote from short story writer Nadine Gordimer; referring to how the art of short story writing is to get straight to the point and write everything as it
is. This is an art and those who cannot perfect it should admire it instead.

This is an example of changing the reader's emotions in a matter of a few seconds and it has a positive effect on the feelings towards the story.
The story has to have a fast pace to it, meaning that there are no slow starts or moments of the book where the reader can put it down. This means
that there should be something humourous, exciting or out of the ordinary that will keep the reader gripping the book and hoping that the story will
never end. R.K. Narayan uses irony cleverly in his short story to keep up the fast pace and to keep the reader smiling.
The best example of irony R.K. Narayan uses is the actual title of his short story, 'A Hero'. This is due to the fact that throughout the story there are
two examples of boys who are not heroes, but are quite hilariously the opposite: cowards. At the start of the story Swami's father reads to him an
article from his newspaper, reading 'News is to hand of the bravery of a village lad who, while returning home by the jungle path, came face to
face with a tiger' and then the article goes on to describe the fight the boy endured with the tiger and his flight up a tree, where he stayed for half a
day till some people came that way and killed the tiger. This boy was by no means a hero, but a coward who just survived his encounter with a tiger
by climbing up a tree and with luck some people came along, who managed to kill the tiger. The second example of his not–so–much 'a hero'

Examples Of Conflict In Short Stories
TMA

The short story and Essay writing
Short stories are mainly written to grab the reader's attention and thus make them reflect and become drawn into the story even more. So why is a
short story important? They are important and effective due to the fact that any reader can relate to the story or a particular character as they can be
universal. In this TMA I will be tracing the elements of conflicts within the three short stories. These conflicts will consist of man vs man, man vs
society and man vs nature. Furthermore, I will talk about the internal and external conflicts in the stories in the following paragraphs.
There are many different types of conflicts within the short stories such as the man vs man in...show more content...

Growing Up : A Short Story

After being taken out of foster care, my grandparents were granted temporary custody of us until my father arrived home from the navy. Within the first

Short Story Endings In Short Stories
Closure and Endings found in Short Stories Every story must start somewhere, but not every story has to have a complete ending, or even a clear
one. With the development of the short story, the variation between short story endings has gradually increased as time has gone on, like the
difference between a final ending in Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" or John Cheever's "The Swimmer." However, the endings of
some short stories also depend on the style of how the story is written, like Amy Tan's "Two Kinds," which is a part of a larger novel, and Kate
Chopin's "The Blind Man," which is a new branch of short fiction writing called microfiction. The ending also comes about based on the subject matter
found in the story. For example, Tan is a second–generation Chinese–American like her character, June, in "Two Kinds." Cheever lived through the
Great Depression, and his family went through a similar fall from grace like his character Neddy did in "The Swimmer." They say to write what you
know, and these authors come to their endings through their own experiences and the type of style that they write in. Flannery O'Connor was a writer
on rented time. Confined to her house throughout the final days of her illness, critics theorize that she spent a good amount of time thinking about how
her life was coming to a close. Andre Bleikasten, author of "Beginnings and Endings in Flannery O'Connor," believes that the reason why many of her
stories end with such a finality

Types of Conflicts in Short Stories
Short story writing literature is a very important art and has been around for long time. Every short story will consist of five different elements.
These are as follows: Setting, Plot, Character, Point of View and Theme. In this essay, we are going to discuss three of these stories and try to look at
them from different perspectives. We will be considering the elements of the stories and how the writers expressed that. We are going to discuss the
different phases and changes that each character in these three different stories from the beginning until the end with some highlight on the events and
conflicts that lead to these changes. We will start with "A Letter from Gaza" by Ghassan Kanafani, then "After Twenty Years" by O. Henry and last
will be "The Scarlet Ibis" by J. Hurst. I will give a summarizing overall conclusion at the end of this essay.
Conflict is a major component within the plot element of a story and moves the events. It is about the struggle that characters face to lead them...show

