In an effort to ensure the November 3 general election is as accessible as possible for all Iowa voters, legislative leaders confirmed on July 17 that they will allow registered voters in the state to fill out absentee ballots. The decision was made in response to COVID-19 concerns cited by many Iowans who would have otherwise preferred not to stand in line to cast ballots in person. Prospective voters can still visit polling sites on November 3, but the absentee ballot decision now ensures residents in all 99 counties will have equal voting access. Prior to the announcement, auditors in 18 counties had already sent out absentee requests. Majority Republicans originally opposed Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate's decision to allow absentee ballots in the June primary, but voted unanimously to allow them for the upcoming general election. Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver, R-Ankeny, noted it was important for the election to be "predictable for campaigns," as well as secure, accessible, and uniform across all counties.
