SANCTUARY OF SERENITY
FALL 2014
The object of the designing of a floor plan
was to focus on a design aspect that requires
planning and organization into a comprehensive
and meaningful whole - a single dwelling unit.
The goal was to heighten our understandings of
organizational requirements and opportu-
nities, which requires the understanding of
the dimensions of space and the furnishings
within that space. While organizing the
dwelling as a whole, we also had to be
thinking about single spaces in terms of sensory,
experiential, and ritual qualities. This single space
is the master bedroom - Sanctuary of Serenity.
The numerous windows and garden patio allow
for the occupant to experience nature within their
home. The immediate glass wall is to ignore the
idea of a hallway and acknowledge there being
a separate area upon entering the room. Major-
ity of the bedroom is designed with windows to
allow natural light and picturesque views, creat-
ing the illusion of a sanctuary. This master bed-
room is not just an area for rejuvenation, but an
escape route from troubles - it is designed for one

GRANITE REEF DAM, MESA, AZ - Partner: Colton Ranson
This program focused on the aspects of water. The main focus was the
imaginary and real potentials of water. The program was designed to
incorporate both the dream and function of architecture, engaging
imagination through the spiritual and empirical realities of architecture to
heighten phenomenal experiences. In Phoenix, water could be used to play an
essential ole in the making of a poetic city that stimulates and relates to us as
human beings - we considered water in Phoenix as a means of exploring that
relationshipbetweenoneiricandmaterialphenomenainthemakingofarchitecture.

The building is designed to replicate the movement of water over the dam when the canal floods.
The building replicates the original infrastructure of the dam, being recognized as an extension of the
dam. The building is also designed as a container space, allowing water to consistently be held in
the dry water bed, manipulating its original purpose for only hold water during floods. The progam
is focused on allowing visitors to have multiple experiences with different movements of water: the
filtering of the canal’s water along the dam, multiple water falls, passing through the container space
in a glass elevator, and swimming in different pools.

The designing of a fire station was intended to expose
us to a multivalent program that at once houses per-
formance driven requirements focused on public safety
as well as community-serving spaces that are intended
to be welcoming and inclusive of a variety of users and
functions. This program was to enhance our understand-
ings of the many complexities within a fire station - their
placement and hierarchial value; to test climate and
comfort phenomena; to develop the ability to analyze
building performance and integrate this analysis as a
design tool. This design focuses on the separation of living
and working spaces and engaging the community
into the building without over-stepping private
boundaries.

FLAGSTAFF, AZ
ThisprogramfocusesonrenovatinganddesigningthenewFlagstaffCoalescence.Theproposed
facility is a business start-up incubator, which exposes new business leaders to hands on
entrepreneurship, technology, and craftsmanship activities. The goals of this program are to
provide a facility that promotes adaptive reuse and encouraging social integration within
their community; to provide opportunities for new business leaders to participate in
individual and collaborative hands on activities related to leadership development,
decision-making, citizenship, and community service; and to provide resources to connect
new business leaders to mentors and institutions to solve today’s challenging problems.
This newly renovated collaboration facility is focused towards new marketing companies.
The new design maintains much of the building’s historical structure, with changes
of new windows and an interior courtyard. The building’s design consists of an open
floor plan, with almost all of the walls for separate rooms being glass of different colors.
13. AESTHETIC LOT

The objective of this program was to create a mixed-
use multifamily development. This development focuses
on the needs and community engagement of emerging
artists and other creative types. The intent of this program
was to provide affordable live-work housing for this
demographic and their families with many guidelines and
requirements. The development consists of 1-, 2-, and 3-
bedroom units, each with a space for a working studio, with
at least 3,000 sf of ground floor commercial space and
at least 1,500 sf of community space, while incorporating
sustainable strategies.