This is a story told by the elder brother about his disabled younger brother. It is about being ashamed about it that drives him to force the little
brother to become better or else more normal. When the brother said "..Renaming my brother was probably the kindest thing I ever did for him.."
maybe that was not completely true. He taught Doodle to stand and walk. He even wanted him to run, swim and climb tree just like normal kids.
But all of this was not only because he really loved him and wanted him to be normal. It was also because he was ashamed to pull him in the cart or
to have a disabled little brother who cannot even do normal kids activities even though it was a really toughing moment when he walked in front of
his parents the first time. "..They didn't know that I did it just for myself, that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled

Essay On Conflict In Short Stories

  • 1. Essay On Conflict In Short Stories The conflict is one of the main components of the short story. It gives us two elements thrill and attractions. Heroes of the short story Can develop certain types of conflict in all parts of the short story. Such conflicts may be with the hostile elements or with other characters in the story. There are certain types of conflict and each type has its own function. The first type is the internal conflict caused by some of the ideas and beliefs that are within the parties to the conflict. The second type is an external conflict, resulting from external forces that affect one way or the other in the protagonist. In these 3 stories there are different types of conflict by referring to the short stories are: "Letter from Gaza", "After twenty years," and "Scarlet ibis. The first story, a "Letter from Gaza". Here...show more content... External conflict is associated with for a long time that the two close friends Jimmy and Bob did not meet each other. Time and life have changed everything, even the close friends had completely changed. Each one found his way. One became a policeman who seeks to achieve justice and the other become a criminal threatening justice. Physical appearance of the two men has completely changed that it was impossible for them to know each other when they meet as promised after a period of twenty years. "I was at the appointed place on time. When you struck the match to light your cigar I saw it was the face of the man wanted in Chicago ". Jimmy tells his friend Bob that he did not recognize his face when he was trying to ignite his cigar. This moment only knows that he is a criminal wanted by the police. The other type of conflict is experienced in this story is an internal one. Jimmy the cop was in a very embarrassing position since it was forced to arrest the criminal who turned out to be his close friend had not been for twenty Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Short Story Essay example Short Story A tall, thin looking girl emerged at the top of the stairway. She had a face as pale as milk with a scruffy mop of long curly ginger hair flowing down around it. She had a look of deep sadness on her face but still seemed to have a warm essence about her. Samantha ambled slowly down the dusty stairway humming to herself along the way. She was one of those people who was always stringing words together to make tunes, this was her one escape from reality, well that and long walks along the quarry side on Thursday afternoons. She moved slowly and gracefully through the hallway and into the dinning room. "Samantha Jane Smith, you're late again! Well what have you got to say...show more content... More wrong than you can ever imagine. Do you really believe that there is a place for every unwanted child, and that they are treated well in children's homes. The children there are feed and given a bed to sleep in and that's all. I will leave it to you to decide whether this right or wrong, but either way there is always one child who is picked on, in this case Samantha Heinshore was the children's home that Samantha was in. It was as black and dark as night. It was one of those houses you only ever see in horror or ghost films on T.V. and like they are made out in such programs they are cold, creepy and very dark and unsettling. No place for children. "Baby, baby, baby....." Samantha turned and ran, tears flooding down herface. She could hear the chanting behind her as it faded out the further up the stairs she got. Into her room she ran and locked the door. Her room was dark and cold. It had bare floorboards that were roughly sanded making splinters a regular occurrence. She struck a match which was instantly extinguished by a blast of cold air which had come through the open window. Samantha spun round, her skin on the floor and her head touching the roof. She was not alone, heavy breathing could be heard from the far end of the room. Samantha squinted into

