Causes of Genocide Essay
Genocide is an action that is not unique to any one set of specific circumstances. It knows no bounds of time or location. From thousands or years
ago to present day and on every civilized continent, the eradication of entire groups of people has occurred. The current definition of genocide was
established by the United Nations in 1948: "(a) Killing members of [a] group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c)
Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures
intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group" "with intent to destroy, in whole or in

Perhaps one of the most relevant examples of genocide denial is in the United States' history. It is estimated that in 1500 there were some 12 million
Native Americans living in North America, but by 1900 this number had been reduced to 237,000 (Lewy). Yet while mass murders of American
Indians were all too common during this time period, Ward Churchill, in his book A Little Matter ofGenocide: Holocaust and Denial in the Americas
1492 to the Present, explains discussion of these occurrences is limited in early education and the media to only a few events such as the 1864
Sand Creek Massacre and the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre so they may be dismissed as anomalies (2). He also explains that this denial is
furthered in two more fashions. The first is the underestimation of the number of Native Americans living in North American prior to European
colonization because "the deaths of people who never existed need not be explained" (2). The second is the image of the "warlike" and "aggressive"
American Indian, which permits the murders of such savages to be portrayed as defensive and necessary when the true source of Native American
aggression was more likely due to settlers ceaselessly encroaching on their homelands (3). Churchill likens this scenario to a hypothetical German
victory during World War II, "When the Poles, led by sullen Jewish chiefs,

Genocide, it is not just murder, it is extermination. The world has lost an abounding amount of lives due to the vicious acts of genocide. There have
been many 'preventive' measures being performed such as the conference in Montreal held in 2007. At said conference the United Nations (officials)
not only spoke about preventing genocide, they also listened to 75 year–old, Marika Nene. Nene experienced the anti–gypsy massacres that occurred
during World War II. "I had no choice. I had to give myself up to the soldiers (...) they violated me. I still have nightmares about it." Genocide has
affected millions of lives and Marika Nene is just one of them. Many have often inquired the following question, 'can the world resolve the problem of

In simpler words, we people are evil and automatically judge others by their characteristics with absolutely no mercy. Of course not everyone goes as
far as performing mass killings, but people do evaluate others on the most minute and basic features a person obtains. Classifying others by their
appearance is what eventually leads to massacres and 'ethnic cleansing.' 'Ethnic cleansing' is a softer term used in replacement of 'eliminating a portion
of an ethnic group to get others to evacuate.' Bosnia is one country guilty of committing this act. "(...) genocidal acts were used to attempt to instill
the fear and devastation necessary to get the Muslims to leave their land and take refuge elsewhere, but that complete extermination was never the
goal," said by Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University. Another wicked performance of genocide was the 'Tutsis in Rwanda'
debacle. The Tutsis is one of the many ethnic groups that are located in Rwanda. Basically, if you were just chilling like a villain and a government
official thought you were Tutsi, you would need to present an identification card representing you as a Tutsi or not. If you were Tutsi or regretfully
not carrying your card, you were generally killed on the spot. Overall, people are cruel and brutal for killing numerous people based on their ethnicity,

Genocide is a reality that no one can ever conquer or vanish if they are working alone or do not look at the consequences upon taking choices of
action. We as Americans feel it is our duty to only take a course of action if we know and are fully aware of the actions being made against the
people, or if we are being affected directly. If it does not affect us and we do not know about it then obviously we cannot do anything about it.
We feel that if we know what is going on and it is not directly affecting us then we will tell them to stop what they are doing and give them a "false"
threat to hopefully scare them into stopping whatever they are doing. We also feel that if we are not being directly attacked and...show more content...
Our policy also is morally correct because since we knew what was going on and we told them to stop then we wouldn't be pinned with saying we
didn't do anything to try and stop it. The impact this would have on American lives is semi–important because even though it isn't affecting our
economy or army by telling them to stop, the fact that we aren't doing nothing is not resting on our guilty conscience.
Our policy also states that if the genocide is able to be prevented then a convention will be drawn up and it will last. In the past we have had
genocidal conventions that lasted maybe 20 years and then fell apart because we did not do anything to stop what was happening. However, if we
drew up a genocidal convention, we would put forth actions to make it stay. The UN would grow stronger and the surrounding nations would be more
aware of what is happening around or near them. There would be no need for the US, however, to send troops over to be a watch out for what would
happen because the surrounding countries should have control over that. The US would contribute to the convention by assuring the people who were
attacked in the past genocidal activities would not be attacked again.
As you can see our policy is a way we can be involved without really being

What is genocide? Genocide is the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation. The word
genocide owes its existence to Raphael Lemkin, a Polish–Jewish lawyer who fled the Nazi occupation of Poland and arrived in the United States in
1941. To enter that term in the world of international law in the hopes of preventing and punishing such horrific crimes against innocent people. In
1944, he coined the term "genocide" by combining genos, the Greek word for race or tribe, with the Latin suffix cide "to kill".
In 1919, The German Workers' Party was a small political organization, group established by Anton Drexler and Karl Harrer. After Germany got
defeated in World War 1,Adolf Hitler was very agitated, because it left the nation economically depressed and politically unstable. Shortly after,
Hitler became a part of the party as a public speaker and caught many people's attention. The message Hitler was trying to get across was that it was
the Jews and Marxists fault for Germany's troubles. In July of 1921, he gained leadership of the party, which was renamed the Nationalist Socialist
German Workers' (Nazi) Party. With Adolf Hitler rises to power at this time and wanting a 'pure' Germany, he was going to take care of this problem
and get the 'pure' Germany he wanted.
Adolf Hitler was a phenomenal public speaker, and he had the people of Germany wrapped around his finger. Hitler and the Nazi

