1. My professional story:
I alwaysdreamedaboutmakingadifference andIthoughtthatwas achievedbyworkinghardand
gettingtothe topof a company. The ultimate goal wasto manage/leadothersandempoweringthem
to be theirbestwithaccountabilityandhumility. SoI set myself ona missiontogetout of the small
fishingtowninNewfoundlandIgrewupinand have a career inthe corporate world. Aftercollege I
foundmyself inAlbertaworkinginthe Oil andGas sectorwitha major engineeringfirm. As mycareer
evolved,Imovedfromdesignerintosupportandthena leadrole. I evolvedfromthe secondfemale
pipingdesignerinagroup of almost100 male designers,toleadingadesignsupportteamonmultiple
projectsandtraining/mentoringteamsof upto100 designers.
As mydreamsof leadingandcoordinatingwere beingachieved,Istartedtodreambiggerand wantedto
move intomanagementwithinthe organizationsoIcouldhave a biggerreach to empowerandwork
withothers. As mystory goes,otheragendasandcompanypoliticsquicklycame intoplayandthat
dreamwas notrealized. In fact,thingsstartedmovinginthe complete oppositedirection. Ithas beena
ride of ups and downsthathas a repetitionof endingwithbulliesandarrogance supersedingtalentand
ability. Ihave watchedreallysmartandamazingcolleaguesbroughttoagrindinghaltand feeling
defeatedinthe workplace,asIhave beenmanytimesinthe last few years. Thistrendisalarmingly
scary and made me questionmydreamsor workinginthisindustry.
The changingeconomyof oil and gas inAlbertahasalsoleadto many changeswithinthe corporate
organizationsfrommanagementall the waydown. Withthe primaryfocusof corporationstocut costs
and findmore efficiencies,there isverylittle focusonempoweringemployeestorise withinanymore.
2. Time and time againwe are seeingnewmanagerscome inandbulldoze theirwaythroughandclean
house,implementingtheirideasandplanswithouttakingthe time tofindoutwhattheirteamhas
accomplishedoriscapable of. Employeesare scaredtobring new ideasorspeakupin fearsof being
replaced. This isthe opposite of leadingandempowering!
The newcorporate model seemstobe that managersare dictators,andemployeesare consumable.
Is thisthe future forour children?
As a single momof twoteenagers,Iwasalsofeelingdesperateandextremelyfearfulof losingmyjob
whennewmanagerscame inand starteddictatingandbull-dozing. So I openedmymindtoother
opportunities. I neededtofindaplanB and hopefullysomethingbetter! WhatI discoveredisthere is
better. There actuallyare industrieswherepeople worktogether,helpeachother,andempowereach
other!
I was intriguedandneededtolearnmore! SoI started my planB in NetworkMarketing.
I usedto thinkverynegativelyaboutNetworkmarketing… I thoughtitwas a pyramidscheme,itwas
people tryingtotake advantage of naïve people soa few at the topcouldsucceedand be happy.
What I discoveredveryquicklyisthe completeopposite! The people Ihave metinthe past few months
of exploringthisindustryhaschangedmylife! Theyare absolutelythe mostpositive,caring,helpful,
and empoweringpeople Ifeel privilegedtohave learnedfromandassociate with. Asmentionedina
previouspost,SirRichardBranson,wasone of the speakersata conference Iattendedlastfall. He isa
huge advocate of thisindustry - because itgivesback,it helps,itempowers! The people inthatindustry
worktogetherto helpeachotherfulfill theirdreams!
I was absolutelystuckintunnel visionforfartoo manyyears! I am sohappy I decidedtoopenmyeyes
and lookaroundat the rest of the world!
So one of my newdreamsisto helpthe corporationsrealize the powerof workingtogetherandgrowing
leadersfromwithinbyempoweringaccountable,courageous,humbleteamsandlet’sgetbackto
workingtogetherandstoptearingeachotherdown!