  • 4. An Immigrant: A Short Story Well, today is the day! After two years of me wiping tears and sheltering hearts, my soldiers get the opportunity to be in the presence of their father (cue fireworks and marching band). YAY (hint of sarcasm)! For me though, this is a time filled with mixed emotions. This is a day, I'm almost certain, that many single parents who lack the physical presence of the other low–keyed parent will cringe at. I see the sheer excitement, via Skype from America, as they give me a day by day countdown. Seeing them count how many sleeps they have until their father arrives partially warms my heart. I see their innocence as if they had never faced disappointment handed to them by him in the past. It would be ludicrous not to mention that this is total dГ©jГ vu for me. I do not possess such an innocent and forgiving heart as they. Exactly one summer ago,...show more content... What if he decides to fill their heads with lies regarding his absence in their lives? What if he interrogates them about my life and decisions? I refuse to be one of those parents that coaches or censors their children. If he chooses to ask them questions about mommy's life, I am more than certain he will get an innocent open and honest response. Responses which may or may not be to his liking. Maybe my feelings are unfounded and selfish. Regardless, I have to put my feelings, opinions and moments of dГ©jГ vu aside. I know I can't be the only single parent that has ever faced this or feels this way. I always strive to be the most optimal being I can be. In the same sense, I must acknowledge that I am a constant work in progress. Forgiving is a constant struggle which I take to my knees in prayer and my heart has yet to allow forgetting to be an option. Only time will tell though. Until then I can only remain positive and prayerful that this is a new beginning of him being proactive in their lives. I guess I have to implement my Let Go and Let God mentality on this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Poem Vs Short Story The essential difference between a poem and a short story is the difference of scope. So, poems are short and they, briefly, tell you how the author is feeling about in a few words, while short stories could be written by the author at any moment with a plot, themes, character development, setting etc. The play "Naked Lunch" by Michael Hollinger is about a man named Vernon and a female named Lucy. They used to be a couple but they are no longer together. When they were sitting down to eat, Vernon started asking her the reasons of why she did not want to eat steak. He was making a big problem of it. Vernon finally ends up making Lucy eat the steak by yelling at her. Consequently, she ate the steak because she was scared. A play can be long or short, it all depends on what the author wants to transmit to his or her audience. The time is essentially important. In a play the characters need to talk each other to have an act; on the other hand, in short stories the narrator explains the situation, he is the one making and telling us the story. Most good stories start with a fundamental characteristics: the initial situation, the conflict, the climax, suspense, and conclusion. In "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid, the story does not seems to be real since it...show more content... A short story has characters, a main idea (the plot), the conflict of the story. They both have an emotional respond from the reader. In "I could not stop for Death" by Emily Dickinson, the author gives us a clue of what the poem will be about at the beginning. This makes it easier to understand; how the author begins it differences him from others. As in "Naked Lunch" by Michael Hollinger; I honestly thought that this couple would get back together since they were having diner, but eventually it ended up in an unexpected way. It was not the ending I expected honestly. Dickinson in the poetry focuses too much on death. It tells us that death can come to us when you least expect Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay about Short Story Short Story The sudden, severe storm caught me totally unaware. I was walking down Peppers Road when the dark clouds started to build. I looked around as I huddled under a large, dead oak tree which offered me little or no protection from the razor–sharp rain. Almost all of the houses on this abandoned street were too badly damaged for me to take shelter in, except for one. The house loomed impressive and morbid in the greenish–black sky. A flash of lightning briefly illuminated the house and I saw that the windows were broken, but the structure seemed sound. I started to think what I should do; my options were to either stay under this great dead oak tree risking getting hit by lightning...show more content... There was a crash from upstairs. My heart began to race. Who was it? What was it? I could only hear my heart as I listened for another sound. The silence throbbed in my ears; I stood at the bottom of the staircase. The sounds had come from upstairs. My curiosity and swallowed my fears and nervously ascended the battered and dilapidated stairs, not knowing what I was going to encounter. On the second floor I found a bathroom furnished in an old murky green with scale on it, I left it undisturbed as the floor looked unsafe. I found several bedrooms laden with cloth–covered antiques, clothes that might have been beautiful at one time, and tarnished jewellery. The walls and floor where all wooden, they were illuminated by the constant stream of lightning flashes that came through the stained window that towered over me. At the end of the second floor, I found yet another stair well. This one was dark and coated with lacy spider webs. It led to what must have been the children's floor at one point. There was a play room that took up most of the space, along with two bedrooms with dainty furniture, and the nurse's room. What I mistook for a closet at first was really a narrow flight of stairs that lead into the attic. A giant rat scampered across my feet. Its beady eyes glowed red in the flicker of my lighter. It hissed at me. I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Essay on Original Writing: Short Story Original Writing: Short Story It was the night of the year that few children can sleep. The night when everyone hopes that snow will fall and they will wake up to a garden of glistening diamonds grown by the morning sun. It was Christmas Eve. As many had hoped, snow was falling. It slowly covered the houses and streets in a thick blanket. The moon shone her silver light down on the white world, and but for one, there was nobody to view the kind of beauty that things such as love and dreams are made of. The only one there to see the spectacle was a small boy of five, or six years. The boy made himself stumble a few more steps, and pressed his face to the glass door he had arrived at. He looked in, and saw the church was lit up inside. There was light coming from behind a man on a big cross, and two huge Christmas trees shone in heavenly splendor. Looking at the man on the cross, he had a faint recollection. He half–remembered, a long time ago, that someone reading from a big book had said that the man on the cross would come on Christmas. That he came every Christmas. The little boy supposed that if anyone would help him, it would be the man inside. He loved everyone. So, the little boy laid down in front of the church, and as he slipped off into sleep, a glimmer of hope, that the man would come and save him from the cold and loneliness, warmed his heart. The snow continued to fall, and bells jingled far in the distance. Presents were laid under trees, and visions of sugar plums danced in most children's heads. But not the little boy who slept on the church steps under the winter

