first world war. Alliances, imperialism, and the arms build up are the three major causes however, alliances are the most important underlying cause.
Colonialism was a contributor to the war. Great Britain was depicted as a large octopus sucking up and taking over everything in Europe (Doc E). As a
result of this many local European colonies had no freedom of the sea or land (Doc E). In 1913 Great Britain had the largest empire which was
12,740,000 sq. miles so it was considered the mother country (Doc F). During the war it was thought that the more land you had the more power and
better your empires was but this wasn't true at all. European were always scavenging and looking for more land to colonize so this created chaos

In 1890 to 1914 Europeans bought millions of arms in British pounds (Doc C). Germany and Austria – Hungary quadrupled arms in 24 years, but the
triple entente's arms only doubled (Doc C). The chances are that if you have arms you are likely to test tem in combat. Great Britain spent most of
their money on their navy because they are an island and wanted a strong navy for defense. One could argue that their military is important and is
their hammer and an alliance is just a balance of power (Doc D). Additionally they could go into battle if they felt strong than other. This only caused
more tension but didn't really spark
