SELF-EXPRESSION
Miami University Fashion & Design, Miami’s largest student organization,
seeks to promote and inspire self-expression and professional and creative
development. MUF&D provides students with a platform to explore their
passions and gain fashion related experience not found in the classroom.
The organization consists of seven committees -- finance, event planning,
strategic partnerships, pr/marketing, modeling, graphic design, and design.
Our committees give members insight into different facets of the industry
while providing them with the marketable skills as they play a hands-on
role in planning and executing MUF&D’s 40+ events throughout the year.

MUF&D works closely with the university’s fashion program to provide
exposure to prospective students and give current students experiential
learning opportunities. MUF&D began a movement of fashion and design
on Miami’s campus thirteen years ago, and continues to be the voice of
students who are interested in the fashion industry. MUF&D, above all,
works to aid its members in breaking into the fashion industry and pursuing
their career goals.
is to cultivate passionate, creative
student leaders so that we may, collectively,
strengthen the movement of fashion and design
as a way of expression.

OUR MISSION
Thirteen leaders, seven committees, 58 models, 19 designers,
and 450 organization members have devoted the last eight
months to one outstanding organization, Miami University Fashion
& Design. This year, our executive board seeked to have purpose
and provide value through every event we hosted and every
initiative we sought to implement. Our organization has seen a
38% growth in membership from last year -- reflecting a year of
great progress and a rapidly growing community of authentic,
inspiring student leaders; growth which we celebrate tonight.
MUF&D implemented a year-long sustainability initiative to
educate members about the environmental effect the fashion
industry has and encourage members to adopt sustainable
practices. The main part of the initiative began with our first
ever Clothing Swap where Miami students could bring clothing
and accessories to swap for equivalent pieces. Six designers
collaborated to reuse remaining items from the Swap to create
one cohesive street style collection, ‘Reuse, Recycle, Refashion’.
All items not utilized in this collection will be donated to Dress for
Success, a local Cincinnati charity.
This year has been marked by a deeper focus on the professional
development of MUF&D members. For the first time ever, our
Friends of Fashion event included out-of-state panelists from Ann
Taylor, Victoria’s Secret, Madewell, and Calvin Klein -- providing
members with insight from industry leaders in NYC. We elevated
our Wintour Workshop event, a workshop preparing members
for Spring Career Fair, with a panel of MUF&D members with
fashion internship experience, advice and elevator pitch critiques
from an Abercrombie & Fitch recruiter, and a video from various
Miami alumni providing networking tips. Continuing this progress,
MUF&D participated in the Miami University Women Giving
Circle’s grant competition. We’re humbled to be a recipient of a
$10,000 grant to implement an experiential learning project during
the 2019-2020 school year, focusing on events that will provide
members with the experiences, skills, and connections needed
to break into the fashion industry and provide financially limited
students with assistance to experience the same foundational
opportunities.
MUF&D welcomes its first ever major clothing sponsorship with
Lane Bryant and Justice of Ascena Retail Group -- an exciting
milestone for the organization and a partnership that was pivotal
in the success of this year’s show.
A special thank you to my executive team -- it has been the
privilege of a lifetime to lead aside twelve incredibly tenacious
and creative individuals. This year’s progress would not have been
possible without each of you.
Cheers to celebrating a year of hard work through Elements and
celebrating the power of fashion and design as a way of self-
expression.

DESIGNERS
BEN KRAUTHEIM
ALIVE AT NIGHT
In his first collection for MUF&D, sophomore
Ben Krautheim draws inspiration from
European nightlife. On his study abroad trip
this past summer, Ben explored the club
culture in some of Europe’s top cities for
nightlife including Prague, Amsterdam, and
Budapest. His collection focuses on the
way the colors and textures of European
nightclubs stand out against the night sky.
Ben chose to focus entirely on menswear for
his first collection, with a concentration on
casual wear and streetwear.
For her third MUF&D collection, designer
Kaitlyn Gomez creates a six piece collection.
Kaitlyn’s inspiration for her collection comes
from her love of winter and snow. She is a
very simplistic person and loves all white. For
this reason, Kaitlyn has chosen to create an
all white Spring collection -- a mix of ready
to wear garments with a touch of luxury.
Kaitlyn would like to thank her family and all
her friends who have supported her through
every show.