History
Genocide is a term that can be defined as a planned and systematic destruction of whole or parts of certain national, religious, race, ethnic, cultural or
political group (Akhavan 21). Genocide is deliberated with a different set of actions for a purpose to destroy an essential foundation of life. Genocide is
characterized with the massive killing of members of a group, causing mental or bodily injuries to a group of people, imposing mechanisms to prevent
birth, removing particular group children and putting conditions of life in order to bring to an end existence of a particular group. Therefore, genocide
is an illegal action and a crime recognized and punishable by international law (Charmy 35). For instance, Rwanda genocide is characterized by ethnic
tensions within the country. Initially the definition of the term genocide as by genocide convection only comprised of racial, ethnic, national and
religious groups. They argued that inclusion of other groups cannot strengthen but rather weakens it. This definition failed to recognize other groups
such as political groups, economic and cultural groups that are essential elements of genocide. Genocide therefore, is generally considered the worst
moral crime the ruling authority can commit against those it controls Naimark (2017).
Inclusion of Other Groups
Initially, the term genocide covered national, racial, ethnic and religious groups as the only groups protected by genocide convention (Naimark 41).

The Genocide In Ukraine
Hated has always been part of human nature, it is an inevitable emotion that can consumes the souls of men. The genocide in Ukraine during the early
1900s caused incredible suffering. Referred to as Holodomor which translates to killing by hunger, the Ukrainian starvation was a man made famine in
the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Ukraine and the traditional Cossack territories starved to death due to Stalin's government seizing of crops
resulting in the countries denial of the genocide and even cannibalism.

Argumentative Essay On Genocide
Genocide is one of the evillest moral crimes any ruling authority such as a government can commit against its people and it happens more than we
think. A general definition of Genocide is the intention to destroy or murder people because of their race, beliefs, or even political and economic
status. As we have been taught in this course Raphael Lemkin, created the term 'Genocide' 1944. Lemkin combined the ancient Greek word 'genos'
which means race and the Latin word 'cide' which translates to killing. There are many examples of genocide in the world but the most recognizable
is that of the Holocaust and how the German powers that be sought and attempted to kill all Jews. A recent example is the Rwandan Genocide in 1994
where the assassination of JuvГ©nal Habyarimana caused a violent reaction resulting in mass killings. In efforts to reduce Genocide, the Convention
on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (UNCG) was adopted by the United Nations in 1948 and was placed in force in 1951. On
July 1, 2002 the International Criminal Court (ICC) came into force. The ICC not only accepted the UNCG's definition of Genocide but expanded it to
include crimes against humanity such as enslavement, deportation, torture, rape, enforced disappearance and apartheid. There have been many
organizations created throughout the world to defend and prevent genocide and even communities, religions and even colleges are forming
organizations and these are just some examples of how

because the americans and the spaniards exploded in population and and they just wanted to expand for more land, Which wiped out most of these
native American groups and also made some groups go extinct. The people that targeted these groups were the Europeans, Spaniards, spain, and the
Americans. After the genocide the natives and the americans signed an agreement to fair rights and other things. The ones responsible were not
punished and the genocide is not ongoing. In 1703, Massachusetts had made the law that gave people the right to shoot any Native that they come
across. This pattern of cruelty was repeated over and over again through New England. By the 1800s, 95 percent of the Native Americans have been
killed and this genocide had taken the length of 100 years. In 1830, a year after Andrew Jackson was elected president in 1829 the United States
Congress had passed the Indian Removal Act. The act had ordered the Native Americans to be relocated in the west. Thousands of Natives from the
Southeast and Southwest were rounded up and moved to the west. The government had taken the land and had forced them to march into Kansas,

Genocide : An International Crime
Genocide is a horrific, systematic destruction of people that affects the international community because of its severity and violation of human rights.
Genocide is considered an international crime because its consequences rattle the world. Genocide can occur for many reasons. The reasons vary
from a group feeling threatened, to sending a warning to others, or to simply gain power among the community. Another reason for the occurrence of
genocide may be to gain wealth, whether it is economical or territorial. If a group sees another as a barrier between their wealth and power they will
do whatever it takes to exterminate the threat. In this paper, I will focus on the Rwandan Genocide that occurred in 1994 and the impact it had on the
victims.
Genocide was defined in 1948 by the United Nations as an international crime. Prior to the Holocaust in Nazi Germany, there was no definition for the
word genocide. The international world realized that this was a major crime that could not go unnoticed and needed to start defining and prosecuting
perpetrators. The UN identified genocide as the killing of groups, causing serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately inflicting on the group actions to
bring physical destruction, preventing births within the group, or forcibly transferring children from one group to another (Campbell, 2009). Any one
of these acts executed with the purpose to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group is

Three Examples of Genocide Essay
From the time humans existed, hatred seemed to be the dominant trait that possessed the souls of men. It was inevitable emotions could provoke
people to engage in acts without thinking; but it was the acts that were premeditated which were classified as evil and brutal. A. M. Rosenthal, the
author of No News From Auschwitz, described a single moment in history where these kinds of acts were invoked. This appalling endeavor is known
as genocide which is the deliberate destruction of a national, racial or a religious group
(Winston Dictionary). Genocide is universal rather than limited to one time and one group of people. The Catholics in Ireland were being threatened

