1. Ball Memorial Hospital
Ball Memorial Hospital, a Clarian Health Partner,
was founded in 1929 as both a teaching hospital
and regional tertiary referral center.
A not-for-profit organization, BMH is home to
more than 400 physicians, representing more
than 45 medical specialties.
BMH offers an array of services, including a
Cancer Center, Cardiology and Open Heart
Program, and Total Joint and Spine Center.
In 2009 BMH was recognized as one of the 100
top hospitals for cardiovascular care in the nation
by Thomson Reuters; and was also designated
as a Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association Blue
Distinction® Center in the areas of Cardiac Care,
Knee and Hip Replacement and Spine Surgery.
The hospital campus is home to the Edmund F.
Ball Medical Education Center and includes the
largest physician-teaching program in Indiana
outside of Indianapolis, with four residency
programs and a total of 62 physicians in training.

2. Our coordinator service provides assistance in
some or all of the following areas:
• Study feasibility
• Contract and budget preparation and
negotiation with study sponsor
• Assistance with protocol and informed
consent development
• Completion of regulatory documents for
sponsor
• Institutional Review Board (IRB) application
for approval
• Facilitation and education of ancillary

Institutional Review Board
Ball Memorial Hospital has an on-site Institutional
Review Board (IRB) to review biomedical research
procedures which involve patients. The board
is composed of laypersons, physicians, nurses,
representatives from the clergy and other
community members. When reviewing research
protocols for approval, the IRB considers the risks
and benefits to the participants, scientific validity,
informed consent procedures and guidelines to
protect the privacy of subjects and confidentiality
of research data.

BMH Medical Research
Physicians and staff members at Ball Memorial
Hospital have been actively involved in national and
international medical research studies since the early
1980s. The Department of Research at Ball Memorial
was established in 1989 with the purpose of providing
a variety of state-of-the-art research treatments to the
residents of East Central Indiana. We are continually
seeking to attract the support of reputable sponsors
and professional organizations in bringing the latest
clinical trials to our patients and members of the
medical community. The Department of Research
at Ball Memorial Hospital participates in phase II, III,
and IV clinical trials with pharmaceutical, device and
biotech companies. The Department is also actively
involved in original investigator initiated studies as
well as various university collaborations.

About the Department of Research
The Department of Research staff includes
an administrative assistant and two full-time
research nurses. Our nurses are dedicated
exclusively to research projects being conducted
at Ball Memorial Hospital. In addition to being
BSN prepared, they are certified in clinical
research and hold IATA certification for shipping
of infectious substances.
The Department of Research at Ball Memorial
Hospital has enrolled a yearly average of 160
clinical trial participants for the past four years.
Our research program has recently earned the
distinction of being the second highest enroller
in a national stroke outcome registry.
We can assist with research activities among
inpatient or outpatient populations. Our
coordinator service can be tailored to the
investigator’s need from simple facilitation
of protocol requirements to full protocol
management.