KAITLYN GOMEZ
SNOWDROP
ELLIE STILLMAN
BELOVED
For her third and final collection, Ellie Stillman
creates a four piece bridal collection. Ellie has
always loved everything bridal -- so it only
made sense to end her MUF&D career with
a bridal collection. Taken from the Jewish
marriage agreement the newlyweds sign,
Beloved comes from a promise between the
bride and the groom: “I am my beloved, and
my beloved is mine.” Ellie wanted to embody
this statement, creating romantic pieces within
an idyllic color-palette. So here comes the
bride, but watch out, she’s not wearing white!
DONGYUN LIU
SEA & EARTH
For her first MUF&D collection, Dongyun Liu
creates her designs based on her passion for
the sea. “Sometimes living in a foreign country
alone feels like drowning by water; it’s so deep
and hard to breathe. You know there is only
one thing that could save you, so you have
to push all the pressure away from you and
swim upstream.” She creates the elements
that represent freedom and happiness with
color representing the pressure she feels as an
international student. Dongyun puts her heart
into fashion and will keep living her dream.
For her third MUF&D collection, junior Lexi
Scherzinger creates Primavera, inspired by
the Botticelli painting. While studying abroad
last semester in Paris, Lexi traveled to Florence
and saw Botticelli’s most famous works,
Primavera and The Birth of Venus. His work
with light colors, intricate florals, and delicate
fabrics inspired these designs. Lexi wanted to
play with color and feminine silhouettes. She
would like to thank her parents, Linda and
Chris, and her professor and mentor, Della
Reams, for their constant support.
LEXI SCHERZINGER
PRIMAVERA
Michelle Parilla reveals her second
collection Feroce which is inspired by Italian
couture. Feroce translates to ‘fierce’ in
italian representing the chic couture with
an edgy twist. This line incorporates luxury
fringe, shimmering beige satin, maroon
leather and tuxedo ruffles. Being Italian
herself, Michelle wished to incorporate
her background along with her love for
streetwear into a unique collection.

JACKIE SCHUTJER
DARK LAYERS, NEW LIGHT
For her final MUF&D collection, Fifi Oginni
creates a collection to evoke the most
flamboyant, joyful, expressive and pure parts
of femininity. She celebrates everything about
being a woman and draws a certain inspiration
from the lense of a woman of color. If the
color pink is mostly associated with women,
then she’ll be sure to leave a mark. Fifi would
like to thank her family, especially her mother
for being a beacon of feminine force and
celebrating what it is to be a woman with a
passion, confidence, intelligence and a dream.
Emma’s second collection combines boho
textiles with bold, modern lines to create
a chic, uptown vibe for everyday lux wear.
Emma’s line is inspired by her love for taking
simple pieces to the next level with unique
finishes and luxurious fabrics. She designed
her line to be easy to wear for every day, or
going out.
For her first MUF&D collection, senior Jackie
Schutjer creates a collection inspired by
hope. She utilizes textile layering to represent
how our cumulative past experiences
layer together to shape who we are today.
Jackie accents dark forms with bright white
trimmings to emphasize the prevalence of
hope throughout the human experience.
She would like to thank her grandmother for
inspiring her love for design and her friends,
family & professors for their love & support
throughout her journey.
For his first collection, sophomore Randall
Kraujalis creates a five piece collection
inspired by the strategy and the power status
of the actual pieces in the game of chess.
Inspired by intense and structural architecture,
and the simple boldness of black and white,
Randall creates a stunning personification of
the Pawn, Knight, Bishop, Queen, and King.
He wants to thank his number one fans, his
Mom (Sue), and his mentor (Angela). Randall
hopes you are struck by his collection and can
feel the power walking down the runway.
RANDALL KRAUJALIS
CHECKMATE
For his first collection, sophomore Thomas
Gillotti creates Mi Amor, telling the story of
two young lovers in Spain and their lives
growing up together. Inspired by Spanish
Art and Culture, Thomas provides a modern
interpretation of classic Spanish influences.
Thomas is proud to be using a print in his
collection that he designed and printed
in collaboration with the Miami Fashion
Department. He would like to thank his family,
the design directors, Della Reams, and his
friends for their support and encouragement!

