2. Final Destination 1

In the opening for Final Destination 1, we see a close up of the wing with smoke coming
out of it. This suggests to the audience that there will be some trouble with the wing
which the people on the plane may not be aware of.
•
Early on in the clip, crosscutting is used between the main character looking out of the
window, to the close up of the wing of the plane and back to the reaction of the
character. This foreshadows the events that are about to take place to the audience as
we see what the characters may not, in this case, the wing malfunctioning.
3. •
We also see a wide shot of the
passengers on the plane which shows
them in a cheery mood and
celebrating that the plane has taken
off. However this contrasts with the
close up of the main character with a
worried expression on his face which
suggests to the audience that
something bad is about to happen as
his reaction is different to the other
passengers.
•
As an audience we get the feeling that
something bad may happen as we see
more of the main character than the
rest of the people on the plane.
Therefore we get the feeling of his
reaction having more importance than
the other passengers.
4. •
In this scene, we also see the plane taking
off. However the weather in this scene is
dark and rainy which foreshadows that
bad events will take place. As the main
character looks out of the plane’s window,
we see the streaks of rain running along
the screen/window which suggests the
speed of the plane. We then cut to
another shot of the main characters face
which emphasises the fear in him

We then see the plane taking off in a wide
shot which shows the dark clouds and
dark night sky. This use of pathetic fallacy
builds up the tension for the audience in
the opening scene as us as an audience
know that travelling in bad weather
conditions is not good which makes them
want to watch as we want to see what
happens to the plane.
5. •
As the events continue, the sense of panic
is shown through the use of the handheld
camera shots. The use of the handheld
shot creates a bigger sense of realism for
the audience as the movements of the
plane are shown in the way the camera
moves about as if you were on the plane
itself and therefore creates tension which
draws the audience in even more.

The passengers also seem to look more
panicked as the plane starts to move more
which in turn gets the audience asking
“what will happen?”
6. •
After the brief moment of panic, we are
shown a wide shot of the plane which
shows the small confined space that
the passengers are in with no real
escape route if anything happens. At
this moment we also see the lights
turned on and the plane becomes still
again which suggests things are “back
to normal”. This feeling of normality is
also emphasised through the shots
becoming longer and less fast paced.
•
The plane suddenly falls dark and the
plane starts to shake again. This reengages the sense of panic amongst the
passengers and also the audience. The
darkness is used to show the real life
events on the plane but the darkness
could also symbolise a sense of
‘unknowing’ which puts us in a state of
unease.
7. •
As the scene comes to a close, the
camera starts to tilt dramatically which
disorientates the audience.
•
The editing at this stage also becomes
quicker which shows the fast paced
events unfolding. The fast paced editing
here contrasts with the slower editing
that was used at the beginning of the
clip when then atmosphere is calm.
•
The editing also creates a sense of
confusion as the clips become shorter,
more disorientated and less is visible.
This creates the situation the
passengers would be in for the
audience as the realism is brought to
them.
