2. Known to convey a strong social
message through his documentaries
and short films, Snehasis Das is now
gearing up for his first feature film.
3. Needless to mention, it’s based on a
subject that matters! The national-award
winning documentary filmmaker will be
highlighting the catastrophic
transformations brought on by climate
change and global warming and its effect
on the lives of people residing in coastal
areas through his upcoming project,
'Kokoli’. Shot in Puri, the film has Gargi
Mohanty in the lead.
4.
5. Interacting with My City Links, Snehasis
said, "I have been making short
documentaries based on environmental
issues for quite a long time. This is the first
time I decided to make a feature film. I
hope the film will help in sensitising people
about the concept of climate change and
the danger it poses for all of us.”
6. National award winning film editor
Prashant Naik, will be editing ‘Kokoli’.
"Editing will begin soon. We are planning
to complete editing and colouring by mid-
October. We are expecting a release by the
end of November," he informed. The film
has one song sung by Trupti Das and DOP is
done by Srikant Pattnaik
7.
8. The film narrates the life story of fishing
communities of Nolia Sahi and their plight.
"Through the film, we are targeting the
fishing communities who are the worst
victims of global warming. Fishing is their
only livelihood.
9. Their struggle to adapt with such huge
threats to their life forms the story of the
film," Snehasis shared.
10. The plot of 'Kokoli’ follows the lives of
fishing community members of Nolia Sahi
who are happy and content, selling shell
products to tourists. But things turn topsy-
turvy when a government order forces
them to vacate their village because of rise
in sea level, which in fact, could lead to
submergence of different coastal villages of
Odisha.
11. “Even as Nolia Sahi is under serious threat
because of global warming and rise in sea
levels, the people there do not understand
what climate change is,” explained
Snehasis
12. The film also has a love story woven into
the plot. “The film is named after the
female protagonist, 'Kokoli’, a name given
to her by her mother after a popular sea
fish. We are trying to show how calamities
become a barrier in her life and
happiness," he added.
13.
14. When asked about the star cast, Snehasis
said, "For this film, we needed methodical
actors, not stars. We scouted a number of
places for good actors. Most of the actors
in the film are from theatre.
15. "Snehasis is planning to send the movie to
various film festivals across the world. "The
film is basically made for film festivals; the
theatrical release will come in later," he
said.
16. Climate change and global warming pose
an enormous threat to people living in
coastal regions of Odisha due to rise in sea
level. Global sea level has been rising over
the past century, and the situation has
worsened over the last decade.
17. Massive loss of land and livelihood for
communities living across the coastal belt
is another major concern.
18. "Coastal areas of Odisha are potentially
vulnerable to accelerated erosion due to
rise in sea level. At present, adaptation is
the only solution to deal with the
situation.Though the damage has been
done by urban dwellers, people residing in
rural and coastal areas are the victims," he
added.