COLLABORATIVE
COLLECTION
This collection features the work of six
designers, coming together in the design
process to create one cohesive body of
work. Each design is created from leftover
garments from MUF&D’s Clothing Swap. The
garments were carefully deconstructed and
reconstructed into the looks that appear on
the runway, and serve as a testament to the
new life that can be given to old clothes.
REUSE,
RECYCLE,
REFASHION
For his first MUF&D collection, Nate creates
a three piece collection focused on how
classic suiting and tailoring can be turned into
something less conventional. Instead of suits
with blacks, greys, and navys that we tend
to see day-to-day, Nate uses metallics and
bright colors to give more life and vibrance
to a clothing genre that can be dull and
monotonous. Taking inspiration from suiting
in the 1930’s and the jewelry designs of René
Lalique, Nate aims to show suits can be so
much more than just business wear.
NATE VANCUYK
PEAKS OF GOLD
AMANDA KLUCK
ASTRO
In her first collection for MUF&D, Amanda
Kluck creates ASTRO, a five piece collection
inspired by astrology. Amanda is intrigued by
zodiac signs and how they affect a person’s
psychological landscape and personality
traits. She explores the five signs that make
up her own astrological birth chart: Capricorn,
Pisces, Leo, Scorpio and Sagittarius. Amanda
would also like to thank her family, professors
and friends for their love and support
throughout her time at Miami -- love you guys
to the moon and back.
For her second MUF&D collection, sophomore
Jessica von Zastrow creates a collection
made entirely of recycled denim. Jessica
transformed over twenty pairs of jeans
(generously donated by friends and family)
into something new. This project challenged
Jessica to apply her creativity in a different
way as she reimagined the potential of an
iconic fashion staple. She would like to thank
her family and friends who are a constant
source of inspiration and support (and denim).
JESSICA VON ZASTROW
RE-
a prefix: again in a different way
For her third and final collection with
MUF&D, senior Kendra Willhoite creates a
collection made With Love and Best Stitches.
The collection is a patchwork of fabric scraps
from both her own and her grandmother’s
past projects. Kendra learned how to sew
from her grandma at a young age and was
inspired by her passion. She would like
to thank her family for putting up with her
craziness and her friends for all of their
support. When life throws you scraps, piece
together something beautiful!
KENDRA WILLHOITE
WITH LOVE & BEST STITCHES
For her first MUF&D collection, Rachel Huhn
creates Detour, a 6 piece collection inspired
by road construction and utility work. Rachel
is a senior Fashion Design Major and when
coming up with a collection last fall, she
went outside to look for inspiration. Rachel
began commuting to Oxford this year from her
hometown, Cincinnati and what more can you
expect than constant construction on her way
to school. Rachel began to get inspired by the
aspects of construction zones and decided to
put a spin on construction wear.

Akinda Johnson debuts her line Akinda
Mayanna with her first collection: “Sun
Shadows”. Merging form with function, Akinda
creates luxury swimwear that also function as
bodysuits. Her collection is inspired by neutral
colors and abstract textures, executed with
hand-beaded details. Sun Shadows references
the ability to take these suits from dawn to
dusk. The first piece is designed for a morning
beach walk and the last, an outfit for dancing.
Akinda Mayanna delivers the essence of a
simple, modern lifestyle on the coast.
AKINDA JOHNSON
SUN SHADOWS
For her first MUF&D collection, junior Rosie
Kalis creates a whimsical bridal collection
targeted to help women look and feel their
best on their big day. Rosie explores a more
feminine side, and what day do women feel
more feminine and elegant than on their
wedding day? She was inspired by pale tones
and calming textures while still adding spunk.
Rosie designed vintage and modern styles
creating one-of-a-kind gowns. She hopes you
feel Enchanted by the collection and can feel
the love walking down the runway!
ROSIE KALIS
ENCHANTED
For her final MUF&D collection, Kate Smith
creates a collection dedicated to her
grandfather, Martin Smith. Kate’s grandfather
played a large role in her life and motivated
her to create fashion that was unapologetically
herself. She chose to incorporate pink to
portray the power of such a bold color in
today’s world. Combined with highly structured
garments, the idea is that pink does not
always have to be feminine. Kate would like to
thank her family, her professors, Collin, Olivia,
and Arianna for being her biggest support
throughout her creation of this collection.

