3. Brown vs. Board
Oliver Brown argued that schools for black
children were not equal to the white schools.
● Separate but equal was
unconstitutional.
● Lead to today where all races receive
an equal education.
4. Little Rock Nine
Little rock nine was a group of nine black
students who the governor sent to Central high
to attend school.
They were escorted by armed gaurds for safety
There were also federal troops deployed to deal
with the protestors.
- As seen in the photo, these nine students were
harrassed.
5. Charter Schools
● Charter schools are attended by
choice
● They were created so that rules
and regulations could be changed
and different from public schools
● Minnesota was the first state to
pass the charter school law.
● Charter schools receive public
money and donations to fund their
schools.
6. Political Factors
Politics seem t be in every aspect of life these
days, and there is no question whether it is in
education as well. Some of the most known
programs in education were politically decided.
For example:
● No Child Left Behind
● Common Core
● Dreamers and politics
7. No child left behind
● Gave schools more money
● However, teachers were held
accountable for students results and
progress.
● No overall standards.
Why it didnt work:
● Too much emphasis on test scores
● Pressure on schools with bad teachers
and administrators
8. Common Core
● Common Core is a state led effort by the
National governors association.
● It is being implemented in 45 states and
D.C.
● Goal is to set students up for success
when transfering to college.
● Research and evidence based.
9. Dream Act
The Dream Act was a legislative proposal for a
multi-phase process to qualify kids under the
age of 15 into U.S. residency.
● Approximately 1.4 million people are
Dreamers
● Average age is now 25 yrs old (have
been residents for over 10 years)
● 93% are employed
