Marijuana is a plant called Cannabis sativa that contains THC which causes its psychoactive effects. It became federally illegal in 1937 under the Marihuana Tax Act, though some states had already banned it earlier. Currently, 14 states have legalized medical marijuana and 14 more are considering similar laws as there is a growing trend of states legalizing it for medical purposes.