Short Story : Creative Writing In the woods when the sun was just starting to set, there was a van driving on a long–abandoned road, behind the wheel of said van was a tired looking girl who seemed to be about 19. She took a sip of the long cold coffee, and turned to the turquoise haired girl sitting next to her. "Hey uhhhh Cas, Cassie? Where are we?" Noting the headphones, she stopped the car and turned around to inquire of the two boys in the back, "Kenny, Timmy, do either of you have an idea where we are? It seems like we've been driving for like 20 hours and we still haven't found the place." The two looked up at their friend. "Um yeah, I don't know either, there's no signal, I can't pull up google maps." Timmy said then went back to his comic book. The other...show more content... The mansion was covered in vines, and the bricks that composed the walls looked to be a faded pink. There were four pillars supporting the balcony above the porch, all had been chipped at some point in their existence with the inner left pillar looking the worst. There were two potted plants that sat on either side of the door, both dead, and the bushes that lined the house were wild and unruly. Alice approached the door with caution, looking to the others "Are you ready to hopefully find a ghost?" They all shouted yes, excited at the prospect of finding what they had been searching for all summer. "We're like the mystery gang, except, we don't have a talking dog" Cassie added. Timmy turned around "Hey! Sock the 4th is a valuable part of this team." "Valuable is not a word I would use to describe a guinea pig." Kenny said, while walking over to the door, pulling out his lock picking kit, and pausing to look at Timmy. "Wait the 4th, you killed another one?" "Yes, well you would have known that if you had attended the funeral, you heartless monster." "Yeah, yeah, whatever, I'm busy." Kenny paused and put away his supplies. "That's strange, the door is already unlocked. Huh." He then opened the door to demonstrate. Alice looked kind of confused but then shook her head "Okay weird, but on the bright side, less work." • 10. Essay about Short Story Short Story It was lying there, the battered and torn body. There was a moment of silence as detective David Whittle and I stared at the body. I could not understand how this had occurred. It had been a fairly quiet day at the station until I had received a phone call from a distressed mother, pleading for us to help. Her voice was hard to understand as she was crying so hard. I traced the call to a small village just on the edge of Brighton, called Linden where a Miss Hutton lived. I had visited Linden before as one of my old friends lived there. It was a quiet little town, which had nothing special about it. It was not far by car but I was confused as to why we were going there, as the...show more content... "What happened?" I asked. She said that it had been an ordinary day up until about three o clock when she heard noise coming from upstairs. "Well it was just then that I realised that there were more people than just my daughter Victoria upstairs. There was a loud crashing sound and she screamed! I had not any idea that my daughter had just been murdered". "Murdered you say". She was still sulking as she said yes "Did you see the murderer?" I asked. She did not reply but just broke down in tears. Immediately our attention was drawn to the skid marks we had seen on our entry to the house. We examined them and David, being a vehicle expert recognised that they had been left by a transit van. The name Gary popped into mind when he said transit van as he had been known to speed around the local village, and I have arrested him on many occasions. He was a short black haired chubby man who had a distinctive scar down the left side of his face. He always wore jeans that were ripped at the bottom, and he had small brown boots. He