During 1915 and 1916, one and a half million Armenians were killed. "The Armenian Genocide was masterminded by the Central Committee of the
Young Turk Party" (Armenian
Genocide). The extermination of the Armenians occurred in a systematic fashion. First the Armenians in the army were disarmed, placed into labor
battalions and then killed. Then the Armenian political and intellectual leaders were rounded up on April 24, 1915, and killed. Finally, the remaining
Armenians were called from their homes and told they would be relocated ... and then marched off to concentration camps ... in the desert ... would
starve and thirst to death in the burning sun (Armenian Genocide). To this present day, the
Turkish Government denied these allegations. They claimed the Armenians were only removed from a "war–zone." The leaders of the Young Turk
Government were found guilty of carrying out the killing by a secret network (Armenian Genocide).
The decision to eradicate the Armenians was not an impulsive decision, but "the result of extensive and profound deliberations" (Armenian Genocide).
In the case with China, genocide resulted in the extermination of the newly born female infants. Since ancient times, the Chinese have regarded the
males to be precious and more prestigious than the females. The birth of a boy signifies wealth, prosperity and luck (Chow). The Chinese Government

Unfortunately, genocide and mass killings happen in many places around the world and bring destruction to thousands of people. Genocide is the
deliberate and systematic killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation. Some genocides occur due to
small, invading groups of people, or one dictator in power who dreams of a "pure" land to rule. Others occur because of a country's own government
and the people in it who wish to change the makeup of their country. Genocide, a horrible and terrible thing, happens more often and in more places
than most people can imagine. Many individuals believe that genocide is a thing of the past, but in reality mass killings arise and transpire for years at

Buses usually brought women and children to concentration camps, or rape camps, whereas the Serbs killed men and boys of "fighting age" on the
spot or transported them to mass killing sites. In the rape camps, Serbian men raped and tortured women and girls until they became pregnant. About
20,000 rapes occurred between 1992 and 1995 (Bosnian Genocide). The imposing Serbians put thousands of people in any of the 381 concentration
camps set up around Bosnia. In the camps, people had to face inhumane living conditions, torture, beatings, and daily mass executions. Camps
"claimed the lives of around 10,000 people" in the three year long genocide (Bosnian Genocide). By then end of 1993, Serbian forces controlled nearly
three–quarters of the country (History.com). In the summer of 1995, near the end of the Bosnian Genocide, Serbian forces once again attacked, this
time in Srebrenica. The U.N. had declared the area a "safe haven," but the Serbians came in anyway. They repeated their usual actions, sending
women and girls to rape or concentration camps, and killing men and boys on the spot. The approximation of "Bosniaks killed by Serb forces at

pure Serbian title. The attack on Srebrenica "was the single largest massacre in Europe since World War II" (Bosnian

Genocide Persuasive Essay
Genocide, it is human nature to want power over all and to want control. While this is true is it possible for the world to come together to solve the
problem of genocide? Genocide has been happening since as early as 1915 with that being the genocide of Armenians. With this in mind, genocide
doesn't just appear out of nowhere. The person who starts the whole thing has to start it off slowly because he can't show the signs of it. However,
now we know what the signs are so we can now stop it from the beginning and give the person trying to start it some help. With this in mind the
question is "Can the world resolve the problem of genocide?" Now, the definition of genocide is collective destruction of an entire human group based
on religion or ethnicity. Also, the definition of...show more content...
As stated in Document B "it took a total of four decades to finally come together to prosecute the crime of genocide." Because of this statement it
also proves that it may take extremely long to prosecute something that can happen decades ago. With this people may cause genocide knowing
that there will be no immediate punishment. It is because of this that i don't understand why the UN takes so long to solve the problem. If it is
such a big deal why can't we all come together sooner to give punishment sooner as well. Is the UN stating that there is no hope and that we have
to push it aside to whenever there can be? Because at this rate there will never be any. Now you may say that in this document it also states that the
new slogan had changed to "never again" with their being teaching of wrong from right, however; if it is never again then why has there been
genocides still happening with the most recent one taking place in Sudan 2003. With there being 300,000 deaths and displacing over 2 million
people. If we want it to be never again why didn't we stop it as soon as

It is part of the human condition to fight for dominance, part of the will of man. From the beginning of time, one race/group/person must be on top,
one must rule them all. But what happens when that fight for dominance goes too far. How can it be stopped? Should it be stopped? And who has the
right to say? Genocide is a term first defined in 1944 by a Jewish lawyer seeking to describe the horrendous acts committed against his brethren. Taking
the Greek root genos, meaning tribe, and the Latin suffix cide, meaning killing, this word became real–and powerful too. While this word never existed
before this man seeking to define an action, it was not the first instance of the crime. The first believed genocide took place in 146 B.C. in Carthage

With Liberalism, humanitarian aide is a must–they believe in the importance of helping others, of the world being good and just, and a closeness
found just by being a living thing on this earth. With Realism, aide is to be given only if something is received in return–they wish to dominate and be
known, to survive in this world. This paper itself was written from a realist point of view, for it is the basis of the natural world...at least when it
applies to genocide and the hate that surrounds this place. Much like Realism, Constructivism and Marxism can explain why (or if) they should
provide humanitarian aid. In the case of Marxism, aide is to be given if it enhances their economic standing (this can be seen as parallel to realism as
it too can increase their dominance), if it allows them to flourish and gain. Constructivism, however, can be split and torn between a side of Liberalism
and Realism. Constructivism dictates that if there is a strong relationship between the two actors (i.e. Kantian culture) then aide must be given as
everyone has a right to life and a general well–being. If the strong relationship is lacking (i.e. Lockean or Hobbesian culture) then aide will probably
be withheld as well–being is generally ignored and, in the most extreme circumstances, no one is trusted (sovereignty isn't respected). All of these
theories can explain the decision to give or forgo aide, allowing many different opinions and views on the

