HIRE BASED ON UNIQUE FIT, NOT PEDIGREE
Most companies focus on excellent backgrounds (education, work experience at
marquee companies etc.) as the primary hiring criteria. We recommend focusing on
the right fit.
Companies that are in dynamic change environments should focus on hiring
management members that have been battle tested in chaotic and fast paced work
environments, living with limited resources and hands-on experience (with minimal
staff and direct reports). Don’t hire management personnel that have lived a
comfortable (pampered) existence in sheltered environments, who enjoy endless
meetings, extended support staff, and the indecisiveness of matrixed environments.
For companies that are currently facing a crisis (regulatory, commoditization, etc.),
focus on hiring management teams that have survived a prior crisis. It is more
important to focus on relevant fit and their ability to quickly learn and adapt, rather
than their past pedigree (which may not translate into success at your company).