  • 12. Short Story Of Short Stories One thing that's great about short stories is how quickly they can ruin your life. Maybe you start reading one over your lunch break and, if it's the right one, before that peanut butter cup you brought for dessert even has a chance to finish its melting shape–shift into some kind of sugary cement, the whole world has been destroyed around you and then rebuilt, and nothing is quite the same again. This happens whether you like it or not. Great stories practice this violent beauty on you in a variety of ways: some by making an absurd world familiar (or vice versa), some with a slow burn, some with a voice that colonizes your thoughts. Some do it quietly, almost without you even noticing, and some do it with high wire acts of imagination or intellect that make you into a breathless witness. The trick, then, is finding the right story, one that is capable of such a thing. This is no easy task. Tastes differ, of course, and it can be confusing to spot the small boat of a great story on the wide sea of fiction. What any reader can offer you in terms of guidance is actually the same thing that any good writer can offer you with the story itself: a way of saying, This is what moved me and made me feel strange and alive in some way; here, why don't you give it a try? In that spirit and in no particular order, here are ten short stories you might've missed that ambushed me with their odd wonder: 1."The Zero Meter Diving Team" by Jim Shepard (BOMB Magazine) This curious, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

As they tread along, Luke noticed a strange, strange occurrence: while he was looking down at the ground, he saw an ankle–high wind stroke all about the surface of the ground. Out of the tree line on his right, birds, birds of all kinds, and thousands of them, flew out and darted up into the sky. It was a frenzied exodus. No one said a word–just looked as they remained froze there. Luke's ears popped, but he felt the pressure in them begin to build once again. He heard what sounded like the pulsating sound of current dancing about the air around him. Then came an earsplitting sound from the forest. Like the sound of a volcano erupting. The shock wave leaned the trees over like they were rubber sticks. The sound of the blowing leaves was a tempestuous one. The wind force knocked them all to ground like they were a sand bag. • 14. What Makes a Good Short Story What Makes a Good Short Story and How Successful is R.K. Narayan in Portraying the Character of Swami in the Short Story 'A Hero'? Nadine Gordimer – 'Short story writers see by the light of the flash; theirs is the art of the only thing we can be sure of – the present moment.' This is a quote from short story writer Nadine Gordimer; referring to how the art of short story writing is to get straight to the point and write everything as it is. This is an art and those who cannot perfect it should admire it instead. Edgar Allan Poe – 'In the whole composition there should be no word written of which the tendency, direct or indirect, is not to the pre–established design; and by such means, with such skill and care, a picture is at...show more content... This is an example of changing the reader's emotions in a matter of a few seconds and it has a positive effect on the feelings towards the story. The story has to have a fast pace to it, meaning that there are no slow starts or moments of the book where the reader can put it down. This means that there should be something humourous, exciting or out of the ordinary that will keep the reader gripping the book and hoping that the story will never end. R.K. Narayan uses irony cleverly in his short story to keep up the fast pace and to keep the reader smiling. The best example of irony R.K. Narayan uses is the actual title of his short story, 'A Hero'. This is due to the fact that throughout the story there are two examples of boys who are not heroes, but are quite hilariously the opposite: cowards. At the start of the story Swami's father reads to him an article from his newspaper, reading 'News is to hand of the bravery of a village lad who, while returning home by the jungle path, came face to face with a tiger' and then the article goes on to describe the fight the boy endured with the tiger and his flight up a tree, where he stayed for half a day till some people came that way and killed the tiger. • 19. Growing Up : A Short Story My life growing up was an utter blur. I was young and had absolutely no idea what was going on. My brothers and I jumped from house to house and constantly became some stranger's responsibility. Losing my mother