Our local ladies came out in droves to support the
#nomakeupselfie internet craze that swept the
nation.
Ladies everywhere proved they were natural
beauties by wiping off their make-up to raise
money, and awareness, for Cancer Research UK.
Everyone who took off their make-up and
shared their pictures on Facebook donated money
to the charity that has raised several million
nationwide.
Here our brave local beauties tell us why they
dared to bare...

“I lost my beautiful
mother to cancer”
“My friend battled
cancer for years”
Anna McCauley, 45, Portstewart
Anna says: “I lost a friend to cancer. Beth Calnan
died two weeks before her 38th birthday, leaving
behind two young children.
“It was a long battle, but one she kept winning
over and over as the cancer kept fighting back in
different parts of her body. In the end cancer won.
It spread to her brain and despite the doctors doing
their best, they couldn’t prolong her life any further.
Although she was suffering, Beth never lost her
sense of humour. She was inspirational and saw the
disease as an opportunity to live each day as if it
was her last and I felt humbled.
“For me, posting my #nomakeupselfie was a
small act, with a small donation, but millions of
pounds were raised through this campaign. It’s
got everyone talking and surely that can’t be a bad
thing?”
cancer for years”
Jacqui Colgan,
23, Kilrea
Jacqui says: “I wanted
to do my bit and get
involved as this is a cause
close to my heart.
“I lost my beautiful
mother at the age of nine
when she was just 29
years old. She suffered
from breast cancer and
after being diagnosed
at the age of 28, the
terminal illness spread
throughout her body and
sadly she passed away.
“So many people doing
their bit really shows
that people are beautiful
on the inside and that’s
what matters. The
amount of money being
raised is unbelievable
and everyone should
be so proud – even if it
doesn’t find a cure it’s
definitely a step in the
right direction.
“Cancer not only
affects the person but
also their family and I just
hope people keep doing
what they are doing and
maybe someday there
will be a stop to all the
suffering.”
The no make-up ‘selfie’ craze swept
social media last month - and we got our
hands on some of your fresh faced snaps!