13th Annual Fashion Show | Elements

  • 1. E LE MEN T S MIAMI UNIVERSITY FASHION AND DESIGN
  • 2. AUTHENTICITY | COMMUNITY | PROFESSIONAL & CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT | ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT | LEADERSHIP | SELF-EXPRESSION Miami University Fashion & Design, Miami’s largest student organization, seeks to promote and inspire self-expression and professional and creative development. MUF&D provides students with a platform to explore their passions and gain fashion related experience not found in the classroom. The organization consists of seven committees -- finance, event planning, strategic partnerships, pr/marketing, modeling, graphic design, and design. Our committees give members insight into different facets of the industry while providing them with the marketable skills as they play a hands-on role in planning and executing MUF&D’s 40+ events throughout the year. MUF&D works closely with the university’s fashion program to provide exposure to prospective students and give current students experiential learning opportunities. MUF&D began a movement of fashion and design on Miami’s campus thirteen years ago, and continues to be the voice of students who are interested in the fashion industry. MUF&D, above all, works to aid its members in breaking into the fashion industry and pursuing their career goals.
  • 3. is to cultivate passionate, creative student leaders so that we may, collectively, strengthen the movement of fashion and design as a way of expression. www.mufashiondesign.com | @mufd_ OUR MISSION
  • 4. Thirteen leaders, seven committees, 58 models, 19 designers, and 450 organization members have devoted the last eight months to one outstanding organization, Miami University Fashion & Design. This year, our executive board seeked to have purpose and provide value through every event we hosted and every initiative we sought to implement. Our organization has seen a 38% growth in membership from last year -- reflecting a year of great progress and a rapidly growing community of authentic, inspiring student leaders; growth which we celebrate tonight. MUF&D implemented a year-long sustainability initiative to educate members about the environmental effect the fashion industry has and encourage members to adopt sustainable practices. The main part of the initiative began with our first ever Clothing Swap where Miami students could bring clothing and accessories to swap for equivalent pieces. Six designers collaborated to reuse remaining items from the Swap to create one cohesive street style collection, ‘Reuse, Recycle, Refashion’. All items not utilized in this collection will be donated to Dress for Success, a local Cincinnati charity. This year has been marked by a deeper focus on the professional development of MUF&D members. For the first time ever, our Friends of Fashion event included out-of-state panelists from Ann Taylor, Victoria’s Secret, Madewell, and Calvin Klein -- providing members with insight from industry leaders in NYC. We elevated our Wintour Workshop event, a workshop preparing members for Spring Career Fair, with a panel of MUF&D members with fashion internship experience, advice and elevator pitch critiques from an Abercrombie & Fitch recruiter, and a video from various Miami alumni providing networking tips. Continuing this progress, MUF&D participated in the Miami University Women Giving
  • 5. Circle’s grant competition. We’re humbled to be a recipient of a $10,000 grant to implement an experiential learning project during the 2019-2020 school year, focusing on events that will provide members with the experiences, skills, and connections needed to break into the fashion industry and provide financially limited students with assistance to experience the same foundational opportunities. MUF&D welcomes its first ever major clothing sponsorship with Lane Bryant and Justice of Ascena Retail Group -- an exciting milestone for the organization and a partnership that was pivotal in the success of this year’s show. A special thank you to my executive team -- it has been the privilege of a lifetime to lead aside twelve incredibly tenacious and creative individuals. This year’s progress would not have been possible without each of you. Cheers to celebrating a year of hard work through Elements and celebrating the power of fashion and design as a way of self- expression. PRESIDENT RACHAEL STEED

  • 13. BEN KRAUTHEIM ALIVE AT NIGHT In his first collection for MUF&D, sophomore Ben Krautheim draws inspiration from European nightlife. On his study abroad trip this past summer, Ben explored the club culture in some of Europe’s top cities for nightlife including Prague, Amsterdam, and Budapest. His collection focuses on the way the colors and textures of European nightclubs stand out against the night sky. Ben chose to focus entirely on menswear for his first collection, with a concentration on casual wear and streetwear. For her third MUF&D collection, designer Kaitlyn Gomez creates a six piece collection. Kaitlyn’s inspiration for her collection comes from her love of winter and snow. She is a very simplistic person and loves all white. For this reason, Kaitlyn has chosen to create an all white Spring collection -- a mix of ready to wear garments with a touch of luxury. Kaitlyn would like to thank her family and all her friends who have supported her through every show. KAITLYN GOMEZ SNOWDROP ELLIE STILLMAN BELOVED For her third and final collection, Ellie Stillman creates a four piece bridal collection. Ellie has always loved everything bridal -- so it only made sense to end her MUF&D career with a bridal collection. Taken from the Jewish marriage agreement the newlyweds sign, Beloved comes from a promise between the bride and the groom: “I am my beloved, and my beloved is mine.” Ellie wanted to embody this statement, creating romantic pieces within an idyllic color-palette. So here comes the bride, but watch out, she’s not wearing white!