Also, religious leaders like monks, and Christian missionaries would be killed. These victims would be persecuted, because they went against the
ideals of communism, like the professionals and intellectuals being educated, the monks and missionaries being religious, and minorities going
against Pol Pot's idea of a "pure" Cambodian society. The genocide's process and method of killing was through prisons and killing fields. The
urban city dweller population was evacuated to the countryside, those who were elderly, frail, disabled, basically incapable of making the journey,
and those who seemed to be against the new regime were killed on the spot. When the rest of the people reached the countryside they were forced to
do farm work in an effort to put society back to an agrarian society starting at year zero. Many people would also die of starvation, malnutrition, and
disease or for committing supposed crimes. Prison were also used, such as the now infamous prison S–21, that was once a high school that was used
for some of the most brutal and gruesome killings. It was used to interrogate people and force people into admitting to having committed crimes. It was
used from mid1975 to 1979. Approximately 17,000 people were killed here. People were forced into admitting to crimes through torture techniques,
such as hanging, drowning, electric shock, and other methods. The prisoners were well documented,

A Reflection On Genocide
Genocide Reflection Essay Though genocide is a very real grim reality of our world today, more real to some than others, I do believe that the United
States must adopt a mostly non–interventionist position on most foreign affairs. Personally, I do believe that genocide is an absolute evil that plagues
our world. However, it is not our job to police the world. Not only that, but the burden it brings upon the US to voluntarily intervene outweighs the
good. It is morso the responsibility of other regional/global organizations such as the UN, and NATO (though I am very skeptical and critical of the
UN, but that is for another time) to intervene than it is the single nation of the United States of America. Rather than having to focus on international
affairs, we should focus moreso on ourselves. Policing the world is expensive. Not just in terms of money but potentially in terms of lives of our
soldiers. For example, the United States adopted a containment policy during the Cold War where we would try to stop Communism from spreading,
even if it meant that we would physically step in. For the most part, we propped up right–wing dictators but, a good example of action sending in
soldiers would be Vietnam. It is because that we decided to police the world that we ended up losing about 550,000 men. Other estimates include that
what would be a trillion dollars today was spent on the Vietnam war. This skepticism to getting foreign intervention has been deemed "Vietnam
Syndrome" by former President Ronald Reagan. I present this case as an example as how attempting to police the world and getting involved in
military conflicts proves to be a burden on our nation. If the US were to intervene in genocide, it would have to be through military force.
Theoretically, this could be done without sending ground troops, suggested by some as a resolution the our Syria woes, without sending in ground
troops. However, the cost of intervening is more than I'd like to spend of the taxpayer's dollar, especially since using the taxpayer's dollar in this case
would not be used in his/hers best interest but rather in the best interest of the victims of the genocide. The United States' military budget for the fiscal

Harmony turned power hungry. The Tutsis, tall warrior people, invaded the homeland of the Hutu farmers. The Tutsis had fewer numbers. Yet, they still

considered an act punishable. For people to understand the severity of their actions, their actions must have serious consequences. These consequences
must be so extreme to the relevance to the act punishable that those who are planning on partaking in a similar act are made well aware of the
possible punishments. If people are better educated on the subject of genocide, the reports of genocidal cases might decrease, making genocide a less
extreme problem not only in the United States, but the entire world.
The world organization that concerns itself with issues parallel to genocide is the Commission on Human Rights. It is the commission's duty to meet
once a genocidal act occurred and was reported. Then the commission must develop different ways to mend the problem at task in a fair and just way.
By doing so, the commission helps to fix this human right's issue with the seven treaties.
The Commission On Human Rights has set up seven treaties that

