2. WHAT IS
PRIMARY CELL?
Primary cells are cells taken directly from living
tissue and established for growth in vitro.
These cells are retaining of the main natural
functional of the tissue.
Generally, they retain normal morphology, cellular
function, growth characteristics, cellular markers,
signaling and genetic integrity when propagated in
culture.

3. CELL LINES PROFILE
➤ Cells that have been continually
passaged over a long period of time.
➤ Cell lines can be finite or continuous.
➤ They are preferably used for convenience
as they are easy to handle and widely
published
➤ However, these cells less preferred as a
biologically relevant option, since they
have lost the true characteristics of the
original tissue from which they were
isolated.

4. The Major Differences Between Primary Cells and Cell Lines
Primary Cells Cell Lines
Cell Division In Vitro Limited Indefinite
More Closely Mimic
In Vivo Conditions
Yes No
Chromosomal Aberrations Minimal Several
Provide High Quality Data on
Interactive Pathways,
Processes, and Function
Retain functional enzymatic and
signaling pathways of parent tissue
Potentially provide misleading data
due to aberrant enzymatic or
signaling pathway activities
Authentication required
before use
No, if bought commercially
Yes, mandated by many government
institutes and scientific journals
Care and Maintenance of
the Cells
Can be complex and difficult,
especially in maintaining
differentiated state
Easy to maintain or propagate

With the development of technology, the primary cell culture has changed.
New tools, new approach.
6. Primary cell types: They’re the real deal!
Knowing the “how &
where” of the cells and
support materials is
crucial.
Using a well-characterized,
terminally differentiated cell
type can deliver confidence
and assurance in data
generated in vitro.

7. Some of the applications where primary cells are being
used
➤ Cellular pathway analysis
➤ ADME & toxicology studies
➤ Regenerative medicine
➤ Adult stem cells
➤ Metabolic disease research
➤ Comparative studies vs. transformed cell lines
➤ HTS/HCA screening
➤ Other platforms