  • 14. DONGYUN LIU SEA & EARTH For her first MUF&D collection, Dongyun Liu creates her designs based on her passion for the sea. “Sometimes living in a foreign country alone feels like drowning by water; it’s so deep and hard to breathe. You know there is only one thing that could save you, so you have to push all the pressure away from you and swim upstream.” She creates the elements that represent freedom and happiness with color representing the pressure she feels as an international student. Dongyun puts her heart into fashion and will keep living her dream. For her third MUF&D collection, junior Lexi Scherzinger creates Primavera, inspired by the Botticelli painting. While studying abroad last semester in Paris, Lexi traveled to Florence and saw Botticelli’s most famous works, Primavera and The Birth of Venus. His work with light colors, intricate florals, and delicate fabrics inspired these designs. Lexi wanted to play with color and feminine silhouettes. She would like to thank her parents, Linda and Chris, and her professor and mentor, Della Reams, for their constant support. LEXI SCHERZINGER PRIMAVERA Michelle Parilla reveals her second collection Feroce which is inspired by Italian couture. Feroce translates to ‘fierce’ in italian representing the chic couture with an edgy twist. This line incorporates luxury fringe, shimmering beige satin, maroon leather and tuxedo ruffles. Being Italian herself, Michelle wished to incorporate her background along with her love for streetwear into a unique collection. MICHELLE PARILLA FEROCE
  • 15. FIFI OGINNI PINK + WHITE EMMA JARARD EMPIRE STATE OF MIND JACKIE SCHUTJER DARK LAYERS, NEW LIGHT For her final MUF&D collection, Fifi Oginni creates a collection to evoke the most flamboyant, joyful, expressive and pure parts of femininity. She celebrates everything about being a woman and draws a certain inspiration from the lense of a woman of color. If the color pink is mostly associated with women, then she’ll be sure to leave a mark. Fifi would like to thank her family, especially her mother for being a beacon of feminine force and celebrating what it is to be a woman with a passion, confidence, intelligence and a dream. Emma’s second collection combines boho textiles with bold, modern lines to create a chic, uptown vibe for everyday lux wear. Emma’s line is inspired by her love for taking simple pieces to the next level with unique finishes and luxurious fabrics. She designed her line to be easy to wear for every day, or going out. For her first MUF&D collection, senior Jackie Schutjer creates a collection inspired by hope. She utilizes textile layering to represent how our cumulative past experiences layer together to shape who we are today. Jackie accents dark forms with bright white trimmings to emphasize the prevalence of hope throughout the human experience. She would like to thank her grandmother for inspiring her love for design and her friends, family & professors for their love & support throughout her journey.