Causes Of Genocide Essay

  • 1. Causes of Genocide Essay Genocide is an action that is not unique to any one set of specific circumstances. It knows no bounds of time or location. From thousands or years ago to present day and on every civilized continent, the eradication of entire groups of people has occurred. The current definition of genocide was established by the United Nations in 1948: "(a) Killing members of [a] group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group" "with intent to destroy, in whole or in ...show more content... Perhaps one of the most relevant examples of genocide denial is in the United States' history. It is estimated that in 1500 there were some 12 million Native Americans living in North America, but by 1900 this number had been reduced to 237,000 (Lewy). Yet while mass murders of American Indians were all too common during this time period, Ward Churchill, in his book A Little Matter ofGenocide: Holocaust and Denial in the Americas 1492 to the Present, explains discussion of these occurrences is limited in early education and the media to only a few events such as the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre and the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre so they may be dismissed as anomalies (2). He also explains that this denial is furthered in two more fashions. The first is the underestimation of the number of Native Americans living in North American prior to European colonization because "the deaths of people who never existed need not be explained" (2). The second is the image of the "warlike" and "aggressive" American Indian, which permits the murders of such savages to be portrayed as defensive and necessary when the true source of Native American aggression was more likely due to settlers ceaselessly encroaching on their homelands (3). Churchill likens this scenario to a hypothetical German victory during World War II, "When the Poles, led by sullen Jewish chiefs, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Genocide Argumentative Essay Genocide, it is not just murder, it is extermination. The world has lost an abounding amount of lives due to the vicious acts of genocide. There have been many 'preventive' measures being performed such as the conference in Montreal held in 2007. At said conference the United Nations (officials) not only spoke about preventing genocide, they also listened to 75 year–old, Marika Nene. Nene experienced the anti–gypsy massacres that occurred during World War II. "I had no choice. I had to give myself up to the soldiers (...) they violated me. I still have nightmares about it." Genocide has affected millions of lives and Marika Nene is just one of them. Many have often inquired the following question, 'can the world resolve the problem of genocide?'...show more content... In simpler words, we people are evil and automatically judge others by their characteristics with absolutely no mercy. Of course not everyone goes as far as performing mass killings, but people do evaluate others on the most minute and basic features a person obtains. Classifying others by their appearance is what eventually leads to massacres and 'ethnic cleansing.' 'Ethnic cleansing' is a softer term used in replacement of 'eliminating a portion of an ethnic group to get others to evacuate.' Bosnia is one country guilty of committing this act. "(...) genocidal acts were used to attempt to instill the fear and devastation necessary to get the Muslims to leave their land and take refuge elsewhere, but that complete extermination was never the goal," said by Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University. Another wicked performance of genocide was the 'Tutsis in Rwanda' debacle. The Tutsis is one of the many ethnic groups that are located in Rwanda. Basically, if you were just chilling like a villain and a government official thought you were Tutsi, you would need to present an identification card representing you as a Tutsi or not. If you were Tutsi or regretfully not carrying your card, you were generally killed on the spot. Overall, people are cruel and brutal for killing numerous people based on their ethnicity, but Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Genocide Essay Genocide is a reality that no one can ever conquer or vanish if they are working alone or do not look at the consequences upon taking choices of action. We as Americans feel it is our duty to only take a course of action if we know and are fully aware of the actions being made against the people, or if we are being affected directly. If it does not affect us and we do not know about it then obviously we cannot do anything about it. We feel that if we know what is going on and it is not directly affecting us then we will tell them to stop what they are doing and give them a "false" threat to hopefully scare them into stopping whatever they are doing. We also feel that if we are not being directly attacked and...show more content... Our policy also is morally correct because since we knew what was going on and we told them to stop then we wouldn't be pinned with saying we didn't do anything to try and stop it. The impact this would have on American lives is semi–important because even though it isn't affecting our economy or army by telling them to stop, the fact that we aren't doing nothing is not resting on our guilty conscience. Our policy also states that if the genocide is able to be prevented then a convention will be drawn up and it will last. In the past we have had genocidal conventions that lasted maybe 20 years and then fell apart because we did not do anything to stop what was happening. However, if we drew up a genocidal convention, we would put forth actions to make it stay. The UN would grow stronger and the surrounding nations would be more aware of what is happening around or near them. There would be no need for the US, however, to send troops over to be a watch out for what would happen because the surrounding countries should have control over that. The US would contribute to the convention by assuring the people who were attacked in the past genocidal activities would not be attacked again. As you can see our policy is a way we can be involved without really being Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Genocide Essay What is genocide? Genocide is the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation. The word genocide owes its existence to Raphael Lemkin, a Polish–Jewish lawyer who fled the Nazi occupation of Poland and arrived in the United States in 1941. To enter that term in the world of international law in the hopes of preventing and punishing such horrific crimes against innocent people. In 1944, he coined the term "genocide" by combining genos, the Greek word for race or tribe, with the Latin suffix cide "to kill". In 1919, The German Workers' Party was a small political organization, group established by Anton Drexler and Karl Harrer. After Germany got defeated in World War 1,Adolf Hitler was very agitated, because it left the nation economically depressed and politically unstable. Shortly after, Hitler became a part of the party as a public speaker and caught many people's attention. The message Hitler was trying to get across was that it was the Jews and Marxists fault for Germany's troubles. In July of 1921, he gained leadership of the party, which was renamed the Nationalist Socialist German Workers' (Nazi) Party. With Adolf Hitler rises to power at this time and wanting a 'pure' Germany, he was going to take care of this problem and get the 'pure' Germany he wanted. Adolf Hitler was a phenomenal public speaker, and he had the people of Germany wrapped around his finger. Hitler and the Nazi Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Genocide Genocide History Genocide is a term that can be defined as a planned and systematic destruction of whole or parts of certain national, religious, race, ethnic, cultural or political group (Akhavan 21). Genocide is deliberated with a different set of actions for a purpose to destroy an essential foundation of life. Genocide is characterized with the massive killing of members of a group, causing mental or bodily