to drugs, which resulted in me taking care of my younger siblings. Because I was growing up in many settings and going through difficult obstacles, it allowed me to grow into the strong person that I am today. Growing up I suffered from the constant guilt that my mother left because of us kids. She turned to drugs when she struggled to keep it together. She also suffered from many mental illnesses; like bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety. The constant mood swings and depression certainly affected my brothers and I. The condition of living was no longer tolerable; however, I couldn't say anything to anyone because I was petrified that my brothers and I would get split up and be put into a much worse home. After about a month or two of living in this horrid environment, our social worker came and temporarily placed us with our grandparents. After being taken out of foster care, my grandparents were granted temporary custody of us until my father arrived home from the navy. Within the first couple months they were great. We participated in family dinners every night and actively did fun things like playing games and going out. We loved living there, until they got bored of us. They became very impatient with us and would become enraged when we would ask them for anything. I tried relieving any issues of theirs by having them come to me. My grandma occasionally made dinner but for the most part I made them food. I was changing diapers for my one–year–old brother Camron at the time and attempting to potty training my three–year–old brother Nathan. Cooking and cleaning became a routine of mine. • 20. An Outsider: A Short Story The storm continued to vent its temperamental rage on the earth and its people. What an outsider would consider 'nice weather' was completely unheard of. This was the regular routine of the weather, and no one seemed to mind it. Stranded alone in the heavy rain was Ice, a tall tomboy female with bold lavender eyes. Her white strands were cut up into a rebellious bob, silk to the touch. These features were accompanied by pale skin, which bore much resemblance to the coloration to paper when compared to the ink black schoolgirl uniform she often wore, but did not favor. The only reason she started avoiding her classes was simply for the sake of purity. A teacher teaches facts, but also opinions. The students usually follow her lead. It feels only right to agree with what you were taught. If you question the facts, people look at you and think for a while, but you never know if you can successfully convince them ALL. Facts are facts, but can either be a truth or lie. Whatever it is, it has to be a fact, a mysterious one indeed. Maybe there is evidence to facts, but there are vast possibilities. With so many possibilities, which one are you going to believe? The one that was credible enough because of where you learned it. In this society, the importance of how you learned it varies, but the key thing that matters is where you learned it. You can learn your facts from school, television, or law. • 21. Short Story Endings In Short Stories Closure and Endings found in Short Stories Every story must start somewhere, but not every story has to have a complete ending, or even a clear one. With the development of the short story, the variation between short story endings has gradually increased as time has gone on, like the difference between a final ending in Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" or John Cheever's "The Swimmer." However, the endings of some short stories also depend on the style of how the story is written, like Amy Tan's "Two Kinds," which is a part of a larger novel, and Kate Chopin's "The Blind Man," which is a new branch of short fiction writing called microfiction. The ending also comes about based on the subject matter found in the story. For example, Tan is a second–generation Chinese–American like her character, June, in "Two Kinds." Cheever lived through the Great Depression, and his family went through a similar fall from grace like his character Neddy did in "The Swimmer." They say to write what you know, and these authors come to their endings through their own experiences and the type of style that they write in. Flannery O'Connor was a writer on rented time. Confined to her house throughout the final days of her illness, critics theorize that she spent a good amount of time thinking about how her life was coming to a close. Andre Bleikasten, author of "Beginnings and Endings in Flannery O'Connor," believes that the reason why many of her stories end with such a finality Get more content on HelpWriting.net
