Portable Heating Calculations
To work out the heating requirement of an area there are several
factors you need to consider.
Volume
Work out the volume of an area by multiplying the length x width x height in metres
Delta
The delta is the heat difference between the ambient temperature (air temperature)
and the room temperature.
Ambient Temperature – Room Temperature = Delta
Insulation
Determine the insulation level of the building requiring heating and attribute a specific
number to each insulation level.
Well insulated i = 1.2
Average insulation i = 2.2
Poor insulation i = 3.0
No insulation i = 4.0

BTU duty required: Volume of area x Delta x Insulation x 4

Electric Heaters
Cross Rental Services' electric heater range is suitable for heating
small areas such as offices to large warehouses.
Cross Rental's range of electric heaters include oil filled radiators, infra-red heaters & space
heaters.
The plug type for each electric heater differs considerably with the smaller kW duty units
requiring single phase power. On the other hand, the more powerful heaters such as the FF42
& FF80 need to be connected to 3 phase power.

Direct Vs Indirect Fired Heaters
Direct Fired Heaters
In a direct fired heater fuel is injected into a combustion chamber where it is ignited
and then burned at a regulated rate. Once burned, it is released with the main air-
stream providing a large volume of heat.
Direct fired gas/oil heaters are designed for heating areas
with large open spaces. It is for this reason that they have
typically been used to heat construction
sites, factories & warehouses.
Due to their combustible nature, direct fired heaters should
not be used in areas where they would be close to
flammable materials such as in marquees.
Indirect Fired Heaters
Similarly, to direct fired heaters, in indirect fired heaters fuel
is injected into a combustion chamber which is gas-tight. In
the combustion chamber it is ignited and burned at a
regulated rate.
Indirect fired heaters deliver a large volume of
heat which is fume-free, dry & safe. This
makes them suitable for marquee heating,
shops, factories & building sites.

Direct Fired Gas
High kW duty gas based heaters
When using direct fired gas heaters it is important to make sure that the area being
heated has sufficient ventilation. Doing so prevents humidity levels from being too
high & ensures that there is not a deficiency in ambient oxygen level.
Direct fired gas heaters are suitable for factories, warehouses & construction sites due
to these areas being well ventilated & not involving combustible materials.

Indirect Fired Oil Heaters
Oil Fired Heaters which produce clean, dry & warm heat
The main benefit of indirect fired heaters is that they deliver a large volume of heat which
is fume-free, dry & safe. This makes them suitable for marquee heating, shops, factories &
building sites.
Indirect heaters are used by Cross Rental in marquee heating. They are preferred to heat
this environment over patio heaters or halogen heaters due to them having internal fans
& not posing the risk of being a trip hazard due to not having obtrusive power cables.
These heaters can be placed outside, out of the way while dry, clean and warm air is
ducted into the space.
Indirect gas heaters have the increased functionality of heating buildings under
construction or which are recovering from floods. The main benefit of indirect gas
heaters in this environment is that they can provide warm, dry and clean air without
increasing the humidity, thus preventing the build-up of mould.

Air Conditioning

How Air Conditioning Works
Air conditioning is a process by which heat and moisture is removed from an area to
provide a cool atmosphere for occupants, thus improving their comfort.
Air conditioning has a wide range of uses. For example, this could be in the form of
comfort applications where an indoor environment’s temperature is kept constant to
provide comfort for the individuals that work there. Comfort applications could include
cooling industrial spaces such as warehouses in which there are workers or providing
temperature control in commercial buildings such as offices.
Air conditioning could be used for process applications such as server room cooling or
laboratory use. In these situations air conditioning systems are put in place to facilitate
a process. Refrigeration is used by air conditioners to chill indoor air through the
process, phase conversion, where liquid is converted into gas, thus absorbing heat.
Phase conversion is used in air conditioners to force chemical compounds to
evaporate & condense in a repetitious cycle within a closed system of coils.

Cooling fan units
Portable electric fans capable of moving air quickly & quietly to create a light breeze.
These fans are mounted on a steel frame to prevent the fan from tipping over and have a
fan guard to ensure maximum safety.
Ducted air conditioning units
Ducted air conditioning units provide cooling to an area while creating minimal
noise. Cool air is dispersed throughout a room whilst heat is transferred out of the area.
Water cooled split type air conditioners
Split type air conditioning units are ideal for use in server rooms & data cooling. This is
due to the units having the benefit of positioning the waste heat energy far away from
the area being cooled.
Evaporative coolers
Evaporative coolers are able to provide cooling through evaporating water. These units
are best used in environments with high temperatures and low humidity.

Cross Rental Services offer remote monitoring for fuel on our bunded fuel tanks for oil
boilers & oil fired heaters, as well as performance data on our boiler & chiller hire range.
This means that whatever you hire, we can give you total peace of mind, be it fault
finding or fuel monitoring.
Cross Rental Services can provide bunded fuel tanks to support our heating & cooling
solutions, fully secured & compliant with all current environmental legislation whilst

A 240V 50Hz single phase socket is the most common power supply

FF3 space heater.
A 110V 50Hz single phase socket is mostly associated with the construction
industry.
A large number of our products run on this power such as the EC32 & EC55
indirect heaters as well as our dehumidifier range.
A 415V 50Hz three phase socket is traditionally used in industrial
environments with powerful electrical equipment requiring this to run.
Our most powerful electrical heaters such as the FF42 and FF80 run on this