injuries to a group of people, imposing mechanisms to prevent birth, removing particular group children and putting conditions of life in order to bring to an end existence of a particular group. Therefore, genocide is an illegal action and a crime recognized and punishable by international law (Charmy 35). For instance, Rwanda genocide is characterized by ethnic tensions within the country. Initially the definition of the term genocide as by genocide convection only comprised of racial, ethnic, national and religious groups. They argued that inclusion of other groups cannot strengthen but rather weakens it. This definition failed to recognize other groups such as political groups, economic and cultural groups that are essential elements of genocide. Genocide therefore, is generally considered the worst moral crime the ruling authority can commit against those it controls Naimark (2017). Inclusion of Other Groups Initially, the term genocide covered national, racial, ethnic and religious groups as the only groups protected by genocide convention (Naimark 41). • 6. The Genocide In Ukraine Hated has always been part of human nature, it is an inevitable emotion that can consumes the souls of men. The genocide in Ukraine during the early 1900s caused incredible suffering. Referred to as Holodomor which translates to killing by hunger, the Ukrainian starvation was a man made famine in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Ukraine and the traditional Cossack territories starved to death due to Stalin's government seizing of crops resulting in the countries denial of the genocide and even cannibalism. • 7. Argumentative Essay On Genocide Genocide is one of the evillest moral crimes any ruling authority such as a government can commit against its people and it happens more than we think. A general definition of Genocide is the intention to destroy or murder people because of their race, beliefs, or even political and economic status. As we have been taught in this course Raphael Lemkin, created the term 'Genocide' 1944. Lemkin combined the ancient Greek word 'genos' which means race and the Latin word 'cide' which translates to killing. There are many examples of genocide in the world but the most recognizable is that of the Holocaust and how the German powers that be sought and attempted to kill all Jews. A recent example is the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 where the assassination of JuvГ©nal Habyarimana caused a violent reaction resulting in mass killings. In efforts to reduce Genocide, the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (UNCG) was adopted by the United Nations in 1948 and was placed in force in 1951. On July 1, 2002 the International Criminal Court (ICC) came into force. The ICC not only accepted the UNCG's definition of Genocide but expanded it to include crimes against humanity such as enslavement, deportation, torture, rape, enforced disappearance and apartheid. There have been many organizations created throughout the world to defend and prevent genocide and even communities, religions and even colleges are forming organizations and these are just some examples of how Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Native American Genocide Essay Native American Genocide project Essential Question: Why do terrible things happen and what can be done about it? The genocide I want to research is the Native American. I would like to research this because I have always been interested in Natives/Indians since I was little and I want to know how cruel it was for the Natives and why the Americans wanted to kill them and use them as slaves. Many people have said that the natives have had the worst genocide of them all. The Natives Culture, land, Natural resources, and their very lives were taken away from them. As wave after wave of the Europeans came to America, all of the natives were forced off of their land. Fifty years after Christopher Columbus had landed in the Bahamas, the...show more content... Since the Natives stood in the way of unlimited access to North America, the english said that they had to be eliminated, and so they were. There is no Exact place that this Genocide had taken place. The targeted Native American groups are Aztec, Arawaks, TaГ no, Creek, and more. They were targeted because the americans and the spaniards exploded in population and and they just wanted to expand for more land, Which wiped out most of these native American groups and also made some groups go extinct. The people that targeted these groups were the Europeans, Spaniards, spain, and the Americans. After the genocide the natives and the americans signed an agreement to fair rights and other things. The ones responsible were not punished and the genocide is not ongoing. In 1703, Massachusetts had made the law that gave people the right to shoot any Native that they come across. This pattern of cruelty was repeated over and over again through New England. By the 1800s, 95 percent of the Native Americans have been killed and this genocide had taken the length of 100 years. In 1830, a year after Andrew Jackson was elected president in 1829 the United States Congress had passed the Indian Removal Act. The act had ordered the Native Americans to be relocated in the west. Thousands of Natives from the Southeast and Southwest were rounded up and moved to the west. • 9. Genocide : An International Crime Genocide is a horrific, systematic destruction of people that affects the international community because of its severity and violation of human rights. Genocide is considered an international crime because its consequences rattle the world. Genocide can occur for many reasons. The reasons vary from a group feeling threatened, to sending a warning to others, or to simply gain power among the community. Another reason for the occurrence of genocide may be to gain wealth, whether it is economical or territorial. If a group sees another as a barrier between their wealth and power they will do whatever it takes to exterminate the threat. In this paper, I will focus on the Rwandan Genocide that occurred in 1994 and the impact it had on the victims. Genocide was defined in 1948 by the United Nations as an international crime. Prior to the Holocaust in Nazi Germany, there was no definition for the word genocide. The international world realized that this was a major crime that could not go unnoticed and needed to start defining and prosecuting perpetrators. The UN identified genocide as the killing of groups, causing serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately inflicting on the group actions to bring physical destruction, preventing births within the group, or forcibly transferring children from one group to another (Campbell, 2009). Any one of these acts executed with the purpose to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Three Examples of Genocide Essay From the time humans existed, hatred seemed to be the dominant trait that possessed the souls of men. It was inevitable emotions could provoke people to engage in acts without thinking; but it was the acts that were premeditated which were classified as evil and brutal. A. M. Rosenthal, the author of No News From Auschwitz, described a single moment in history where these kinds of acts were invoked. This appalling endeavor is known as genocide which is the deliberate destruction of a national, racial or a religious group (Winston Dictionary). Genocide is universal rather than limited to one time and one group of people. The Catholics in Ireland were being threatened and eliminated by the Puritans. First the Armenians in the army were disarmed, placed into labor battalions and then killed. Then the Armenian political and intellectual leaders were rounded up on April 24, 1915, and killed. Finally, the remaining Armenians were called from their homes and told they would be relocated ... and then marched off to concentration camps ... in the desert ... would starve and thirst to death in the burning sun (Armenian Genocide). To this present day, the Turkish Government denied these allegations. They claimed the Armenians were only removed from a "war–zone." The leaders of the Young Turk Government