Birth
John Lewis was born to Eddie and Willie Mae Lewis on
February 21, 1940 in Troy, Alabama.
Family
John Lewis had six siblings (Adolph, Grant, John-Miles,
Edward, William, and Ethel Lewis). John’s father was a
sharecropper, his mother was a Stay-at-Home mom and
both were strongly rooted into religion.
Education
John Lewis began his education as the first to graduate
high school in his family. After his high school education
he attended the American Baptist Theological Seminary to
fulfill his dream of becoming a pastor. Lewis also attended
Fisk University, but, unfortunately dropped out because of
the Civil Rights Movement. Eventually, Lewis did return
to Fisk University and received his B.A. in Religion and
Philosophy.

Not only did Lewis’s actions receive awards but his writing
did as well. John awarded with the #1 New York Times
bestselling graphic novel memoir trilogy, MARCH. Book
One of MARCH received an ALA Notable Children’s Book
designation, a 2014 American Library Association (ALA)
Coretta Scott King Book Award Author Honor, and also
named one of the best books of 2013 by The Washington
Post, Boston Globe, USA Today, Publishers Weekly and
many more.
Early Life Lewis’s leadership personality obtained him positions as
Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating
Committee (SNCC), Director of the Voter Education
Project (VEP), U.S. Representative of Georgia’s Fifth
Congressional District. He serves as the Democratic Party
Senior Chief Deputy Whip in the House, member of the
House Ways and Means Committee, and a ranking
member of its subcommittees on Income Security and
Family Support an on Oversight.

Goals
John Lewis’s main goal was to have justice for the
African American People. Also with hearing all of Martin
Luther King Jr.’s sermons on the radio, John Lewis
aspired to be a minister and follow in Dr. King’s footsteps.
Challenges
John Lewis faced his biggest challenge finding a way to
get equal civil rights for African American citizens living
in the United States.

Including Lewis’s numerous national and international
awards, he has received over 50 honorary degrees
from distinguished colleges and universities in the
United States such as, Howard University, Morehouse
College, Harvard University, Princeton University and
many more leading colleges and universities.
Achievements
John Lewis’s greatest achievement was getting equal
voting rights for African American citizens in the
United States after years of fighting.
