EXECUTIVE
SUMMARY
Our Mission
To help the homeless help themselves by
developing and encouraging skills and so build a
safe, self supporting, sustainable integrated
community for a family to grow up.
Problem
• In Hinckley in 2013/14 808 people sought advice concerning homelessness
• At the end of 2013, 15 households were homeless and in temporary accommodation
• 6,200 are homeless in the East Midlands and nationally 102,000
• A homeless person is admitted to hospital nationally every 3 hours putting strain on NHS
• 65% of households accepted as “Statutory Homeless” included dependent children
• 8% included a pregnant woman. 1,200 on waiting list in Leicester
Our Vision
Existing Housing Associations already provide accommodation but do not provide a “Holistic Solution”.
Looking at the “Wheel of Life” diagram below, it can be seen how we intend to provide a more balanced
approach.
We aim to achieve this by…
• Using land identified by the local council to build eco-friendly passiv haus where possible
• Using existing grants, loans and funding
• Use recycling wherever possible, materials, rainwater, solar power, heat pumps
• Identifying suitable families with council help who will “buy in” to the dream, number dependent on land
• Getting the families to come together to construct at least 75% of the completion work
• The work is to be shared out with everyone working on the entire project
• Using this approach the families will form a community in which they all have a vested interest
• This will also allow skills to be learnt & references obtained which can be transferred at completion
• This will turn net users of council resources to net contributors to council resources
• Working closely with academic establishments to maximise resources
• Creating community garden projects and gleaning groups, will facilitate integration in the wider community
• Contentment + fulfilment + confidence + community integration = happiness