were found guilty of carrying out the killing by a secret network (Armenian Genocide). The decision to eradicate the Armenians was not an impulsive decision, but "the result of extensive and profound deliberations" (Armenian Genocide). In the case with China, genocide resulted in the extermination of the newly born female infants. Since ancient times, the Chinese have regarded the males to be precious and more prestigious than the females. The birth of a boy signifies wealth, prosperity and luck (Chow). • 11. Genocide Essay Unfortunately, genocide and mass killings happen in many places around the world and bring destruction to thousands of people. Genocide is the deliberate and systematic killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation. Some genocides occur due to small, invading groups of people, or one dictator in power who dreams of a "pure" land to rule. Others occur because of a country's own government and the people in it who wish to change the makeup of their country. Genocide, a horrible and terrible thing, happens more often and in more places than most people can imagine. Many individuals believe that genocide is a thing of the past, but in reality mass killings arise and transpire for years at a time...show more content... Buses usually brought women and children to concentration camps, or rape camps, whereas the Serbs killed men and boys of "fighting age" on the spot or transported them to mass killing sites. In the rape camps, Serbian men raped and tortured women and girls until they became pregnant. About 20,000 rapes occurred between 1992 and 1995 (Bosnian Genocide). The imposing Serbians put thousands of people in any of the 381 concentration camps set up around Bosnia. In the camps, people had to face inhumane living conditions, torture, beatings, and daily mass executions. Camps "claimed the lives of around 10,000 people" in the three year long genocide (Bosnian Genocide). By then end of 1993, Serbian forces controlled nearly three–quarters of the country (History.com). In the summer of 1995, near the end of the Bosnian Genocide, Serbian forces once again attacked, this time in Srebrenica. The U.N. had declared the area a "safe haven," but the Serbians came in anyway. They repeated their usual actions, sending women and girls to rape or concentration camps, and killing men and boys on the spot. The approximation of "Bosniaks killed by Serb forces at Srebrenica range from around 7,000 to more than 8,000" (History.com). The Serbians had no remorse, and killed anyone they felt did not fit under the pure Serbian title. Throughout history groups of people have been killed by ruling powers, but the unlawful acts went without title until recent events in the 1940Кјs. The mass killings in Germany activated against the Jews created a new word, genocide. "Genocide refers to the widespread murder and other acts committed by governments or other groups with the intent to destroy – in whole or in part– a national, racial, religious or ethnic group" (Choices Program 1). This definition was placed by international governments, but the word was developed by a single man in response to the Holocaust. Many lives couldКјve been saved if America had helped to end the Holocaust, but it chose to avoid the involvement. The world closed its eyes, closed its ears, and turned its back on what was happening (Rusesabagina 98). The Holocaust went on for years and people couldКјve chosen to investigate, but instead they left it to its undoing. World War II and the Holocaust was the result of harsh conditions in Germany after the conclusion of World War I. The war "ended in disaster for the German nation...not only the economy, but the spirit of the country was destroyed by the Versailles Treaty of 1919" (Rossel 9). The rules set up for Germany were unfair because fault for war cannot be placed on a single country. More problems arose in the 1930Кјs when the Depression spread. • 13. Genocide Persuasive Essay Genocide, it is human nature to want power over all and to want control. While this is true is it possible for the world to come together to solve the problem of genocide? Genocide has been happening since as early as 1915 with that being the genocide of Armenians. With this in mind, genocide doesn't just appear out of nowhere. The person who starts the whole thing has to start it off slowly because he can't show the signs of it. However, now we know what the signs are so we can now stop it from the beginning and give the person trying to start it some help. With this in mind the question is "Can the world resolve the problem of genocide?" Now, the definition of genocide is collective destruction of an entire human group based on religion or ethnicity. Also, the definition of...show more content... As stated in Document B "it took a total of four decades to finally come together to prosecute the crime of genocide." Because of this statement it also proves that it may take extremely long to prosecute something that can happen decades ago. With this people may cause genocide knowing that there will be no immediate punishment. It is because of this that i don't understand why the UN takes so long to solve the problem. If it is such a big deal why can't we all come together sooner to give punishment sooner as well. Is the UN stating that there is no hope and that we have to push it aside to whenever there can be? Because at this rate there will never be any. Now you may say that in this document it also states that the new slogan had changed to "never again" with their being teaching of wrong from right, however; if it is never again then why has there been genocides still happening with the most recent one taking place in Sudan 2003. With there being 300,000 deaths and displacing over 2 million people. If we want it to be never again why didn't we stop it as soon as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Genocide In Sociology It is part of the human condition to fight for dominance, part of the will of man. From the beginning of time, one race/group/person must be on top, one must rule them all. But what happens when that fight for dominance goes too far. How can it be stopped? Should it be stopped? And who has the right to say? Genocide is a term first defined in 1944 by a Jewish lawyer seeking to describe the horrendous acts committed against his brethren. Taking the Greek root genos, meaning tribe, and the Latin suffix cide, meaning killing, this word became real–and powerful too. While this word never existed before this man seeking to define an action, it was not the first instance of the crime. The first believed genocide took place in 146 B.C. in Carthage ...show more content... With Liberalism, humanitarian aide is a must–they believe in the importance of helping others, of the world being good and just, and a closeness found just by being a living thing on this earth. With Realism, aide is to be given only if something is received in return–they wish to dominate and be known, to survive in this world. This paper itself was written from a realist point of view, for it is the basis of the natural world...at least when it applies to genocide and the hate that surrounds this place. Much like Realism, Constructivism and Marxism can explain why (or if) they should provide humanitarian aid. In the case of Marxism, aide is to be given if it enhances their economic standing (this can be seen as parallel to realism as it too can increase their dominance), if it allows them to flourish and gain. Constructivism, however, can be split and torn between a side of Liberalism and Realism. Constructivism dictates that if there is a strong relationship between the two actors (i.e. Kantian culture) then aide must be given as everyone has a right to life and a general well–being. If the strong relationship is lacking (i.e. Lockean or Hobbesian culture) then aide will probably be withheld as well–being is generally ignored and, in the most extreme circumstances, no one is trusted (sovereignty isn't respected). All of these theories can explain the decision to give or forgo aide, allowing many different opinions and views on the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