  • 16. For his first collection, sophomore Randall Kraujalis creates a five piece collection inspired by the strategy and the power status of the actual pieces in the game of chess. Inspired by intense and structural architecture, and the simple boldness of black and white, Randall creates a stunning personification of the Pawn, Knight, Bishop, Queen, and King. He wants to thank his number one fans, his Mom (Sue), and his mentor (Angela). Randall hopes you are struck by his collection and can feel the power walking down the runway. RANDALL KRAUJALIS CHECKMATE For his first collection, sophomore Thomas Gillotti creates Mi Amor, telling the story of two young lovers in Spain and their lives growing up together. Inspired by Spanish Art and Culture, Thomas provides a modern interpretation of classic Spanish influences. Thomas is proud to be using a print in his collection that he designed and printed in collaboration with the Miami Fashion Department. He would like to thank his family, the design directors, Della Reams, and his friends for their support and encouragement! THOMAS GILLOTTI MI AMOR COLLABORATIVE COLLECTION This collection features the work of six designers, coming together in the design process to create one cohesive body of work. Each design is created from leftover garments from MUF&D’s Clothing Swap. The garments were carefully deconstructed and reconstructed into the looks that appear on the runway, and serve as a testament to the new life that can be given to old clothes. REUSE, RECYCLE, REFASHION
  • 17. For his first MUF&D collection, Nate creates a three piece collection focused on how classic suiting and tailoring can be turned into something less conventional. Instead of suits with blacks, greys, and navys that we tend to see day-to-day, Nate uses metallics and bright colors to give more life and vibrance to a clothing genre that can be dull and monotonous. Taking inspiration from suiting in the 1930’s and the jewelry designs of René Lalique, Nate aims to show suits can be so much more than just business wear. NATE VANCUYK PEAKS OF GOLD AMANDA KLUCK ASTRO In her first collection for MUF&D, Amanda Kluck creates ASTRO, a five piece collection inspired by astrology. Amanda is intrigued by zodiac signs and how they affect a person’s psychological landscape and personality traits. She explores the five signs that make up her own astrological birth chart: Capricorn, Pisces, Leo, Scorpio and Sagittarius. Amanda would also like to thank her family, professors and friends for their love and support throughout her time at Miami -- love you guys to the moon and back. For her second MUF&D collection, sophomore Jessica von Zastrow creates a collection made entirely of recycled denim. Jessica transformed over twenty pairs of jeans (generously donated by friends and family) into something new. This project challenged Jessica to apply her creativity in a different way as she reimagined the potential of an iconic fashion staple. She would like to thank her family and friends who are a constant source of inspiration and support (and denim). JESSICA VON ZASTROW RE- a prefix: again in a different way
  • 18. For her third and final collection with MUF&D, senior Kendra Willhoite creates a collection made With Love and Best Stitches. The collection is a patchwork of fabric scraps from both her own and her grandmother’s past projects. Kendra learned how to sew from her grandma at a young age and was inspired by her passion. She would like to thank her family for putting up with her craziness and her friends for all of their support. When life throws you scraps, piece together something beautiful! KENDRA WILLHOITE WITH LOVE & BEST STITCHES For her first MUF&D collection, Rachel Huhn creates Detour, a 6 piece collection inspired by road construction and utility work. Rachel is a senior Fashion Design Major and when coming up with a collection last fall, she went outside to look for inspiration. Rachel began commuting to Oxford this year from her hometown, Cincinnati and what more can you expect than constant construction on her way to school. Rachel began to get inspired by the aspects of construction zones and decided to put a spin on construction wear. RACHEL HUHN DETOUR Akinda Johnson debuts her line Akinda Mayanna with her first collection: “Sun Shadows”. Merging form with function, Akinda creates luxury swimwear that also function as bodysuits. Her collection is inspired by neutral colors and abstract textures, executed with hand-beaded details. Sun Shadows references the ability to take these suits from dawn to dusk. The first piece is designed for a morning beach walk and the last, an outfit for dancing. Akinda Mayanna delivers the essence of a simple, modern lifestyle on the coast. AKINDA JOHNSON SUN SHADOWS
  • 19. For her first MUF&D collection, junior Rosie Kalis creates a whimsical bridal collection targeted to help women look and feel their best on their big day. Rosie explores a more feminine side, and what day do women feel more feminine and elegant than on their wedding day? She was inspired by pale tones and calming textures while still adding spunk. Rosie designed vintage and modern styles creating one-of-a-kind gowns. She hopes you feel Enchanted by the collection and can feel the love walking down the runway! ROSIE KALIS ENCHANTED For her final MUF&D collection, Kate Smith creates a collection dedicated to her grandfather, Martin Smith. Kate’s grandfather played a large role in her life and motivated her to create fashion that was unapologetically herself. She chose to incorporate pink to portray the power of such a bold color in today’s world. Combined with highly structured garments, the idea is that pink does not always have to be feminine. Kate would like to thank her family, her professors, Collin, Olivia, and Arianna for being her biggest support throughout her creation of this collection. KATE SMITH JAMES & MARTIN