(Funk) This is significant, because the Holocaust would mark a turning point, in how the world would view such actions. Where, they were no longer willing to accept such behavior, to achieve territorial or political objectives. At which point, they would enact the United Nations Convention Against Genocide in 1948. This would define the act of genocide by indentifying the actions that members of military forces or those involved in conflict will engage in to include:"The acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, national, ethnic, racial or religious group, including (a) killing members of the group; (b) causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group (c) deliberate inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. The Cambodian Genocide Essay The Cambodian Genocide took place from 1975 to 1979 in the Southeastern Asian country of Cambodia. The genocide was a brutal massacre that killed 1.4 to 2.2 million people, about 21% of Cambodia's population. This essay, will discuss the history of the Cambodian genocide, specifically, what happened, the victims and the perpetrators and the world's response to the genocide. The Cambodian Genocide has the historical context of the Vietnam War and the country's own civil war. During the Vietnam War, leading up to the conflicts that would contribute to the genocide, Cambodia was used as a U.S. battleground for the Vietnam War. Cambodia would become a battle ground for American troops fighting in Vietnam for four years; the war would kill up...show more content... Also, religious leaders like monks, and Christian missionaries would be killed. These victims would be persecuted, because they went against the ideals of communism, like the professionals and intellectuals being educated, the monks and missionaries being religious, and minorities going against Pol Pot's idea of a "pure" Cambodian society. The genocide's process and method of killing was through prisons and killing fields. The urban city dweller population was evacuated to the countryside, those who were elderly, frail, disabled, basically incapable of making the journey, and those who seemed to be against the new regime were killed on the spot. When the rest of the people reached the countryside they were forced to do farm work in an effort to put society back to an agrarian society starting at year zero. Many people would also die of starvation, malnutrition, and disease or for committing supposed crimes. Prison were also used, such as the now infamous prison S–21, that was once a high school that was used for some of the most brutal and gruesome killings. It was used to interrogate people and force people into admitting to having committed crimes. It was used from mid1975 to 1979. Approximately 17,000 people were killed here. People were forced into admitting to crimes through torture techniques, such as hanging, drowning, electric shock, and other methods. • 17. A Reflection On Genocide Genocide Reflection Essay Though genocide is a very real grim reality of our world today, more real to some than others, I do believe that the United States must adopt a mostly non–interventionist position on most foreign affairs. Personally, I do believe that genocide is an absolute evil that plagues our world. However, it is not our job to police the world. Not only that, but the burden it brings upon the US to voluntarily intervene outweighs the good. It is morso the responsibility of other regional/global organizations such as the UN, and NATO (though I am very skeptical and critical of the UN, but that is for another time) to intervene than it is the single nation of the United States of America. Rather than having to focus on international affairs, we should focus moreso on ourselves. Policing the world is expensive. Not just in terms of money but potentially in terms of lives of our soldiers. For example, the United States adopted a containment policy during the Cold War where we would try to stop Communism from spreading, even if it meant that we would physically step in. For the most part, we propped up right–wing dictators but, a good example of action sending in soldiers would be Vietnam. It is because that we decided to police the world that we ended up losing about 550,000 men. Other estimates include that what would be a trillion dollars today was spent on the Vietnam war. This skepticism to getting foreign intervention has been deemed "Vietnam Syndrome" by former President Ronald Reagan. I present this case as an example as how attempting to police the world and getting involved in military conflicts proves to be a burden on our nation. If the US were to intervene in genocide, it would have to be through military force. Theoretically, this could be done without sending ground troops, suggested by some as a resolution the our Syria woes, without sending in ground troops. However, the cost of intervening is more than I'd like to spend of the taxpayer's dollar, especially since using the taxpayer's dollar in this case would not be used in his/hers best interest but rather in the best interest of the victims of the genocide. The United States' military budget for the fiscal year 2017 is about Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The Tutsis had fewer numbers. Yet, they still conquered the Hutus. There was a compromise: if the Tutsis raised the crops the Hutus would in turn protect them. They lived as one, spoke the same language, and intermarried. However, when Belgium withdrew their troops a power vacuum spread rapidly throughout the rugged Rwandan plains. The Tutsis and Hutus civil war turned into a mass genocide that lasted for months. Some 600 years after, the Hutus pushed aside theTutsi and finally regained their rightfully deserved control. The Tutsis who held military power inherited it from the colonia lpower and don't want to share fully with the Hutus. A news reporter stated, "The German and Belgian invaders shrewdly manipulated the Tutsi and Hutu with the age–old, highly effective "divide and rule" strategy." If the Tutsis and Hutus had been educated they would have realized that. If they had a higher education they could have run for office, instead of electing a king. They were smart enough to form an army, train children with deadly weapons, and kill millions of people. The only difference between the two groups is economical, rather than ethical. Once they began the assassinations they could not stop the slaughter. At first the Hutus were victims of the atrocity, but once they regained power terror struck down on the Tutsis. All the unfair distribution of resources such as, wealth, and education powered their fight. • 19. genocide Essay Genocide is an extremely broad subject with various different definitions. Genocide could be one or more leaders trying to get rid of a large group of people by killings or attacks, or it can be against a smaller group of people in a less violent manner. Genocide has been a very extreme problem in society and various reports of genocidal events have been recorded in history, but how does one go about finding the precise and accurate definition of a "genocide"? Genocidal acts are placed into different categories and are defined in different degrees. The Commission on Human Rights has set up seven treaties that describe acts of genocide. Regardless of committees' attempts to limit or abolish acts of genocide, genocide was a very important ...show more content... Once they have the items deemed necessary, it is more likely for these acts to become more violent and more destructive, depending on the amount of items palpable. This being said, weapons being more prevalent in the twentieth century have lead to an increase of genocidal acts in society. Genocide is an important human rights issue. When a person or persons take it into their hands to violate someone's given rights, it should be considered an act punishable. For people to understand the severity of their actions, their actions must have serious consequences. These consequences must be so extreme to the relevance to the act punishable that those who are planning on partaking in a similar act are made well aware of the possible punishments. If people are better educated on the subject of genocide, the reports of genocidal cases might decrease, making genocide a less extreme problem not only in the United States, but the entire world. The world organization that concerns itself with issues parallel to genocide is the Commission on Human Rights. It is the commission's duty to meet once a genocidal act occurred and was reported. Then the commission must develop different ways to mend the problem at task in a fair and just way. By doing so, the commission helps to fix this human right's issue with the seven treaties.
